Jonah Berger SF THE CATALYST March 2020 From the author of New York Times bestsellers Contagious and Invisible Influence, comes a revolutionary approach to changing anyone’s mind. Change is hard and it seems people resist it at all costs. We persuade and cajole and push and pull, but even after all that work, nothing budges. Things change at a glacial pace, if at all. Could there be a better way? This book takes a contrarian approach. Drawing on cutting-edge research from a range of disciplines, bestselling author Jonah Berger argues that successful change isn’t about pushing harder or exerting more energy. It’s about removing barriers. Overcoming resistance by reducing friction and lowering the hurdles to action. Catalysts remove roadblocks and reduce the barriers to change. Instead of asking, “How could I change someone’s mind?” ask a different question: “Why haven’t they changed already? What’s stopping them?” The Catalyst identifies the key barriers to change and how to mitigate them. 272 pages. Scott Eyman RB CARY GRANT October 2020 Scott Eyman, author of the New York Times bestseller John Wayne: The Life and Legend, has written an incisive, definitive biography of another great Hollywood legend, Cary Grant, drawing in part on new research into Grant's all-important early years, which permanently shaped his life. Cary Grant was born Archibald Leach, an Englishman who made his way to America as a teenager, part of a vaudeville act, and stayed here. It was in vaudeville that Grant learned his excellent timing, which served him brilliantly throughout his movie career. Despite his enormous success, Cary was haunted by his damaging childhood. On screen he played comedy (“His Girl Friday”), drama (“The Philadelphia Story”), action (“To Catch a Thief”) or suspense (“Notorious”). He played screwball comedy and leading man equally successfully and starred opposite such leading ladies as Katherine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Mae West, , Sophia Loren, among others. Decades after he made his last film and more than thirty years after his death, Cary Grant remains enormously popular. The American Film Institute (AFI) named him the second-greatest male star of Hollywood's Golden Era. The book includes a 24-page black-and-white photo insert. Rita Colwell, Ph.D. PP A LAB OF ONE’S OWN August 2020 A riveting memoir-manifesto from the first female director of the National Science Foundation about the entrenched sexism in science, the elaborate detours women have taken to bypass the problem, and how to fix the system. Dr. Rita Colwell is a pioneering microbiologist and the first woman to head the National Science Foundation. She is a Distinguished University Professor at both the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health. She was the first scientist to discover how malaria works and is the recipient of awards from the Emperor of Japan, the King of Sweden, and the President of the United States, Dr. Colwell reveals that even with her success, she and other women face entrenched sexism among her male colleagues and bosses. Colwell’s resistance gives her special gifts: forced to change specialties so many times, she comes to see science as interdisciplinary, which turns out to be key to making new discoveries in the silo-less 21st century. She also witnesses the advances that can be made when men and women work together as equals, such as when she led the team whose work was critical in identifying the source of the anthrax powder used in the 2001 letter attacks. A Lab of One’s Own is an indispensable history of scientific progress (and stagnation) and empowering for women in every field to show that they can fight against sexism in the sciences and change things for the better. Annik LaFarge EG CHASING CHOPIN August 2020 Writer, editor, and lecturer Annik LaFarge tells the story of how Frédéric Chopin wrote his most famous work, a piano sonata with an unorthodox funeral march, to explain why his innovative music still matters centuries later. Frédéric Chopin's Opus 35, also known as the Funeral March, is arguably the best-known melody in the world. Cue the opening – dum dum da dum ... — and anyone can finish the measure. But the Funeral March is not the piece of music we think we know. The piece is in two parts, the second of which is rarely played. The March comes to an end and you think: that’s it, a somber statement about death, an ending. But the music then continues in a joyous and hopeful second part. Chasing Chopin is a book about musical discovery. It draws on biography, political and cultural history, technology, and music theory, to present Chopin in a new light. LaFarge follows in Chopin’s footsteps, from his homeland in Poland, where he was exiled; to Paris, then the political and intellectual capital of the world; to Majorca, where he took an ill-fated sojourn with his infamous lover, the writer George Sand; and more, to understand Chopin’s time. She visits piano makers, and plays an instrument like the one Chopin favored. She talks to musicians, piano makers, and even video game developers, and others, to