Saints Spotlight
Janice Marano embodies what it means to be a Marymount Saint committed to service. She received her associate degree in nursing from Marymount in 1977, her bachelor’s in nursing from Marymount in 1982 and her master’s in psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1991. She is a registered nurse and will be taking over the Director of Nursing position at Anita’s Angels, a home healthcare nursing service in New Jersey. In her years of being a nurse, Janice has worked in various hospital units, such as cardiac care units, ICUs, medical surgical units, drug addiction units and open-heart surgery units. Her commitment to service can be seen not only in her nursing career, but also in her love of volunteering. One example of this is her involvement in the program Driving for Surviving, where she taught children with cancer how to drive mini ponies with carriages. Doing this activity gives the children a sense of control in their lives while also allowing their families to connect with and support others in similar situations. Janice is also a Board member and coach for the organization First Tee of Raritan Valley, a youth development organization which also serves underprivileged children. Through the game of golf, children are taught nine core values like honesty, judgement, respect and integrity, as well as healthy habits. Janice has also volunteered with various other organizations such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters, the U.S. Equestrian Team, the American Cancer Society and the Carrier Clinic for orphan children in Belle Mead, NJ. During the pandemic, she volunteered with the Medical Reserve Corps in New Jersey where she helped administer COVID vaccines. Janice says that her time at Marymount and the importance of service in the Catholic faith has encouraged her throughout her life to continue taking part in community service. In her free time, Janice likes to stay active with horseback riding, tennis and golf. She also enjoys learning the piano and flute, reading, and spending time with friends and family, including her daughter. Faculty Spotlight
Growing up, Dr. Todd Rimkus always knew he wanted to work with animals. In order to reach his goal, he listened to the important advice he now tells his students — follow who you want to be. He did just that by working with animals in vet offices and zoos, until everything fell into place for him as a graduate assistant studying sea turtles. Dr. Rimkus joined Marymount in 1996, and is the Director of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. He received his B.S. from the University of Illinois, and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Iowa State University. In 2007, he brought his first group of students to the small city of
y g g p y Gales Point, Belize to study sea turtles, where he ended up falling in love with the community and the people. In 2009, Dr. Rimkus and his students founded Hawksbill Hope, a charity organization for the conservation of sea turtles. In 2017, everything changed for Dr. Rimkus. While visiting Gales Point, he met a child named James who wanted to attend high school but couldn’t afford it. Dr. Rimkus decided to pay the $300 for his tuition, and in doing that, opened the door to do even more good in the small community. He founded the Hawksbill Hope Scholars program, which helps fund the high school tuition for every child in Gales Point who wants to attend. It was at this point when Dr. Rimkus had a life-changing epiphany — his life’s work was not only about sea turtles, but also about education. Dr. Rimkus was honored by the class of 2017 with the Robert A. Draghi Outstanding Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, and says his favorite part about his work is getting to interact with his students. His passion for education can also be seen when he’s teaching elementary and middle schoolers about turtles and other reptiles, inspiring them to be interested in STEM. Dr. Rimkus says he has a deep drive inside of him to do good and make a difference. His impact can be seen in James, the first child whom he helped fund the tuition for, who ended up becoming the salutatorian of his graduating class. In his free time, Dr. Rimkus loves spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. He is currently planning an alternative spring break trip to Gales Point next year, where he and his students can do even more good for the community.
