SIR DOUG NICHOLLS A Yorta Yorta man born on Cummeragunja mission in New South Wales in 1906, Sir Doug Nicholls played football for Fitzroy before becoming a Pastor and pioneer for reconciliation in Australia. BILL DEMPSEY 2022 SIR DOUG NICHOLLS ROUND HONOUREE The 2022 Sir Doug Nicholls Round will pay tribute to the contribution of Bill Dempsey. 2022 SDNR UMPIRE UNIFORMS AFL Umpires will wear specially designed uniforms representing Aboriginal communities. The design is a collaboration of two separate pieces of artwork by two young Aboriginal women, Kyanna McIntosh and Kylinda Alice who both attend Worawa Aboriginal College. Kyanna’s contribution to the design is featured in the corners of the shirt, with a representation of her grandfather shown as the goanna, while the three spears represent her name (MUPA) in her Djambarrpuya language. Kylinda’s design that features in the middle of the shirt includes footprints, meeting circles and shield patterns that represents everyone coming together as one and being proud of who they are. The design also represents the Santa Teresa region where Kylinda is from and her Arrernte language. The specially designed shirt is the eighth time AFL Umpires have worn a uniform celebrating the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities have had on our game and the second occasion AFLW Umpires have worn a dedicated shirt as part of AFLW Indigenous Round. 2022 SIR DOUG NICHOLLS ROUND FACT SHEET 5
2022 SDNR SHERRIN Pirlangimpi Melville Island woman Jennifer Louise (Lulu) Coombes has designed the Sherrin football that will feature during Sir Doug Nicholls round in 2022 and 2023. » L ulu creates art in the traditional Tiwi style, developing her artistic skills and cultural knowledge by watching and listening to her elders » T he ball features a Spear representing strength, Armbands which represent culture, footprints which acknowledges past, present and future Indigenous men and women who have walked the AFL path as players or volunteers and a Kulama design which means a celebration of life past, present and future » Lulu paints, makes screen prints and Lino prints, as well as pottery. » L ulu has previously designed Hawthorn Football Club’s Indigenous Guernsey for the 2018/2019 Sir Doug Nicholls Round 2022 SIR DOUG NICHOLLS ROUND FACT SHEET 6
INDIGENOUS TALENT PROGRAMS The AFL has a range of Indigenous and Multicultural talent pathway programs to engage with male and female footballers from culturally diverse communities. In 2022, there are six talent programs aimed at engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players including Next Generation Academy Community program (11–13-year old players), Next Generation Academy Elite program (16-18 year old players), State Kickstart program (14-16 year old players), Flying Boomerangs (14-16 year old male players), Woomeras (14-16 year old female players), National Diversity Academies (16-18 year old players) and Fitzroy Cubs program (18-23 year old male players).
