OPEN CURRICULUM Provided in the following document are examples of weekly sessions for a NZF Skills Centre Open programme. All sessions are designed with the aim of creating players for the future game, in line with NZF’s playing philosophy. “NZF Skills Centres Open are available to all junior players who wish to play more football and further develop their ability. Based at a registered Whole of Football Club, NZF Skills Centre Open offer additional sessions within a familiar club environment.” All practices can be altered to change the Core Skill focus (Attacking or Defending) and can be progressed or regressed easily to meet player ability. SESSION 1 PLAYING MOMENT ATTACKING | CORE SKILL STRIKING THE BALL | FOCUS SHORT PASSING OPEN CURRICULUM SKILL INTRODUCTION SETUP • Create 2 areas up to 25x15m with a goal, and goalkeepers at the end of each area • Starting cones placed at each end of the area, opposite the goals • Add 2 shooting zones 10m away from the goals • Divide players into pairs, beginning at the starting cones • Each pair has a ball HOW TO PLAY • Players pass the ball between each other until they reach the shooting zone • Player who receives the ball in the shooting zone takes a shot as quickly as possible • The next pair begin passing as soon as the previous shot has been taken • Players retrieve their ball and move to the starting cone of the other area • If a shot rebounds they can take a 1st time shot to finish POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Players use 1st time passes, including the shot 2. SESSION 1 PLAYING MOMENT ATTACKING | CORE SKILL STRIKING THE BALL | FOCUS SHORT PASSING OPEN CURRICULUM SKILL TRAINING SETUP • Area of up to 20x12m • 3v3 + 2 neutral players • Team in possession has 1 player on each end of the area and 1 in the middle of the area • Neutral players occupy the side lines and can move along the side to support HOW TO PLAY • Team in possession aim to keep the ball and they receive a point if they play from one end to the other • Once the defending team win the ball, they attempt to pass to one of the neutral players • Defending team then become team in possession and change to take up the positions of attack (roles reverse) • Neutral players can not be tackled but can have their pass intercepted • The attacking players at each end can pass straight to one another POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Neutral players can also be tackled 2. If attacking players at the end pass to each other, ball must remain below head height EXERCISE TASK • Can we move the ball from one end to the other as quickly and safely as possible? PLAYER TASK EXAMPLES • Can attackers position themselves to the right, left and middle of the ball player? • Can the attackers position themselves to receive the ball to play forward quickly? SESSION 1 PLAYING MOMENT ATTACKING | CORE SKILL STRIKING THE BALL | FOCUS SHORT PASSING OPEN CURRICULUM SKILL GAME SETUP • Area of up to 30x20m • 2 small goals near each corner at both ends • Cones placed on the side marking the thirds • Create 3 teams of 4 players and bib accordingly • 2 teams begin on the pitch, with another team positioned on the outside as shown in the diagram (Wall players) HOW TO PLAY • Team in possession can use the wall players (8v4) • Wall players can’t be tackled but are on 3 touches and 3 seconds (on the ball) • Goals have to be scored in the attacking 1/3 (past the cone) • Rotate teams after 3 mins or after each goal (scoring team stays on) POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. All players are on 3 touch maximum 2. Wall players are on 2 touch maximum 3. SESSION 2 PLAYING MOMENT ATTACKING | CORE SKILL STRIKING THE BALL | FOCUS SHOOTING OPEN CURRICULUM SKILL INTRODUCTION SETUP • Area of up to 30 x 20m, split into 2 areas (15x20m). Modify area depending on the number of players • Assign 2 goal keepers and split players into two teams of equal numbers. Each cone has a server with two balls who has been allocated an individual number • Striker stands in the middle of his teams area without a ball HOW TO PLAY • Coach calls out a number. That number server moves the ball out of their feet and passes to the striker • Striker then shoots at goal, before the coach calls an alternative number • Striker scores as many goals as possible in 8 shots • Players rotate so that each get a go at being the striker POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Servers are asked to vary the delivery – some along floor / some in air etc 2. Servers have to pass to another server before they pass to striker 3. Encourage the striker to move in the area before receiving 4. SESSION 2 PLAYING MOMENT ATTACKING | CORE SKILL STRIKING THE BALL | FOCUS SHOOTING OPEN CURRICULUM SKILL TRAINING SETUP • Area of up to 30 x 20m, split into 2 areas (15x20m). Modify area depending on the number