understand Chopin’s influence. The book is part adventure story, part music theory, part biography, and entirely captivating. Mary Pauline Lowry CG THE ROXY LETTERS April 2020 A quirky, funny, completely irresistible novel that will make you think of The Rosie Project and Bridget Jones Diary and put a smile on your face from page one to the end. Roxy is underemployed, sexually frustrated, and uninspired. Tired of her job as a deli maid at the original Whole Foods, Roxy daydreams of breaking out of her funk and finding a job that will get her creative juices flowing. She also wouldn’t mind finding love and finding herself off the brink of financial ruin—a place she’s found herself thanks to her ever-daunting mortgage and the late rent payments of her roommate-slash-ex-boyfriend, Everett. On top of it all, gentrification is slowly changing her beloved city in new and evilly corporate ways. When a new Lululemon pops up in town, Roxy finds that she can stay silent no longer. Encouraged by her friends, Roxy decides to take action. What starts as a protest against the gentrification of her beloved city sets Roxy down a path of purpose, arrest, good sex, love, and self-discovery. Fans of Bridget Jones Diary will love Roxy’s laugh-out-loud commentary on millennial dating, loneliness and money troubles. At the end of the novel, you won’t have solved life mysteries but you will certainly have had a great and fun read! “Naughty, effervescent fun. A novel abounding in dauschunds, tweakers, real fulfillment centers, aisles of strange beer, and shrines to Venus (they work!). Roxy rocks Austin. And rights the world.” —Joy Williams, author of The Visiting Privilege “Bawdy, frank and laugh-out-loud funny, The Roxy Letters brings to antic life all the hilarity and peppy horrors of being rootless and questing in your twenties.” —Julia Claiborne Johnson, author of Be Frank With Me “Tom Robbins meets Bridget Jones' Diary, eccentric, fun, delicious, for the thinking woman who loves her vagina." —Rufi Thorpe, author of Dear Fang, with Love "The enormously talented Mary Pauline Lowry has given us a wonderful and compelling contradiction, a novel at once wicked and extravagant and vulnerable and pure. For comedy, for sheer joyous energy and deadly charm, you cannot do better than The Roxy Letters." —Brady Udall, author of The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint "The breezy, charming, laugh-out-loud-funny voice of this book belies the strong bones of plot, character development, place and theme that lie beneath. Part love goddess, part urban warrior, part best-friend-you-wish-you-had, Roxy takes Austin by storm. You will fall in love with her. " —Francesca Lia Block, author of Weetzie Bat "Roxy and Mary Pauline Lowry are keeping Austin weird and wacky in The Roxy Letters. Rachel Beanland CG FLORENCE ADLER SWIMS FOREVER July 2020 A heartwarming, tender family saga with nuanced characters and a propulsive, twisty plot that raises fascinating questions about the lengths we go to in order to protect the people we love the most, all set against the wonderful backdrop of 1930s Atlantic City. The novel opens in June of 1934 in Atlantic City, with the drowning death of Florence Adler, who has recently returned home from college with the goal to swim the English Channel by summer’s end. In the wake of Florence’s death, her family and friends must negotiate her loss over the course of that summer. The tragedy occurs unbeknownst to Fannie, Florence’s older sister, who is pregnant and on bedrest at the hospital. Her mother, Esther, fears the news will be too much for Fannie to bear and decides that the family must keep Florence’s death a secret—at least until the baby is born. This decision will have dire consequences, and its resulting tensions become the backdrop against which long-buried family dramas resurface as the Adlers try to pick up the pieces of their former lives. Told from rotating points of view, the novel features a diverse cast of richly drawn and unforgettable characters. Staying with the Adler family is Anna Epstein, a young Hungarian woman, almost exactly Florence’s age, who Joseph recently helped emigrate from Nazi Germany. Her connection to the family becomes apparent as the story unfolds. For readers of Beatriz Williams and Anita Diamant and based on real events, the novel offers a look at the dysfunctional relationships inherent to every family. With the brisk pace of a beachside page- turner, the second half of the book unfolds with an indelible love story that is both captivating and surprising, and ultimately, uplifting. “Florence Adler Swims Forever is a riveting page-turner about characters who know how to keep a fierce secret, even when it is nearly impossible to do so.” —De’shawn Winslow, author of In West Mills “The best fiction elucidates a time, place, and people. This is it. Right here. With precise, beautiful prose and spot-on dialogue, Rachel Beanland’s debut novel, Florence Adler Swims Forever, is a flawless work of fiction that captures a flawed but big-hearted Jewish family navigating Atlantic City during the Great