Rotorua Lakes High School “Mauria te pono - Keep steadfastly to the truth” NEWSLETTER ISSUE No. 14 – 21 MAY 2021 CHALKBOARD From the Principal – P. 1 - 2 Information – P. 2 - 3 Student Successes – P. 4 Sport – P. 4 - 5 News from Teachers – P. 6 Careers / Gateway – P. 6 - 8 Notice Board – P. 8 Contacts – P. 8 Kia ora Koutou, Winter sports are now in full swing and many of our teams are having great success in their respective codes. It’s great to see our Boys’ rugby taking off again and the Girls rugby team starting their season with a grading day on Monday. It was also great to see the enthusiasm of our basketballers in their skills session with Bruce Boyce. Our Boys’ Footballers had a very positive week with wins over WHHS for the Seniors and Boys’ High for the Juniors. Can I also thank the many parents and whānau for coming along to support at games and practices – our drive to develop Sports and activities for our students is definitely gaining momentum. As always, a big shout out to our coaches and managers – your time and energy make these opportunities possible. One of the core values that we endeavour to develop in our students is Respect. Respect for self, Respect for others, Respect for our environment – both within the school and the wider community. We do our best to develop our school environment to be a pleasant and welcoming place to be. It saddens and frustrates me that a very small proportion of our school community feel it appropriate to graffiti and vandalise our school, in particular toilets. This week we were forced to limit the access to toilets during class time – there was still the ability for students to have access, but the freedom to access all toilets in the school during teaching times has been reduced. This is not an action that has been taken lightly, and as a parent I do not want to see students put in a difficult position. I would like to ask for your help. Firstly, can I ask caregivers to remind students that intervals and lunchtimes are there for them to use the toilets if needed. Taking time out of teaching and learning disrupts not only the student leaving, but also others in the room. When we reach NCEA our students have to focus and sit for 3 hours of assessment. It’s important that our students can learn to sit for one hour in classes without the need to head out of the room. Secondly, I value the respect and honesty that the vast majority of our students have in their interactions at RLHS. I have asked that if a student notices any sort of vandalism, graffiti or otherwise, can they please inform a staff member as soon as possible. If you can reinforce this message I would appreciate that. I would also like to state that I am aware some students have specific needs to be out of class at a given time, and this focus on staying in class and minimising disruption will not impinge on their ability to have their needs met. 1
We all want to maintain our school environment and I hope you agree with me that working with our students and community to minimise damage and graffiti will support this goal. My hope is that we can return to normal toilet availability in the near future and that the message will get through to the small number of misguided individuals who are ruining things for the majority. Frankly, it’s frustrating that these negative acts distract us all from the positive events that are happening on a day to day basis at Lakes. So, on a more positive note, on Monday we will have a Pink Ribbon Mufti Day to raise funds for Breast Cancer. Students wear your finest pink outfits and bring along a $2 donation. Thanks to Mrs Goodrick and our House Leaders for driving this event. I am also looking forward to Tuesday next week when we have our Term Awards Assembly. There have been so many positive events – sporting, academic and cultural that we want to recognise and I am looking forward to congratulating our students at that event. Thank you for your continuing support. Enjoy the weekend. ___________________________________________________________________________ YEAR 10 ART Year 10 have finished their skate decks and they look fabulous! The work is on display for a short time in the main reception area, and will then be sent home with the artists. All welcome to come in and view. Fantastic effort by the year 10 art class SPORT ___________________________________________________________________________ GIRLS FOOTBALL On Wed 19 our girls football team kicked off their season (pardon the pun!) against a very well drilled and coached JPC team at JPC. The final score was 9-0 but only 0-3 at half time – a superb effort. The girls got tired and are working on their fitness. JPC beat us 17-0 last year so this was a huge improvement considering we had three new players. The JPC coach said we made their team run all over the place and our skills were really good. Well done to our girls. ___________________________________________________________________________ BOYS 1ST XI HOCKEY A mild night in Rotorua saw us playing against Whaka from Taupo. A quick goal in the first minute by Lakes set the scene for most of the game. The boys played well, with good bursts of power throughout the game seeing another 4 goals throughout the game. There were good opportunities to put into practice the skills being developed at training. A convincing win of 5-0 with goals by Tama Te Whau (2), Jayden Fraser, Dylan Fouracre and Ethan Hoggard. Player of the Day Tama Te Whau. 4
___________________________________________________________________________ BOYS 2ND XI HOCKEY The Boys 2nd XI travelled to Whakatane and met a well drilled Whakatane High School Side who took out the match with an 8-0 scoreline. Our boys played well in parts but struggled to link up with their passing at times and allowed Whakatane too much time in the circle and they punished us with some slick passing and good positional play. Our player of the day was Josh Tawhara, who worked hard all night long and showed good positional play. The boys are looking to their first home game next week in Rotorua against Boys High 3rd XI. ___________________________________________________________________________ GIRLS RUGBY GRADING DAY – FANTASTIC DAY OUT On Monday this week our girls rugby team travelled to Paengaroa to play their first games of rugby for the season. For some, this was their first ever game! Fantastic day out with tremendous support from our players whānau who travelled as far as Opotiki to support their moko ___________________________________________________________________________ BRILLIANT BASKETBALL SESSION We had a great skill session with Bruce Boyce from Evolution Basketball NZ on Saturday 15 May. It was a very successful day for our Junior and Senior Boys. Our boys benefited hugely from Bruce’s vast experience in coaching basketball. Thanks so much to Bruce and we hope to organise this again. ___________________________________________________________________________ BOYS RUGBY Rotorua Lakes high school under 14‘s rugby team played on Saturday the 15th at home against JPC. This was our first home game of the season and it was great to see the local community come out with staff and students supporting. The team are still finding their feet learning how to work with each other. The team is gaining more confidence each week. Player numbers have been increasing weekly with the boys participating having great attitudes and a willingness to learn. JPC started of the game well, getting up early to a few tries. Being down at half time it was time to reassess the situation, have a good talk and a new plan and direction. The second half effort and commitment were outstanding from the boys just falling short by one try to finish the game. Final score JPC 35 – Rotorua Lakes high school 27. 5
