WESTLAKE GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL NETBALL OVERVIEW Abstract This document provides a detailed layout of the proposed netball overview for Westlake Girls High School. It includes a breakdown of the fees, a detailed timeline of events and a breakdown of Senior 1, 2, Year 10 Team 1 and Year 9 Team 1 as well as general school netball.

Pathway UNISS Squad NZSS Squad Senior 1 or 2 College Netball Squad Year 10 Cygnet Program and Senior 1 or 2 Team 1 Junior Netball Senior 1 or 2 Year 9 Cygnet Program and Senior Netball Team 1 Senior Netball Senior 1 or 2 (see pathway above) Senior Netball Senior Netball 2
Senior 1 and 2 Team Structure Seniors 1 and 2 will consist of a minimum of 10 players per team for the North Harbour Secondary Schools Competition and Auckland Secondary Schools Competition (Senior 1 only). Two additional players will be selected to join Senior 1 for Tournaments. Each team will have a Coach, Assistant Coach and Team Manager appointed. Trials Trials for the 2015 competitive season will be held in Term 1 2015. Trial Dates for 2015 Payment of Season Playing Fee is due on Week 4, Fri 20th February at the latest. If you pay for Senior 1 but are not selected, you will be reimbursed the difference. If you are selected for Senior 1, but have only paid for Senior 2 or Senior Netball, you must pay the difference. Dates for Seniors 1-4 trials for 2015 will be in Week 5 Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th February both trials will be held at school under the covered courts from 6.00 pm – 8.00 pm. Trials for Seniors 1 and 2 for the 2016 season will be held on Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st October Week 2 Term 4 2015, these trials will be invitation only. After these trials a squad of approximately 30 players will be chosen, they will be fitness tested before the end of Term 4 and a training programme will be given to each player. The players will be required to complete their off-season fitness programme, which will be tracked using Total Coaching. The squad will then re-fitness test and retrial in Term 1 2016, the teams will be narrowed down to a minimum of 10 players per team, and the teams named. Practices Practices for both teams are held at Westlake Girls High School and the facilities available include, four covered courts and three outdoor courts. Both Senior 1 and 2 teams will have practice twice a week on top of the regular fitness that the players are expected to do. As part of practice, players are encouraged to provide feedback to their respective coaches and assistant coaches on their individual performance at the previous game as well as the overall team performance. Practice times will be agreed upon by the coach, assistant coach and players in the team. If you are unable to make a practice you are required to let your coach know before the day of your practice. But please be aware that without a good reason, missing practice may also mean that you will not take the court that week. However you are still expected to be at the games. Your coach will be keeping track of how many practices you miss and if you are consistently missing practice the Director of Netball and/or the Director of Sport will be notified and you may be required to explain your absences to them. If your explanation is not satisfactory or the absences continue you will face serious consequences e.g. being removed from the team. If you are injured you are still required to attend practice and games unless the injury is of a severe enough nature that prevents this. Senior 1 and 2 Competitions North Harbour Secondary Schools Competition for Senior 1 is played on a Wednesday evenings at Netball North Harbour during terms 2 and 3. Games are ten minute quarters and start at 4.30 and 5.30. Senior 1 also has the opportunity to compete in the Auckland Secondary School Premier Competition on Saturday mornings as well as a number of tournaments, including but not limited to; UNISS, NZSS and College Netball. All umpires for Senior 1 are provided by Netball North Harbour, Auckland Netball and the respective tournaments. 3
Senior 2 games will either be on Wednesday evenings or Saturday mornings at Netball North Harbour depending on their grade. Umpires will be provided for by Netball North Harbour. Netball North Harbour Tournament is held on 12th May, UNISS is 31st August-4th September in Hamilton and NZSS is in Ashburton from the 6th-9th October. All girls are expected to be at all games for the season. If you are unable to be at the game for some reason you are to notify your coach no later than the day before your game. Your coach will be keeping track of how many games you miss and if you are consistently missing games the Director of Netball and/or the Director of Sport will be notified and you may be required to explain your absences to them. If your explanation is not satisfactory or the absences continue you will face serious consequences e.g. being removed from the team. If you are injured, you are still expected to be at the games to show support for your team depending on the severity of the injury. Player Development Leadership Opportunities Team Captains Coaches are to appoint a team captain and vice-captain for both Senior 1 and 2. If the