THE BUILDING On February 1st, Silkwood School took possession of the PC Hub Building at 36 Laver Drive, Robina. Silkwood secured a lease for the entire building at 36 Laver Drive until the end of 2021. As the site won't be fully utilised until 2022, when the Senior Campus opens, it was determined to be a more financially viable option for the School to lease the building until this time. Upon opening, the School will purchase the building, adding the address to its property portfolio.
ROBINA EXCURSION We were excited to familiarise ourselves with our new neighbourhood. On Thursday 10 June, our Year 9, 10 & 11 students enjoyed their first excursion to see the new Senior Campus at Robina. We disembarked from the Silkwood buses at the Robina train station and tested out the walk from the station to the school. The students spent some time exploring the school building and brainstorming ideas for furniture, sports and games to play on their lunch breaks, uniform and the proposed timetable. We talked about the purpose of moving into this building: preparing our senior students for the real world by bringing them closer to mentors, employment opportunities, services, and further education opportunities to extend their learning. We also had a walking tour of the local gym and pool (EMF Performance Centre), the library and community centre where we can stage art exhibitions and performances, the Gold Coast Cricket Centre and Bill Pippen Oval, and local shops and businesses. One of our enterprising Year 10 students has already started talks with Robina Library about volunteering opportunities! 04
Students completed a treasure hunt It’s going to be hard challenge developed by our Real World to go back to Learning Coordinator, Tai Hood, to help Mount Nathan now. them find out about local businesses opposite the school, in Arbour Ave. So many of the business owners came out and said hello and helped the students with their questions. There was excitement in the community as members of the public waved at us and complimented us on our students’ polite behaviour. Our Advisors sampled the local café, The Market Place, who are excited about servicing the school through a lunch order system. The day culminated in a BBQ and games at Jack Wilson Park, where the students enjoyed the playground facilities. One of the students was so excited about the new school that he commented, “It’s going to be hard to go back to Mount Nathan now!”. We look forward to having some of our students share their thoughts about the new campus in Semester 2, 2021. "We even found a resident Bush Turkey!" OUR NEW NEIGHBOURHOOD 05
Frequently Asked Questions 1 WHY ARE WE MOVING OUR SENIOR STUDENTS TO A NEW CAMPUS IN 2022? To better support the Senior School Learning Program by providing easier access to mentors, employment & further education opportunities, services, and sports facilities to extend student learning. 2 WHY DID SILKWOOD CHOOSE THIS PARTICULAR BUILDING FOR THE SENIOR CAMPUS? After much consideration around the opportunities provided by central business districts such as Southport and Robina, and further consideration for transport options and educational zoning, Robina was by far the best location to provide our students with a safe and connected community to best support their learning goals. The PC Hub Building is well located, close to public transport, local businesses, employment and further education opportunities. 3 HOW WILL SILKWOOD SCHOOL SUPPORT FAMILIES WITH TRANSPORT CHALLENGES? We understand the transport challenges faced by some of our families regarding the location of the Senior Campus, and for some, the location will solve these challenges. The School Team is researching public transport services to provide as much information as possible for families before the 2022 school year. Please refer to the back page of this document for more details on public transport services. Rest assured, we are here to assist and provide support. 4 WILL THE STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS TO SPORTING FACILITIES & HPE OPPORTUNITIES AT ROBINA? Yes, they will. The campus is close to Cbus Super Stadium, Bill Pippen Cricket Oval (home of the Gold Coast District Cricket Club), Bond Institute of Health & Sport, as well as gyms, swim centres and much more. The School Team will spend time over the latter half of 2021 exploring these facilities and creating relationships with these providers to develop a plan to work together from next year. 5 WILL A NEW SCHOOL UNIFORM BE REQUIRED? The current navy shirt will remain the main uniform item, paired with plain black or navy bottoms. There will be a dress code and free choice of workplace-appropriate dress while at school, with the uniform being required for school representational activities only. However, some students may choose to wear uniforms at all times. 06
We have collated the most common questions being asked by parents & carers, our School Team and the local community. 6 WILL THE CAMPUS HAVE A TUCKSHOP? The School is currently in negotiations with a local cafe to provide a selection of tuckshop options for students and Team Members to order. We will provide more information on this later in 2021. 7 WILL THE STUDENTS BE ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE CAMPUS DURING LUNCH BREAKS? Consideration is being given to allow students to leave the school campus during lunch breaks. It is important to provide our senior students the opportunity to grow into their responsibilities as School Leaders by setting positive examples. Clear expectations will be set to ensure students understand their responsibility as they interact with members of our new community. 8 WILL THE CURRENT TEACHING TEAM BE MOVING TO ROBINA WITH THE STUDENTS? We will be announcing the Robina Teaching Team later in 2021, which will mostly consist of current High School Advisors with, potentially, one to two new recruits due to staff placements across both Middle School and Senior School. 9 WILL THE SENIOR STUDENTS CELEBRATE WITH CEREMONIES & FESTIVALS? Yes, they will. Moments that Matter is an important part of The Silkwood Way, and it will be an important time in our senior students' lives. Senior students will be invited back to our Mount Nathan Campus for many opportunities during the school year, to celebrate transition ceremonies and festivals, and to reconnect with the Primary and Middle School communities. 10 HOW WILL STUDENT & STAFF WELLBEING BE SUPPORTED AT THE SENIOR CAMPUS? Robina will have a dedicated Wellbeing Space, which will be looked after by one of our current Wellbeing Advisors. Our learning support initiatives will remain the same as is delivered at Mount Nathan, with a Learning Enrichment Advisor supporting students alongside our Real World Learning Coordinator, Tai Hood. We will also have quiet learning spaces and reading areas to support students. 07
