SEPTEMBER 12 11:00am In Person & Live Stream Stop Judging Others! Romans 14:1-23 Listen to sermon recordings at www.abingdonbaptist.org From Our Pastor. . . A paper ballot will be mailed to every resident church member this week. Each member will mark his/her selections according to the instructions on the ballot and return it by mail or in person to the church office for collection and counting. All ballots must be received no later than noon on Thursday, September 23 in order to be counted. Results of the deacon election will be announced on Sunday, September 26 and will be published in The Banner that week. Those elected will begin serving on October 1, 2021. Alma Hunt Offering – Our week of prayer for our annual Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions begins this Sunday, September 12. This offering is collected and administered as a joint venture of our Woman’s Missionary Union of Virginia (WMUV) and the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV). The 2021 state goal is $800.000, and our ABC giving goal is $5,000. You can check the current total given in The Banner’s financial report section starting next week. You may give to this offering from now until the end of October by bringing or mailing to the church a check made out to ABC with a designation of “Alma Hunt” on the for line. You may also give online using the “Alma Hunt Offering” directed giving option in the dropdown menu on the giving page. Prayer guides and giving envelopes are available at the church. Thank you for continuing your record of generous financial support for Virginia missions through the Alma Hunt Offering. Continue to pray, give, and go as God directs. Move and Pounding for Shawn & Liz Howell – Shawn and Liz will make the move to Abingdon this Saturday, September 11. We have a team of men with a truck going to help them move. Several ladies from the church plan to meet Liz at 10am on Saturday at the rental condo (849 Barclay Dr., Abingdon) to help set up. The truck with their furniture should arrive around 1pm. Any men who can help unload the truck are welcome to join in. If you plan to help, please let me know, and I will text you a better ETA on Saturday. Also, this Sunday, September 12, we will welcome Shawn & Liz with a good old-fashioned ABC “pounding” as they stock their new pantry. Instead of pounding them with food items, would you pound them with a gift card to your favorite local food store? That way they can get what they need. If you would like to participate in this gift-card pounding, please drop off or mail your gift card to the church office or hand it to Pastor Bill by this Sunday morning. We will present your pounding gifts to them during the Welcome on Sunday. Thank you for your love and generosity as we welcome Shawn & Liz into our Abingdon Baptist family. ABC Church Picnic and Hymn Sing – On Sunday, October 3 immediately after our morning worship service, we will depart from the church for Hungry Mother State Park. We will take the church coach, which can seat 25 persons. Also, some of us will need to form carpools for the journey to the park. The church has reserved a pavilion with two fireplaces and will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, and drinks. Those who drive vehicles will be asked to pay a $7 fee for parking. Please register for the Church Picnic on Realm, use the Picnic Registration button on the church website, or contact Trina in the church office by September 26.

Continued from Pastor Bill... Praying of Afghanis – “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. . . . Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Ro 12:14,21). These words of Paul resonate with the command of Jesus in His Sermon on the Mount, “Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you” (Mt 5:44). This is a hard command to follow. Our natural human tendency is for revenge or at best to do nothing for an enemy. However, we are to love our enemies just as Jesus loved us when He willingly gave His life for our sins on Calvary’s cross (cf., Ro 5:8). As we see and hear about the unfolding tragedies in Afghanistan, we wonder what to do about our enemies, the Taliban, ISIS-K, and other terrorist groups. How can we respond to them with blessings instead of curses? How can we love them? In light of the mercies of God shown to us in Christ Jesus and with minds renewed by His Spirit, we must look for transformation of every relationship, even with enemies, through the grace of God. Jesus points us in at least one possible direction with His command to ". . . pray for those who persecute you” (Mt 5:44b). We can pray for Afghanis, both friends and foes, for Afghani Christians, for our U.S. military personnel and families, and for American citizens and supporters who remain in hostile territories. The International Mission Board (IMB) and North American Mission Board (NAMB) call on us to pray and give specific guidance regarding how we can bless others through our intercession with the Father on their behalf. Here are ten ways they suggest for us to pray for Afghanis We start streaming at 10:45am Tune in to check your connection and to prepare for Worship Service will begin at 11:00am Full in-person or Livestream Worship. Doors open at 10:45am
