September Character Trait: Responsibility During the month of September, teachers will be focusing on the character trait of Responsibility. Each class will be reading the books Simon’s Hook by Karen Burnett and Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud to emphasize this character trait. Classes will be discussing what it means to be responsible. Classes will talk about what being responsible looks like and sounds like. What is Responsibility? - Responsibility is being dependable and accountable for your words and actions. - Responsibility is also doing your best and never blaming others for your mistakes. - Being responsible for a job means that you are the one who makes sure it is done. How Can You Encourage Your Child To Be Responsible At Home? Acknowledge when your child is acting responsibly (cleaning up, taking care of pets, etc.). Set a good example for them. Read books that show the main character being responsible. Expect each child to contribute to the household (getting dressed alone, placing their dishes in the sink, etc.) and praise them for their efforts. Discussion Questions About Responsibility: Talk to your child about why doing household chores is important. Ask each child how they can be responsible at home. Let them make choices about what they would like to do. New Layers of Safety in the District Sunnyvale School DIstrict is in the process of augmenting our layers of safety for the benefit of our students and staff. The purpose of all these efforts is clear: To keep students and staff safe and to keep classrooms and schools open for in-person instruction.
1. We will begin to offer after-school weekly COVID testing for all students after Labor Day. At this point, this testing is optional. Parents will be receiving a PermissionClick student testing waiver that will need to be completed in order for their student to be tested on site. At this time this is only for students who do not have symptoms. 2. We will be installing HEPA Air Cleaners in all classrooms. It will take a few weeks for these devices to arrive and to be deployed. These units provide an additional layer of safety in our classrooms above the levels recommended by CDPH and CDC. In addition to providing another level of safety against COVID and other airborne viruses, they also will help clean classroom air on smoky days. 3. We will change our outdoor masking expectation for students from "highly recommended" to "required" to align with guidance from the County and their quarantine protocols. This change will go into effect September 8th. New County quarantine protocols allow students to stay in school while participating in modified quarantine when they are a “close contact” to a COVID positive individual only if they were masked. COVID Protocols Symptomatic individuals (vaccinated and unvaccinated) All symptomatic individuals must isolate May return with a negative test if 24 hours fever free Without a negative test, must isolate for 10 days Positive COVID Cases (vaccinated and unvaccinated) All positive cases must isolate for 10 days Do not "retest" after isolation COVID Protocols: Close Contacts Close Contact: within 6 feet for 15 or more minutes, within 24 hours and indoors. Vaccinated, Asymptomatic Adults and Students: no quarantine test on/after 6th day
monitor symptoms for 14 days Unvaccinated, Asymptomatic Adults: quarantine for 10 days since last exposure test on/after 6th day Unvaccinated, Asymptomatic Students: (Exposure at school, case/contact masked): Modified Quarantine #1: Can attend class No extracurricular/sports Tested within 24 hours Tested on the 5th day If negative/asymptomatic may return to extracurricular on day 8 Unvaccinated, Asymptomatic Students: (Exposure at school, case/contact unmasked): Modified Quarantine #2: quarantine immediately test on/after 5th day if negative test (and no symptoms), can return on the 8th day * Classes will eat together as a cohort in the classroom on rainy days or REALLY smoky days.
