PRESS RELEASE EMBARGOED TILL SATURDAY, 16 MARCH 2019, 11.30AM SILVER PARADE 2019 Reimagine Ageing - Central Singapore CDC launches inaugural “Silver Parade” An initiative for Singaporeans of all ages to Reimagine Ageing and Age Gracefully together as a nation SINGAPORE, 16 March 2019 – Central Singapore Community Development Council (CDC)’s first Silver Parade on 16 March 2019 co-organised with ITE College Central, is for Singaporeans of all ages to embrace their silver years. Singapore is ageing at a rapid pace. As Singaporeans live longer, social and healthcare needs are changing, with more attention placed to ensure that Singaporeans age well. But at the same time, every individual, regardless of age, can still be inspired to reimagine ageing. The Silver Parade aims to promote the 3 Cs of reimagining ageing – one, to build curiosity for lifelong-learning; two, to connect and build meaningful relationships; and three, to contribute to a meaningful purpose one believes in. The Silver Parade aims to bring Singaporeans together to support, encourage and inspire everyone to lead fulfilling lives as they age. Community and family support make a positive difference to seniors of all profiles – whether they are actively ageing, at-risk, frail or disabled. Said Mayor of Central Singapore District, Ms Denise Phua, “The Central Singapore District has the most number of seniors in Singapore. Ageing impacts everyone, regardless of age. Let us not define ageing by our conventional expectations. Let us rediscover possibilities of what we can do. Seniors like Grandma Mary Ho, Team Strong Silvers, heart-bypass patient Mdm Ng Siew Choo and many others have all done so! Through the Silver Parade, Central Singapore CDC and our partners hope to inspire everyone to reimagine ageing and support each other in ageing well together.” Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Health, Dr Lam Pin Min will be joining some 2,500 participants at the event.

ANNEX C MEDIA PROFILES Hamzah Bin Osman, 51 The youngest in a family of seven, Hamzah’s circumstances in his youth did not allow him to chase his dream to better the environment. Although he became an architecture by trade, his hunger to learn more about the environment persisted. At the age of 40, he reignited his passion and became an active upcycler. His upcycling skills were self-taught and honed by learning from various online sources. This February, he received an Advanced Diploma in Landscape Management (Arboriculture), and is pursuing the necessary qualifications for his second career as a security guard. Hamzah is an example of how it is never too late for seniors to begin pursuing their passion. Learning is for life and they are able to maximise their learning potential even during the later years. “When I started upcycling, I know my knowledge is limited, so I had to turn to the Internet and other sources to learn. Now at 51, I’m still learning and taking courses. With my Diploma in Arboriculture, I want to teach the younger generation about plants and spark this interest in them. ”
Ng Siew Choo 黄秀珠 , 72 In 2006, Siew Choo was diagnosed with 2 partially blocked arteries in her heart. She took medicines to suppress her condition, but it worsened in 2016 and was advised to undergo a heart bypass surgery. Fearing the complications and risks, Siew Choo hesitated to go for the procedure then. She spoke to her family and also confided in a group of friends from the Kelantan RC. They encouraged her and offered words of advice to her to go for the surgery. In spite of her condition, she continued to sing and perform for the community with her friends. Siew Choo decided to undergo the bypass months later. She is now actively gardening and is part of the Silver Stars programme, serving the community even more with her voice. “If I didn’t’ have this group of friends, I think I would feel more discomfort (during the period before deciding to go for surgery). Not just physically, but also emotionally. I tell them everything, the good and the bad. I treasure these friendships made over the past years, they are like my second family.”
A.K. Latchumanan, 68 A humble man who gives his time unconditionally back to the community, Latchumanan, volunteers actively with the Inter-Racial and Religious Confidence Circle(IRCC), the Sri Mariamman temple and other Grassroots activities. He had a difficult life growing up, and describes his family as poor with his father having to feed an entire family of nine. As the eldest in the family, he gave the opportunity to study to his younger siblings and started working at the age of 16. Grateful towards the community for helping him and his family do better, he started volunteering as his way of giving back. He understands that most people volunteer in their youth, but not so in their later years. “When I volunteer, I don’t expect anything in return. Seniors should volunteer because it keeps them moving and occupies their mind. You will get a certain satisfaction that money cannot buy. A simple ‘thank you’ gives me a sense of accomplishment, and encourages me to continue serving.”
Lily wearing her handmade outfit for the Runway this Silver Parade Lily Chan 陈丽婵, 56 Lily is one of the lead sewing trainers for the Singapore Fashion Runway, and will be strutting the Runway this Silver Parade. In 2010, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and soon fell into depression. Her cheerful disposition and the support of her family led her to recovery. She went through surgery, chemotherapy and sought out physical activities to find back her confidence in life. Having fought cancer in her senior years, she wishes to use fashion and the Runway to encourage seniors to step out of their houses to experience the fullness of life. Using prior knowledge when she ran her boutique business, she taught fellow models to design and create their costumes. “I want to represent them (seniors) and I’m proud to be part of this. I hope that their passions and interest will drive them. Don’t let your age stop you!”