captain is injured and unable to play coaches can, at their discretion, appoint an on-court captain for the duration of the injury. If the captain is unable to perform their duties or behaves in a manner not befitting a Westlake Girls High School student the coach, in conjunction with the netball coordinator, may use their discretion to select an alternate captain/vice-captain. The coaches of Seniors 1 and 2 are to hold meetings with their respective captains and vice-captains to ensure the captains/vice-captains know what is expected of them and it is also an opportunity for the captain/vice-captain to talk with the coach about any problems or issues that may have arisen in the team. Player Coaches All Senior 1 and 2 players are expected to coach a Year 9 team in pairs to ensure that the skills and knowledge that they receive is passed down thereby ensuring a greater pool of developed players to choose from for future Senior teams. Senior 1 and 2 coaches are expected to share their knowledge of skills and drills to enable this knowledge to be passed down. Netball North Harbour will come into school and hold coaching workshops in term 1 for the Senior 1 and 2 girls, as well as any other girls who wish to coach a netball team in the 2015 season. These sessions will be compulsory for all Senior 1 and 2 players. If players are unable to make the session due to an assessment they are required to seek the information missed from other players. Senior 1 and 2 players must attend rules sessions to ensure that they have a basic working knowledge of the rules of netball. Player coaches will be selected by the Netball Coordinator. Fitness Programmes All Senior 1 and 2 players are expected to maintain a high standard of fitness. The coaches and assistant coaches of the teams will oversee the fitness that the players are doing both on and off season. All Senior 1 and 2 players are expected to achieve a minimum of 15 on the Yoyo Test. 4

Year 10 Team 1/Senior Netball Team Structure Year 10 and senior netball will consist of teams of 8-10 players for the North Harbour Secondary Schools Competition. Each team will have a Coach and Team Manager appointed. Year 10 Team 1 will be ranked in accordance with their strength against other senior teams therefore Year 10 Team 1 may be Senior 3 or 4. Year 10 players that show exceptional ability and talent could be selected for Senior 1 or 2. Trials Trials for the 2015 competitive season will be held in term 1 2015. Trial Dates for 2015 Payment of Season Playing Fee is due on Week 4, Fri 20th February at the latest. If you pay for Senior 1 but are not selected, you will be reimbursed the difference. Competitions Netball North Harbour Secondary Schools Competition North Harbour Secondary Schools Competition for all senior netball is played on a Saturday morning at Netball North Harbour during terms 2 and 3. Games are ten minute quarters and have a variety of start times. Teams are expected to provide their own umpires. All girls are expected to be at all games for the season. If you are unable to be at the game for some reason you are to notify your coach no later than the day before your game. Your coach will be keeping track of how many games you miss and if you are consistently missing games the Director of Netball and/or the Director of Sport will be notified and you may be required to explain your absences to them. If your explanation is not satisfactory or the absences continue you will face serious consequences e.g. being removed from the team. If you are injured, you are still expected to be at the games to show support for your team unless the injury is of a severe enough nature to prevent this. Social Competition There will be a 9 week internal competition starting in Term 2 for those students who do not wish to play competitive netball. Games will start at 3.45 in the covered courts. Players are expected to wear full school PE uniform or appropriate sporting attire. Bibs will be provided. Player Development Leadership Opportunities Team Captains Coaches are to appoint a team captain and vice-captain for all senior teams. If the captain is injured and unable to play Coaches can, at their discretion, appoint an on-court captain for the duration of the injury. If the captain is unable to perform their duties or behaves in a manner not befitting Westlake Girls High School the coach, in conjunction with the netball coordinator, may use their discretion to select an alternate captain/vice-captain. The coaches of Senior 3/Year 10 Team 1 are to hold meetings with their respective captains and vice-captains to ensure the captains know what is expected of them and it is also an opportunity for the captain/vice-captain to talk with the coach about any problems or issues that may have arisen in the team. If a player is taken to tournament who does not have the full general uniform, they are expected to buy one, or borrow from another player. For all other Senior teams the general uniform is optional. Year 9 Team 1 is also able to attend tournaments including, but not limited to; Auckland Pre-Season Tournament, North Harbour and Auckland Combined Tournament. Netball North Harbour Junior Tournament is held on the 26th May. All girls are expected to be at all games for the season.