of players • Assign 2 goal keepers, a defender in each area and split players into two teams of equal numbers. Servers are asked to vary the delivery – some along floor / some in air etc 2. Strikers can play back to the server once if they can’t shoot 3. If defenders get the ball back to the defender, it removes a point from the attacker’s score 4. Add up each striker’s score to come up with a team total (Reds vs Blues) 5. Change to 2 attackers and 2 defenders EXERCISE TASK • Can we shoot quickly using minimal touches to hit the target? PLAYER TASK EXAMPLES • Can you pass the ball so that the forward can shoot 1st time? • Can you move quickly towards the ball as it leaves the passers foot? Modify depending on the age and ability of players involved • Cones used to mark out the thirds of the pitch • Two teams of equal numbers, bibbed accordingly • GKs for each team • Footballs beside each goal and around the playing area HOW TO PLAY • Teams play a regular game of football • A maximum of 2 attackers are allowed in the final third at any one time • A maximum of 1 defender is allowed to follow attackers into the final third (creating a 2v1) • If defending team win it in their attacking third, they are able to attack the goal immediately POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. 2 attackers and 2 defenders allowed into the final third 2. 3 attackers and 2 defenders allowed into the final third SKILL OUTCOMES • Movement to receive • Receiving to shoot • Power of shot • Accuracy of shot RETURN TO CONTENTS 9 NEW ZEALAND FOOTBALL SKILLS CENTRE OPEN CURRICULUM WWW.NZFOOTBALL.CO.NZ
SESSION 3 PLAYING MOMENT DEFENDING | CORE SKILL TACKLING | FOCUS TACKLING WHEN FACING AN ATTACKER OPEN CURRICULUM SKILL INTRODUCTION SETUP • Area of up to 20 x 20m. Modify area depending on the number and age of players • Set up 8 gates, 2 on every side of the area • 4 defenders in Blue, guarding two gates each • All other players start inside of the area, with out a ball HOW TO PLAY • Red players move around the area, with Blue defenders looking after each gate • When coach calls “Go”, Red players aim to break out through unguarded gates • Blue defenders stop Reds escaping by tagging them • If Reds escape they score 1 point and then re-enter the area to start again POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Introduce ball each for Red players to dribble 2. Introduce ball each for Blue defender to have at feet 3. Use a different “trigger” for players to break out. SESSION 3 PLAYING MOMENT DEFENDING | CORE SKILL TACKLING | FOCUS TACKLING WHEN FACING AN ATTACKER OPEN CURRICULUM SKILL TRAINING SETUP • Area of up to 20 x 20m. • Inside the area, use cones to create 4m triangles • Split the group evenly and assign half (Blues) to the triangles • 1 player per triangle • All other players (Reds) have a ball each and are attackers HOW TO PLAY • Reds dribble around the area and ‘attack’ the triangles from any possible side • Only 1 player can attack a triangle at the same time • Attackers attempt to enter one side of a triangle and exit another side whilst retaining the ball • If successful they win 1 point • After each attempt, Red attackers dribble around an outside cone before attacking another triangle • Defenders attempt to win the ball or prevent the attacker getting through the area • Swap over defenders after a period of time POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Add up all individual scores to create a team score (Reds vs Blues) 2. If defender wins possession, they keep the ball and the player who lost possession becomes the defender EXERCISE TASK • When an attacker is dribbling at you, can you limit them to 1 route through the triangle PLAYER TASK EXAMPLES • Can you always make sure you can see the ball and the side of the triangle RETURN TO CONTENTS you want them to dribble to • Once they start going to the side you showed them, can you win the ball or prevent them from keeping the ball under control 11 NEW ZEALAND FOOTBALL SKILLS CENTRE OPEN CURRICULUM WWW.NZFOOTBALL.CO.NZ
SESSION 3 PLAYING MOMENT DEFENDING | CORE SKILL TACKLING | FOCUS TACKLING WHEN FACING AN ATTACKER OPEN CURRICULUM SKILL GAME SETUP • Area of up to 50x30m. Modify area for number and age of players • 2 equal teams, bibbed accordingly • GK in each goal HOW TO PLAY • Players on each team are allocated a number (eg 1,2,3,4,5 etc) • Normal game is played with team scores kept • Whilst the game is going on, there is also an individual battle going on between players of the same number • Each time a player tackles their direct opponent, they score a point in their individual battle POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. SESSION 4 PLAYING MOMENT ATTACKING | CORE SKILL 1v1’S | FOCUS ATTACKING WITH A CHASING DEFENDER OPEN CURRICULUM SKILL INTRODUCTION SETUP • Set up 2 squares • 1 x 15x15m square