Depression. This beachside New Jersey town is as vivid a character as the family inhabiting it and even the most damaged characters contain glimmers of hope.” Michele Young-Stone, Author Of Above Us Only Sky “Rachel Beanland has written a wonderfully assured and completely engrossing first novel. From the very first page, I was completely invested in the lives of Florence, Gussie, Anna and the rest. Florence Adler Swims Forever has much to say about family, loss and all the ways we have to wonder what might have been, and it does so with great skill and a deeply humane vision. I could not recommend it more highly.” — Kevin Powers, author of National Book Award finalist The Yellow Birds "Rachel Beanland is a writer of uncommon wit and wisdom, with a sharp and empathetic eye for character. She'll win you over in the most old fashioned of ways: She simply tells a hell of a story." —Rebecca Makkai, Pulitzer Finalist For The Great Believers --24--
"I started reading Florence Adler Swims Forever and did not stop until its final words. Rachel Beanland so completely transports readers to the summer of 1934 in Atlantic City and a tragedy that changes the lives of one family there that I expected to smell salt air and see ocean waves crashing when I looked up again. What a bighearted novel this is. What a glorious debut." —Ann Hood, Author Of The Book That Matters Most "Florence Adler Swims Forever is a tender, funny, frank look at how family and faith can frustrate us, sustain us, and keep us human.” —Blair Hurley, author of The Devoted Territory: World 1st Serial/British/Translation/Electronic Version/Audio: Simon & Schuster Electronic Adaptation/Film: Janklow & Nesbit/Chad Luibl (212) 421-1700 Cluibl@janklow.com 285 Madison Avenue, New York 10017 French: Lattes Lithuanian: Baltos Lankos --25--
Masy Card DD THESE GHOSTS ARE FAMILY March 2020 A stunning literary debut novel, These Ghosts are Family reveals the ways in which a Carribean family forms and splinters through the generations. The novel centers around Abel and Vera Paisley, a working-class Jamaican couple in the 1960s. An electric and character-driven saga, the reader is propelled forward by the need to piece together the interworking’s of an incredibly dynamic family. “I suspect many readers will talk about the consequences of unspoken generational trauma in These Ghosts Are Family, but I'm most amazed by the deft use of characterization, place and embodiment here. Ron Friedman SF REVERSE ENGINEER January 2021 Ron Friedman draws on the latest scientific research to show how reverse engineering unleashes creativity and leads to success. Where does mastery come from? For years, we’ve debated the role of talent versus skill, nature versus nurture, and the precise number of hours necessary for achieving expertise. Absent from this discussion is an approach that top performers, from creative geniuses to business giants, have secretly leveraged for generations: reverse engineering. To reverse engineer is to analyze an object, performance, or product in a way that reveals an underlying structure. It is the ability to taste a soufflé and deduce its recipe, to listen to a song and determine its chord progression, to watch a horror film and discern its story structure. It involves looking beyond what is evident on the surface and seeing a hidden architecture—one that reveals both how an object was designed, and more importantly, how it can be recreated. Reverse Engineer offers readers a novel approach to innovating and creating, while debunking the conventional wisdom on expertise. Ron Friedman, Ph.D., is an award-winning social psychologist who specializes in human motivation. Dr. Friedman has served on the faculty of the University of Rochester, Nazareth College, and Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and has consulted for some of the world’s most successful organizations. Popular accounts of his research have appeared on NPR and in major newspapers, including The New York Times, Financial Times, the Globe and Mail, Washington Post, The Guardian, as well as other publications. Heather Berlin, PhD, MPH SF THE FINE ART OF LOSING CONTROL April 2022 A tour of the science of impulse control that shows readers what happens when the “impulse” and “control” areas of the brain go out of balance, leading to many of the self-destructive behaviors. Not all impulses are destructive of course. The impulse to stand up and scream along with everyone else in the stadium when your team scores a winning goal, and the impulse to stand up and scream at your boss during a staff meeting are divided only by a few brain circuits that assess context and social consequences. The book uses modern neuroscience and psychology to show how the brain processes impulses. Dr. Berlin shows how the brain works, why impulses sometimes lead us astray, and what you can do to take control of your own thoughts and behavior, and make your brain work for you. Heather Berlin is a neuroscientist and professor of psychiatry at Mount Sinai and hosts Startalk with Neil DeGrasse Tyson and the PBS series Science Goes to the Movies.
