FEBRUARY 17, 2021 SCOTT UMC NEWS Staying Connected Ash Wednesday Observed Virtually Because of the pandemic and bad weather, several members and friends of Scott observed Ash Wednesday together online, a significant departure from how we have traditionally observed the start of this holy season. Lent is a season of 40 days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter. Lent comes from the on relationship with God, growing as Anglo-Saxon word lencten, meaning disciples and extending ourselves, often “lengthen” and refers to the lengthening choosing to give up something or to days of spring. The 40 days represents volunteer and give of ourselves for the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, others. enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry. Sundays in Lent are not counted in the 40 days because each Sunday Lent is a time of repentance, prayer, represents a "mini-Easter." That is why fasting and preparation for the coming of you will see the designation "Sunday in Easter. It is a time of self-examination Lent" rather than "Sunday of Lent" in the and reflection. In the early church, Lent naming of these Sundays. On each began as a period of fasting and Lord's Day in Lent, while Lenten fasts preparation for baptism by new converts continue, the reverent spirit of Lent is and then became a time of penance by tempered with joyful anticipation of the all Christians. Today, Christians focus Resurrection.