in the middle • 1 x 30x30m square around the smaller square • Set up 4 gates, using cones, in each corner of the larger square • Create 4 equal teams with 1 ball per team HOW TO PLAY • Each team passes to each other in the small square • Encourage players to take minimum touches before passing • Encourage players to receive the ball in different parts of the square • When the coach shouts go, the player with the ball must exit the middle square and dribble through a gate with the ball under control POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Provide players with a time limit to break through the gate 2. Make it a race where the first player through a gate (with ball under control) gets a point for their team 3. On the “Go”, players that aren’t in possession can chase and try to tag a player before they reach the gate 4. SESSION 4 PLAYING MOMENT ATTACKING | CORE SKILL 1v1’S | FOCUS ATTACKING WITH A CHASING DEFENDER OPEN CURRICULUM SKILL TRAINING SETUP • Area of up to 30 x 20m. Modify depending on the amount and ability of players involved • 2 teams of equal numbers, bibbed accordingly • 2 small goals placed at the end of the area • Line of cones 10m away from the goals, creating a scoring zone • 2 starting cones placed 3m away from each other, 25m away from the goals HOW TO PLAY • First two players stand at the starting cones, facing the goal • Coach stands 2m behind the players with a ball in hand • Coach rolls the ball towards the goal through the middle of the first two players • Players attempt to reach the ball first and then try to score a goal • Player who reaches the ball second, must attempt to win ball back and score • Play until completion and then next two players play POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Keep individual scores against each other 2. Keep overall team scores 3. If players dispossesses first player to the ball, they pass the ball back to the coach EXERCISE TASK • Can you keep the defender away from the ball at all times? PLAYER TASK EXAMPLES • Can you change your direction to get away from the defender? • Can you change your speed to get close to the goal? Modify depending on the age and ability of players involved • Cones used to mark out the half way line of the pitch • Three teams of equal numbers, bibbed accordingly • Two teams begin on the pitch, one team observing • GKs for each team. • Footballs beside each goal and around the playing area • Rotate playing teams every 2 minutes HOW TO PLAY • Teams play a regular game of football but are only allowed to play in the half of the team with the ball • Team in possession can dribble or pass to break into the opponents half • Only one attacker and 1 defender are allowed inside the attacking half • If attacker scores, play restarts from the scoring team’s GK. If defender wins play remains in that half POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. 2 attackers and 2 defenders allowed into the final third 2. Modify area depending on the number and ability of players involved • Divide the group into three equal groups • 2 players from each group begin inside the area, the other two begin outside of the area at opposite ends • Each group has a ball HOW TO PLAY • Each team must move the ball from one end of the area to the other • Once they reach an end, they carry out the same task in the opposite direction • Outside players must move to receive in a different place next time • All three teams play at the same time • Encourage players to use minimal touches • Players to swap from outside to inside the area whenever they are ready POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Inside players the area must combine before playing out 2. Inside players must combine with outside player before they can play back into the area SKILL OUTCOMES • 1st touch control to play forwards • Movement to receive • Awareness of surrounding before receiving DRINKS BREAK DISCUSSION • What helped you when trying to get the ball successfully from one side to the other? SESSION 5 PLAYING MOMENT ATTACKING | CORE SKILL RECEIVING THE BALL | FOCUS RECEIVING TO ATTACK OPEN CURRICULUM SKILL TRAINING SETUP • Area of up to 30 x 20m. Modify area depending on the number and ability of players • 2 small goals placed at each end of the area • Group divided into 3 teams – Red, Blue and Yellow • All four Reds begin in one half of the area, Blues begin in the other • Yellows begin as defenders, with 2 players in each half HOW TO PLAY • Reds attempt to keep possession and try to transfer the ball to the opposite half (to the Blues). If successful, Reds receive a point • When the ball is transferred, Yellow defenders are allowed to press the ball once the Blues have taken their first touch • Blues then attempt to repeat • If Yellow defenders win the ball, they attempt to score in one of the smaller goals. If