Professional Development Chair
Penny Guimont, BSc.Pharm., RPh, CGP

Guimont graduated with Honors from the University of British Columbia from the
Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2005. After being accepted into the
Shoppers Drug Mart Scholarship Program, Guimont was placed in the small town
of Lindsay, Ontario for two years. Leaving all friends and family out west,
Guimont began her career as a pharmacist in Ontario.

Guimont accepted a full-time position at a Shoppers Drug Mart in Lindsay and
a part-time position at the Ross Memorial Hospital. Under the mentorship of Jim
Mann, a well recognized U of T professor was initiated, a Medication
Reconciliation Program , utilizing technicians, and presented a poster at the 2006
CSHP conference. Furthermore, Guimont was fortunate to be a part of a
multidisciplinary team brought together to initiate a chronic Disease Management
Program. Guimont feels very grateful to have had the experience as a hospital
pharmacist; and feels it gave her invaluable clinical skills and insight into our
profession.

After the 2 year contract was fulfilled, Guimont ventured to Toronto and practiced
as a relief pharmacist. Working in multiple, unfamiliar locations gave be the
ability to see the strengths and weaknesses in various practice settings and
confidence to excel despite the tremendous variation in individual community
pharmacies.

Throughout these changes in practice locations and work colleagues, one aspect
of Guimont’s career remained constant - a passion for providing enhanced
patient care. During Guimont’s time as a community, hospital and relief
pharmacist, the number of preventable drug related problems became
increasingly apparent. With phones ringing, prescriptions to be prepared and
labeled, and a line-up of patients waiting to get their medications, it seemed
impossible to provide patients with the level of care and attention I believed they
required. Guimont’s desire to help others paired with the obvious need for
enhanced medication consulting in the community, led to the conception of
PillTalk. PillTalk is a medication consulting business launched with my
Guimont’s sister and business partner, in June of 2011. Essentially, they offer an
innovative perspective to medication management with a focus on
identifying/preventing drug related problems, educating patients
and reconciling medications. PillTalk is also a resource for which patients,
physicians, and other healthcare providers can turn to for assistance with
medication management, and to help facilitate a continuum of care between
providers.

Guimont’s acquired her Geriatric Pharmacist Certification in October 2012. This
has given Guimont the confidence and clinical skill set to provide enhanced
patient services, work closely with physicians to prevent and resolve drug related
problems, and strive for the best medication therapy outcomes in my patients.

The world of pharmacy has changed immensely, even in the Guimont’s 8 years
of practice, and it excites her to be a part of the opportunities that lie ahead for
our profession. Guimont is determined to be a catalyst of our evolving roll and a
leader in promoting and providing pharmaceutical care to the growing aging
population.

Development Coordinator would be an ideal fit to her experiences both past and
present.
