CORNER TO CORNER ACTIVITY GIVE AND GO Ready... FLYING DISC • 1 flying disc per 4 students • Spot markers (for grids) Set... • Create grids (8X8 paces) for every 4 students. • Form groups of 4; 1 disc per group. • 1 student in each of the 4 corners of grid; students take 1 step toward center of grid. GO! 1. The object is to “give and go.” This means pass quickly, move to follow your pass, and receive the disc from a pass. 2. Pass the disc from your corner clockwise (to your L) to CHALLENGES next player. How many passes can your group complete in 1 3. Go immediately after you pass. ACTIVITY PICKLE Ready... • 2 bases/spot markers per group of 3 SOFTBALL • 1 ball (tennis, ragball, or softball) per group of 3 Set... • Form groups of 3; 1 Baserunner and 2 Fielders. • Create a base path (2 bases, 15 paces apart) per group of 3. Place all base paths parallel to each other. Spread them 8-10 paces from each other. • Fielders (1 holding ball) begin on bases, and Baserunner begins mid-way between bases. GO! 1. The object for the Baserunner is to reach either base without being tagged with the ball by a Fielder. The CHALLENGES Fielders try to tag the Baserunner. How few throws can you 2. ACTIVITY TRIANGLE FIELDING Ready... • 1 ball (tennis, ragball, or softball) per 3 SOFTBALL students • 1 spot marker/base per student (for bases) Set... • Groups of 3; each group with a ball and 3 spot markers/bases. • Each group creates a triangle using the spot markers/bases, with 10-15 paces per side. • Be sure triangles are well spread throughout the area. ACTIVITY BATTING PRACTICE Prep Left Fielder 20 PACES Center Fielder Right Fielder • 4 cones (to create grids) • 1 home plate (or spot marker) per 5 students • 2-3 Wiffle® balls per 5 students • 1 bat per 5 students 60 PACES • 1 batting tee or tall cone per 5 students • 1 softball glove per student (optional) Batter Set Catcher • Create large (20X60 paces) rectangular grid per group of 5. = Rotation • In each grid, place home plate so Catcher’s back faces a fence/wall if possible. All grids should be facing the same direction. • Place 2-3 balls, 1 bat and 1 batting tee in each grid. • Form groups of 5: Batter, Catcher and 3 Fielders. Teach 1. In Batting Practice you will learn and practice proper batting technique hitting off a tee. 2. (Teach and demonstrate proper batting technique.) • Place ball on tee. Stand to the side of home plate. Get into batting position, facing home plate with feet slightly wider than shoulder width, front foot even with ball. A line from back to front foot points to your target. Weight on back foot, knees bent. • Hold bat with non-dominant hand on bottom, dominant hand directly above. • Hold bat keeping your hands just above back shoulder. MIDDLE SCHOOL • Swing level. Rotate hips forward, transferring weight from back to front foot. • Swing bat forward while extending your arms. Watch as the bat contacts the ball. • Follow-through with the bat on top of front shoulder, weight shifted to front foot. 3. Catcher at least 5 giant steps behind Batter. 4. Fielders field the balls, then quickly relay them back to the Catcher. 5. Every 5 hits, rotate: L field to C field to R field to Batter to Catcher to L field. 6. Cues SOFTBALL • Set, swing, and follow-through. • Swing level (i.e., parallel to the ground) to keep ball from popping up. • Shift weight from the back foot (set) to the front foot (follow-through). 7. Challenge • Can you control where you hit the ball (L, R, Center field)? 8. Think About… • When you hit the ball straight up the middle, where do you make contact with the ball? (Square over the center of home plate) 13 • When you hit to R field? L field? (To the front of or to the back of home plate)
ACTIVITY 7V7 MODIFIED SOFTBALL Prep LF 60 PACES RF • 4 bases or spot markers per 14 students • 1 ball (ragball) per 14 students 60 PACES S 2nd • 1 bat per 14 students • 1 batting tee or tall cone per 14 students 3rd P 1st • 1 softball glove per 2 students (optional) S CE B1 PA Set 15 5 PACES • Create large (60X60 paces) field per group of 14. • In each field, place home plate on endline so Batters B7 B6 B5 B4 B3 C Catcher from Batting team hit away from a fence/wall if possible. Create diamond using other bases set 15 paces apart. All fields should face the same direction. • Create groups of 7. Place 2 groups per field, each field with 1 ball, 1 bat, and 1 tee. • Teams consist of Pitcher, 1st Baseperson, 2nd Baseperson, Short Stop, 3rd Baseperson, R Fielder and L Fielder. Batting team supplies Catcher, who must be at least 5 paces behind home plate. Teach 1. In 7V7 Modified Softball you will test the skills developed during the softball unit. 2. Batting team sets batting order, which remains the same for the entire game. 3. There are 3 outs per ½ inning. Play until signal. 4. Rules are similar to regulation softball with the following exceptions: MIDDLE SCHOOL • Pitcher throws a maximum of 2 pitches per Batter. If a fair ball is not hit after 2 pitches the Batter uses the tee. • Only 1 foul ball allowed before Batter is out. • There is no base-stealing and no lead-offs. • Catchers cannot make defensive plays. Pitchers should cover home plate when needed. • You will receive sportsmanship points for displays of responsible play and behavior. 5. Challenges SOFTBALL • Offense, can players on your team get more than 1 at-bat in an inning? • Defense, how few batters can you face per inning? 6. Think About… • Why do you think it is important to communicate as a team during game play? 25