they are able to shoot, they change roles with the team who were dispossessed (regardless of scoring) POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. If defending team win possession of the ball they can either attempt to score in a goal, or transfer ball to the other side of the area 2. If defending team win ball and score in the goal, 3 points are taken of the dispossessed team EXERCISE TASK • Can we transfer the ball to the attacking half as quickly as possible? If we can’t, keep it until we can. PLAYER TASK EXAMPLES • Can the team mates provide a passing option to the right, left and far? Modify area depending on age and ability of players • 5 x 3m gates placed around the pitch • Split players into 3 equal teams and bib accordingly HOW TO PLAY • Teams play a regular game, scoring in the regular way • Observing team is set an observation task whilst they are on the sidelines • Change teams after a goal has been scored or after 2mins POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Teams score a goal each time they receive the ball through a gate 2. SESSION 6 PLAYING MOMENT ATTACKING | CORE SKILL RECEIVING THE BALL | FOCUS RECEIVING TO PROTECT OPEN CURRICULUM SKILL INTRODUCTION SETUP • Set up an area of up to 20x10m. Modify area depending on the number and ability of players involved • “Dividing Line” of flat spots are placed through the middle of the playing area • Divide all players into pairs and allocate one a Red bib and one a Blue bib • Pairs have one ball between them, and begin either side of the dividing line HOW TO PLAY • When coach says “Go” player in possession must attempt to keep the ball in their half of the area • Their partner attempts to win possession of the ball and move it to their half of the area. Roles then reverse • The player that has the ball in their side of the area when the time runs out is the winner • Rotate partners and play again POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Change to 2v2, with two players from each side joining together 2. SESSION 6 PLAYING MOMENT ATTACKING | CORE SKILL RECEIVING THE BALL | FOCUS RECEIVING TO PROTECT OPEN CURRICULUM SKILL TRAINING SETUP • Set up two 10x10m areas • Divide players in to two groups of 6 players. 5 wearing Red bibs and one wearing Blue • 4 Reds begin the activity on the outside of the area • 1 Red and 1 Blue begin inside of the area HOW TO PLAY • Players on the outside serve to their player in the centre and work with them to retain the ball • Players on the outside can pass to one another to change the angle (encourage this when a pass to centre player isn’t available) • Players on outside can move along their line but have to stay on edge of square • The defender tries to win the ball by intercepting or tackling. If they gain possession they get 1 point, then return the ball to an outside player to restart • The player in the centre gets 0 points for passing back to the player that gave them it, 1 point for passing to the player to their left or right of the player they received from, or 3 points if the can get it to the player behind from where they received it • Play for 40 seconds to see who wins then swap roles. After each player has had a go, 2 of the outside players then come into the middle POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Service from the outside players is from hands, provided at different heights 2. If defender wins possession they then keep the ball with the outside players EXERCISE TASK • When close to a defender, can you make sure that they do not get a chance to steal the ball? PLAYER TASK EXAMPLES • Can you put your body in between the defender and the ball? • Can you change direction with the ball to stay away from the defender? Modify size of area depending on the age and ability of players. • Divide players into pairs and bib accordingly • Each pair has a ball between them HOW TO PLAY • One player dribbles in front, the other follows at a short distance • The player following tries to remain as close as possible whilst the leader attempts to create space between them and their partner • After 30 seconds, swap roles • After each player has had a go, swap partners and continue • Encourage players to accelerate, decelerate; stop, start; change direction, turn and feint POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Each player has a ball and they attempt to keep up with each other 2. Player without a ball moves and the dribbler must attempt to keep up with them 3. Modify size of area depending on the age and ability of players • Divide players into groups of 3 and provide them each with a different coloured bib • 2 x 2m gates placed at each end of the area HOW TO PLAY • Yellow player is the server, Red is the attacker and Blue is the defender • Yellow passes the ball to Red, who then attempts to dribble through one of the two gates • Once