Matthew Crow (BD) NIGHTINGALE Reminiscent in tone to Tana French and TV’s Broadchurch, Nightingale has a strong sense of community running through it and introduces a new DCI, Jane Erskine, to the crime fiction scene. The relationship she builds up with the deceptively naive DC Mark Briggs is engagingly drawn and adds a lightness of touch to an otherwise absorbing thriller. Sasha Constantin is found murdered in the grounds of Caversham Gardens - an allotment at the heart of the beautiful square where he’d lived his whole life. The night before, the residents’ association held their annual Summer Solstice party. Everybody he knew was in attendance, yet most appear reluctant to disclose their alibis, for in a place like Caversham Square, nobody is innocent. Meanwhile, DCI Jane Erskine has recently returned to her native Newcastle Upon Tyne to oversee the dying days of her mother. Once made SIO of the Constantin case, she must unravel the secrets of the mourning community - along with her new partner, DI Mark Briggs - in order to unearth the killer’s identity. Nightingale is the first in a new series following the three principal characters – DCI Jane Erskine, DI Mark Briggs, and PC Iris Dalton - set amidst the savage beauty of the North East of England. ABOUT MATTHEW CROW Matthew was born and raised in Newcastle and began freelancing for newspapers and magazines whilst still at school, writing about the arts and pop culture. He has written five novels: Ashes and My Dearest Jonah - the second of which was nominated for the Dylan Thomas Prize for Literature - and one book for young adults, In Bloom, which was nominated for the Carnegie Medal and the North East Teen Book Award, and listed in the Telegraph's Best YA of 2014 List. His fourth book, Another Place, is also for young adults and was published by Atom in August 2017. Matthew's most recent novel, Baxter's Requiem, was published in September 2018 by Corsair. Sarah Jackson (HI) NOT ALONE A debut novel of post-apocalyptic survivial, fierce motherly-love and hope, for fans of STATION ELEVEN and ROOM. Not Alone follows Katie and her son Harry, who have survived alone in their haven of a flat for the last five years. Katie forages for what is safe to eat and Harry remains in the flat, safe from the dangers of outside; toxic rain, wild animals and survivors. However, Katie thinks she might be dying. The cough that has come every winter since the storm, now comes more regularly and her heart hurts. She knows that Harry needs someone other than her to protect him. When the peace that they have lived in is shattered by the arrival of another and Katie discovers that the man she loved might still be out there, five years after she assumed him dead, she takes Harry outside, into the changed and toxic, yet beautiful world for the first time and on a desperate journey across the country to try to find him. ABOUT SARAH JACKSON Sarah is an ecologist specialising in botany, and has a keen interest in human-wildlife coexistence, conservation, climate change and microplastics pollution. Her job has taken her all around the UK, scrambling through woodland, paddling up rivers, squelching through mountain bogs, and also sometimes overseas. It provides plenty of inspiration for her writing. She studied Psychology and Criminology at Cardiff University, before deciding to do a Masters in Conservation Ecology at Oxford Brookes University. An avid reader of books, especially fantasy, science fiction and non-fiction, she also loves to adventure to wild places, especially those with mountains, ancient forest and glacial waterfalls. Thomas D. Lee (HI) THE MATTER OF BRITAIN For fans of American Gods or Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, but written in a present-tense style that strives to emulate the work of Hilary Mantel. The book opens with Kay, an Arthurian knight, returning from the dead. This is something he does fairly often: he fought at Hastings, and at Agincourt, and in both world wars. After a thousand years, he’s getting pretty tired of it. Now he’s woken up in an exaggerated post-Brexit dystopia, when the oceans have risen, the army has been privatised, and the realm seems more divided than ever. In this new Britain he meets a young eco-warrior, Maryam, who is tired of feeling like she can’t change anything. They agree to work together to try and make things better. But not everybody wants them to succeed. This new Britain is wild and unforgiving, full of gangs and mercenaries and talking squirrels. And Kay is not the only ancient thing to come crawling up out of the ground. If the realm can’t be saved from peril, it might be time to bring back King Arthur himself. ABOUT THOMAS D. LEE Thomas D. Lee writes novels about folklore and climate breakdown, often at the same time. He believes all sorts of things about how art and literature can be used as tools to fight for a better future, but mostly he just wants to make his readers laugh. He holds a BA in History and an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Manchester, where he is currently studying for a PhD. If they invent a new thing that comes after a PhD then he’ll probably do that as well. When he’s not writing books his hobbies include reading, letting his cup of tea go cold, and playing Dungeons and Dragons. He lives in central Manchester with his pet yucca tree, Carlos. Kathleen Whyman (EG) SECOND WIFE SYNDROME Wedding dress designer Marie is happily married to Scott, and they have a three-year-old daughter, Anna. Along with her eccentric French mother, Scott’s nightmare ex-wife Liz and busy, flourishing business, the last thing Marie needs is to feel she is being watched 24/7 by an unknown figure. She’s sure Scott is the perfect husband, but when she meets new bride-to-be Beth, and her dreamy doctor brother Michael, the life she thought she had been so cleverly juggling begins to unravel in spectacular fashion. Perfect for fans of Mhairi McFarlane and Maian Keyes. ABOUT KATHLEEN WHYMAN Kathleen Whyman is an author, freelance journalist and columnist for Writer's Forum magazine. Kathleen wrote her first novel, The Ghost of Cripple Creek, when she was ten. Despite the accompanying illustrations, it was never published. Jackie magazine also rejected the short stories she submitted in her teens. Possibly because they were crap. Undeterred by this, Kathleen always aspired to be a novelist, but got slightly side-tracked over the years by her career in journalism, children and Mad Men box sets. It was her eight-year-old daughter's words, "Stop talking about writing a book and just write one", that gave her the push she needed. Kathleen lives in Hertfordshire with her husband and two daughters, one of whom is expecting 10% of any profits. Second Wife Syndrome was shortlisted for the Comedy Women in Print Prize 2020, in the Unpublished Comic Novel category. ALL RIGHTS AVAILABLE

M. W. Craven (DHH) DEAD GROUND (WASHINGTON POE 4) (Constable & Robinson, June 2021) Detective Sergeant Washington Poe is in court, fighting eviction from his beloved and isolated croft, when he is summoned to a backstreet brothel in Carlisle where a man has been beaten to death with a baseball bat. As Poe and the socially awkward programmer Tilly Bradshaw delve deeper into the case, they are faced with seemingly unanswerably questions: despite being heavily vetted for a high- profile job, why does nothing in the victim’s background check out? Why was a small ornament left at the murder scene – and why did someone on the investigation team steal it? And what is the connection to a flawlessly executed bank heist three years earlier, a heist where nothing was taken… ABOUT M. W. CRAVEN Multi-award-winning author M. W.
