May 1, 2022 Seeing the Word Anew A nurturing community in Jesus Christ reflecting God’s love for the world as we Worship, Grow and Serve.
Prelude …lovest thou me more than these? Locklair (based on John 21:15 and Hymn 720) Welcome Thank you for joining us today. Please take a moment and sign the red friendship pad and let us know you joined us in worship today! * Preparing Our Hearts for Worship (this is a prayer we will sing to prepare our hearts for worship) Give Thanks Smith Give thanks with a grateful heart, Give thanks to the Holy One; Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son. (repeat) And now let the weak say, “ I am strong,” Let the poor say, “I am rich” Because of what the Lord has done for us; (repeat) Give thanks. Give thanks. Give thanks. * Call To Worship (responsive) Psalm 30 One: Sing praises to the LORD, O you his faithful ones, and give thanks to his holy name. For his anger is but for a moment; his favor is for a lifetime. All: Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning. One: As for me, I said in my prosperity, "I shall never be moved." All: You have turned our mourning into dancing; you have taken off our sackcloth and clothed us with joy, so that we may praise you and not be silent. One: O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever. * Hymn 826 Lift High The Cross crucifer (refrain): Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim till all the world adore his sacred name. Come, Christians, follow where our Savior trod, the Lamb victorious, Christ, the Son of God. (refrain) All newborn servants of the Crucified bear on their brow the seal of Christ who died. (refrain) O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree, your death has brought us life eternally. (refrain) So shall our song of triumph ever be: praise to the Crucified for victory. (refrain)
Prayer of the Day (unison) God of the Ages whose almighty hand has created all that is. The God who loves the creation that encircles us. The God of beauty beyond our wildest imagination. Who has made us stewards of all that is around us. Help us to take care of all that you have entrusted to us. Your creation is strug- gling around us and we are worried as we watch what is happening. Temperatures are ris- ing, mighty storms are destroying, drought and fires are ravaging our land. Help us to work to- gether to love and respect the gift of your beautiful creation. Amen Call to Confession Prayer of Confession (unison) Almighty God, you have raised Jesus from death to life, and crowned him Lord of all. We confess that we have not bowed before him, or acknowledged his rule in our lives. We have gone along with the ways of the world, and failed to give him glory. Forgive us, and raise us from sin, that we may be your faithful people, obeying the commands of our Lord Jesus Christ, who rules the world and is head of the church, his body. Amen Silent Prayer of Confession Assurance of Pardon Anthem Chancel Choir Prayer for Illumination (unison) Guide us, O God, by your Word and Spirit, that in your light we may see light, in your truth find freedom, and in your will discover your peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Scripture Readings Revelation 5:11-14 ; John 21:1-19 Revelation 5:11-14 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels surrounding the throne and the living creatures and the elders; they numbered myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, singing with full voice, "Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!" Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, singing, "To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!" And the four living creatures said, "Amen!" And the elders fell down and worshiped. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. John 21:1-19 After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, "Children, you have no fish, have you?" They answered him, "No." He said to them, "Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast
it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off. When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?" because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my lambs." A second time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Tend my sheep." He said to him the third time, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go." (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, "Follow me." This is the word of our Lord. Thanks be to God. Sermon Feed My Sheep Rev. Eric Markman Hymn 720 Jesus Calls Us galilee Jesus calls us: o'er the tumult of our life's wild, restless sea; day by day his sweet voice soundeth saying, "Christian, follow me.” Jesus calls us from the worship of the vain world's golden store, from each idol that would keep us, saying, "Christian, love me more." In our joys and in our sorrows, days of toil and hours of ease, still he calls, in cares and pleasures, "Christian, love me more than these." Jesus calls us: by thy mercies, Savior, may we hear thy call, give our hearts to thy obedience, serve and love thee best of all.
Affirmation of Faith (unison) The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen. Let all the heavens sound forth Jesus’ name; let all the earth sing his glory and fame. Ocean and mountain, stream, forest, and flower echo these praises and tell of God's power.