Red has had their first touch, the Blue defender is able to close them down to defender • If blue defender wins possession of the ball, they attempt to dribble through gates and the other end of the area • If a player dribbles through a gate, they are awarded 1 point • After 5 attempts, final scores are added. Roles are rotated POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Defender can travel as soon as the ball enters the area 2. Attacker must also begin outside of the area and move onto the ball to receive 3. Defender must start from a different side of the square on each serve 4. SESSION 8 PLAYING MOMENT DEFENDING | CORE SKILL PRESSING | FOCUS PRESSING AS A UNIT OPEN CURRICULUM SKILL INTRODUCTION SETUP • Set up two areas of 8x8m • Divide players in to two groups of 6 players • 4 players in each area without a bib (attackers). 2 players in each area holding a bib (defenders) • Footballs around the outside of each area HOW TO PLAY • 4 attackers attempt to keep possession of the ball, with out it going outside of the area • 2 defenders attempt to win possession of the ball • If a defender wins possession of the ball, they drop the bib and become one of the attackers. Player who gave away possession picks up the bib and becomes the defender • If defenders touch the ball and it goes out of the area, they remain as a defender POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Attackers are not to remain in the four corners but must move around area 2. If attackers make 10 passes, the defenders stay in for another go once they win possession 3. Teams must have at least one player operating in the opposite half to the ball EXERCISE TASK • Can you try and win possession as quickly as possible whilst ensuring the attackers can’t pass between you? This is the teams “safe” • Split players into teams of 3 (Greens vs Yellows). Set up as shown in diagram • Duplicate another area for remaining players HOW TO PLAY • Each team starts with an equal amount of balls in their ‘safe’ • When the game starts, teams steal a ball from the opposition’s ‘safe’ and must pass to each other and place it in their safe • Each player in the team must pass the ball before placing it in the team’s safe • After 1 minute, see which team has the most balls in their safe • After each game, swap players around so they can play a different role POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Players line up in this order • Each group, including the individual player, need a ball for their team HOW TO PLAY • The 1st player dribbles quickly and attempts to score • Once the 1st player shoots the next group (2 players) attack 2v1 against the player that just attacked • Once the Group of 2 have attacked, they turn and defend the next Group of attackers (3 players). This continues until all groups have attacked. • Encourage teams to attack quickly • If a defender or defending team win the ball, they can score by passing to the coach within 3 seconds POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Add a shooting zone 10m from goal that they have to shoot from within or outside of 2. Place a time limit on how they have to shoot at goal (eg 8 seconds) EXERCISE TASK • Can you get as close to goal to shoot before the defender/s might be able to tackle or block? SESSION 11 PLAYING MOMENT DEFENDING | CORE SKILL STRIKING THE BALL | FOCUS TACKLING WHEN FACING AN ATTACKER OPEN CURRICULUM SKILL GAME SETUP • Two 35x25m pitches set up with a 10m channel between them • Goals at the end of each pitch • Two gates placed in the middle channel, 15m away from each other • 2 teams of 6, each player assigned a number (between 1 and 6) HOW TO PLAY • Pitch 1 starts with a 5v5 game, keeping score as normal • Pitch 2 starts with a 1v1 game, keeping score as normal • Coach calls out a number (for example “number 3”) and both “3’s” will run from Pitch 1 to the middle channel. “3s” play in a 1v1, attempting to dribble through the opponent’s gates • If successful, the winning player joins their teammate on Pitch 2, creating an overload. The other player juggles a football for 45 seconds before also joining Pitch 2 • Coach calls another number, players enter the middle channel and the game repeats • Score is kept on both pitches, adding to an overall score POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. If the defender wins the ball, they swap roles with the player that lost possession • Once 5 passes have been completed, attackers can play a through pass for a team mate to run onto and score • As soon as the ball is played, defender is allowed to chase and attempt to dispossess • Attackers must attempt to score passed the line of markers • If the defender wins the ball, they attempt to play back to the square. They then become an attacker • If the attackers score, the defender remains POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Increase the distance to the line of markers 2. Shot must be taken from inside the line of markers • One defender is allowed to leave the cone and attempt to tackle the attacker. SESSION 13 PLAYING MOMENT ATTACKING | CORE SKILL RECEIVING THE BALL | FOCUS RECEIVING TO ATTACK OPEN CURRICULUM SKILL TRAINING SETUP • Area of 36x18m, divided into two 18x18m squares. Modify size of area depending on the age and number of players • 9 attackers (Reds). 