PAUL’S MAIN MESSAGE: WE ARE ONE IN CHRIST!
CELEBRATING THE FEAST OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL
Paul reminds Christians that they have a common vocation,
because they have a new identity, rooted in God, which distinguishes
them from the world around them. This corporate identity is crucial in
Paul. The new identity is based on his experience and reflection: his
encounter with the risen Christ, Christ-centered spirituality, and
theological articulation. The faith relationship is intensely personal for
Paul as evidenced by his profession: “I have been crucified with Christ;
yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me” (Gal 2:19-20). This personal
relationship is also corporate, which is equally fundamental to Paul’s
theology.
It is no wonder that the word ‘church’ (ekklesia in Greek) is found
62 times in the Pauline corpus, while it is found only twice in the
Gospels (Mt 16:18; 18:17). It is the single most frequent term used by
Paul to refer to the groups. It took some time before early Christians
became aware of their union in Christ as ekklesia.
In Paul’s great letters the double sense of ekklesia is found, namely, designating both the local churches
and the primitive communities of Judea as “church of God” (1 Cor 11:16). As it was applied to the church of
Corinth, there is a broadening of Paul’s understanding of the ekklesia. It is beginning to denote the Christian
community as transcending provincial barriers. This seed of Paul’s teaching about the universality of the
church. Ekklesia plays an important role as a crucial part of the mystery of Christ. The barrier between Jew
and Greek has been broken down, and all human beings have been reconciled to God in Christ’s “body, of
the church” (Col 1:17).
For Paul himself the “church” represents a development in his thinking about Christ’s role in salvation.
It is the concrete manifestation among human beings who have been baptized “in one Spirit to form one
body” (1 Cor 12:13). The unity of those believers in one body, i.e., the church that transcends all local
barriers, is Paul’s greatest contribution to Christian theology. It is a unity that is derived from the single
purpose of the divine plan for the salvation of human beings in Christ Jesus. Paul came eventually to look on
the “church of God” as a unit transcending both Jews and Greeks, yet incorporating them both when they
became believers (1 Cor 10:32).
Believers do not together constitute one body because they are members of one another, but because
they are members of Christ and they are one body in Him (Rom 12:5; 1 Cor 6:15). This is not a sociological
assertion but a theological statement. Beyond the mutual interdependence of the diverse members, this unity
is realized by their common allegiance to Christ, generated and expressed through the sacraments of baptism
and the Eucharist. Mutual interdependence in Christ is expressed in mutual responsibility for one another
which manifests the grace of Christ.
For Paul the Christ-event means that humanity is changed in Christ. But this change involves the human
response. Through faith and love, through baptism and the Eucharist, we are incorporated into the body of
Christ. In Christ we transcend all barriers and become one. This is a vision desperately needed in this divided
world full of rivalries and conflicts, conflicting ideologies and values.

PRINCIPAL MENSAJE DE PABLO: ¡SOMOS UNO EN CRISTO!
CELEBRANDO LA FIESTA DE SAN PEDRO Y SAN PABLO.
San Pablo recuerda a los cristianos que tienen una vocación
común, porque tienen una nueva identidad, arraigada en Dios, que
los distingue del mundo que los rodea. Esta identidad colectiva es
crucial en Pablo. La nueva identidad se basa en su experiencia y
reflexión: su encuentro con Cristo resucitado, la espiritualidad cristo
céntrica y la articulación teológica. La relación de fe es intensamente
personal para Pablo, como lo demuestra su profesión: “Fui
crucificado con Cristo; pero ya no soy yo el que vive, sino es Cristo
quien vive en mí” (Gal 2, 19-20). Esta relación personal también es
colectiva, porque es igualmente fundamental para la teología de
Pablo.
No es de extrañar que la palabra "iglesia" (ekklesia en griego) se
encuentre 62 veces en el corpus paulino, mientras que solo se
encuentra dos veces en los Evangelios (Mt 16:18; 18:17). Este es el
término más frecuente usado por Pablo para referirse a los grupos.
Pasó algún tiempo antes de que los primeros cristianos se dieran
cuenta de su unión en Cristo como ekklesia.
En las grandes cartas de Pablo se encuentra el doble sentido de ekklesia, es decir, designando tanto
a las iglesias locales como a las comunidades primitivas de Judea como “iglesia de Dios” (1 Corintios
11:16). Como se aplicó a la iglesia de Corinto, hay una ampliación de la comprensión de Pablo de la
ekklesia. Comienza a indicar que la comunidad cristiana trasciende las barreras regionales. Esta semilla
de la enseñanza de Pablo sobre la universalidad de la iglesia. La Iglesia juega un papel importante como
parte crucial del misterio de Cristo. La barrera entre judíos y griegos se ha derribado y todos los seres
humanos han sido reconciliados con Dios en el "cuerpo, la iglesia" de Cristo (Colosenses 1:17).
Para el mismo Pablo, la "iglesia" representa un desarrollo en su pensamiento sobre el papel de
Cristo en la salvación. Es la manifestación concreta entre los seres humanos que han sido bautizados “en
un solo Espíritu para formar un solo cuerpo” (1 Co 12, 13). La unidad de esos creyentes en un cuerpo, es
decir, la iglesia que trasciende todas las barreras locales, es la mayor contribución de Pablo a la teología
cristiana. Es una unidad que se deriva del propósito único del plan divino para la salvación de los seres
humanos en Cristo Jesús. Pablo eventualmente llegó a considerar la “iglesia de Dios” como una unidad
que trascendía tanto a judíos como a griegos, pero incorporándolos a ambos cuando se hicieron
creyentes (1 Corintios 10:32).
Los creyentes no constituyen un solo cuerpo porque sean miembros unos de otros, sino porque
son miembros de Cristo y son un cuerpo en él (Rom 12: 5; 1 Cor 6:15). Ésta no es una afirmación
sociológica, sino una afirmación teológica. Más allá de la mutua dependencia de los diversos miembros,
esta unidad se realiza por su lealtad común a Cristo, generada y expresada a través de los sacramentos
del bautismo y la Eucaristía. La dependencia mutua en Cristo se expresa en la responsabilidad reciproca
de los unos por los otros, lo que manifiesta la gracia de Cristo.
Para San Pablo, el evento de Cristo significa que la humanidad ha cambiado en Cristo. Pero este
cambio involucra la respuesta humana. Por la fe y el amor, por el bautismo y la Eucaristía, somos
incorporados al cuerpo de Cristo. En Cristo trascendemos todas las barreras y nos convertimos en uno.
Esta es una visión que se necesita desesperadamente en este mundo dividido, lleno de rivalidades y
problemas, de ideologías y valores en conflicto.