7 of them in one area as shown and 2 at the far end of the opposite area • 3 defenders (Blues) starting in the area with the 7 Reds HOW TO PLAY • Attackers play a 7v3 in one of the squares. 4 Red attackers stay on the outside of the area • Attackers attempt to transfer the ball to the opposite square • If successful, they receive a point • Once the ball is in the opposite area, players transfer across until there is a 7v3 again (2 Reds remain at the opposite end) • Reds attempt to transfer the ball again to the opposite area • If Blues win it, they attempt to dribble out of the area to score a point • Rotate the defenders on a regular basis POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. 4 passes need to be completed before transferring to the opposite area 2. Defenders need to keep the ball for three passes in order to score a point EXERCISE TASK • Can we transfer the ball to the other target player as quickly as possible, if we can’t, keep it until we can PLAYER TASK EXAMPLES • Can you get 1 attacker to the right, 1 to the left, 1 in the middle and 1 far (player on central line)? • Can you position yourself to receive the ball facing forwards to? Modify area depending on age and ability of players • Split players into 3 equal teams and bib accordingly HOW TO PLAY • Teams play in a 4v4 game, with 1 common player • Teams play a regular game, scoring into the opponents goal • Common player plays for the team in possession • Observing team is set an observation task whilst they are on the sidelines • Change teams after a goal has been scored or after 2 minutes POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. As soon as a team score, they attack the opposite goal immediately. SESSION 14 PLAYING MOMENT DEFENDING | CORE SKILL PRESSING | FOCUS PRESSING AS A UNIT OPEN CURRICULUM SKILL INTRODUCTION SETUP • Area of up to 20x20m. • Modify area depending on age and ability of players • 4 Blues as taggers. Blues are taggers and link arms in pairs • Yellows start inside the area, with a ball each HOW TO PLAY • Yellows dribble the ball, keeping into under control and inside the area • Blues attempt to tag Yellows and must remain linked at all times • If a Yellow is tagged, they must link arms with the taggers, creating a longer chain • The winner is the last person to be tagged • Start game again but with different taggers to begin with POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Taggers hold a bib between them to link (wider area) 2. Modify area depending on the number and ability of players • 6 players in each area - 4 attackers (Red) and 2 defenders (Blue) • Extra footballs positioned around the outside HOW TO PLAY • Reds attempt to retain possession and score a point by passing between the 2 blue defenders • Defenders try to win possession and prevent the attackers from scoring points by passing between them • Defenders need to win possession and have it under control • Once a defender has possession, that sequence finishes and the player who lost possession plus the player who passed it to them, become the new defenders POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Add smaller goals on the outside of the squares for defenders to pass into once they win possession EXERCISE TASK • Can you try and win possession as quickly as possible whilst ensuring the attackers can’t pass between you? PLAYER TASK EXAMPLES • Can the closest player to the ball, close the opponent down quickly whilst cutting off a pass to a teammate • As your partner closes the ball down, can you make sure the player with the ball can’t pass to his teammates behind you? Modify area depending on the number and ability of players. • Players divided into two teams of equal numbers, and bibbed accordingly • Flat cones dividing the pitch into thirds, as shown in the diagram HOW TO PLAY • Normal game with teams attempting to score in each others goal • Teams must attempt to play through each third of the pitch. Teams score 1 point for each goal • Teams are awarded more points when they score immediately after winning the ball off the opposition • Depending on where they won the ball, points are awarded as follows: - Attacking third (closest to opponents goal) – 5 points - Middle third – 2 points - Defending third (furthest away from opponents goal) – 1 point POSSIBLE PROGRESSIONS 1. Alter the points to encourage a different types of pressing.
