How teachers could mitigate for this? ▪ Kneel down and explain a concept to a student ▪ Ask students to hold up books or mini whiteboards ▪ Sit next to and scaffold a task for a student ▪ Make use of visualisers and webcams ▪ Look over a students’ shoulder to see how they are ▪ Consider remote opportunities and alternatives doing ▪ Use Google Classroom ▪ Ask different students to move to help each other, ▪ Carefully plan their seating for each class share their work or peer assess ▪ Refine and clarify instruction – reflect verbal ▪ Help a student with a practical task instruction of task/teaching points on the board ▪ As a student to bring their work to you ▪ Prepare and plan carefully considering the needs of ▪ Give out resources which would mean circulating individual students ▪ Explain written feedback in a 1:1 situation in the ▪ Establish routines for collecting resources on entry lesson and exit ▪ Ensure feedback in books is clear and legible
And so, for 2020-21 and beyond We remain fiercely ambitious for all of our students. Header What are we working towards?
Header This half term we need to support and build up our students…
Header A continual reminder…
Header Journey to success…
Header The Rosebery Way 1. All members of our community are shown the level of respect and kindness that we would expect for a member of our family. 2. High expectations are never set by creating a fear of failure; they are set by demonstrating belief in each other’s ability to achieve. 3. Members of our community who do not meet our expectations are supported to help them to do so. 4. We never ask anyone to do anything that we would not be prepared to do ourselves. 5. We act with integrity by doing the right thing whether or not anyone is watching.

English Two separate qualifications, each Changes to the 2021 exams -what we know: • The language exams will not change with 2 exams in summer 2021. • In literature students will only have to answer questions on 3 out of the 4 content areas we teach – more on this No coursework or controlled in a moment • Our students are in an excellent position for their final assessments. exams – they worked hard over the lockdown period, they have come back with exceptional focus and they have already covered the majority of the course No tiers – all students sit the same content. This allows us to make informed choices about papers where grades 1-9 are available the exams to maximise their chances
Course content: Literature Students are required to answer questions on a Shakespeare text and the poetry (both anthology and unseen) - luckily our previous results show that our students do the best on these sections. We must also choose one other section from either the 19th century novel or the modern text (An Inspector Calls). We will use the data from the November mocks to support us in selecting the text option that we feel gives students the best possible chance for success. Once this decision has been made, we will ensure that this is communicated with our students and with you.
Course content: Language Speaking and listening will be reported as a separate grade. This does not count towards the qualification but must be completed as a requirement.
How will they be assessed? Convincing, critical, perceptive Thoughtful, developed Clear understanding Explained Relevant Simple
How can parents help? What can you tell me about the plot/theme/character/style of the text? Promote resilience: effortful learning is more How do you know? likely to ‘stick’ What else can you link this to? Can you tell me even more about this? Encourage regular independent reading of both fiction and Practise recall: remembering deepens learning. Quiz non-fiction them on quotations/key ideas/vocabulary
English Lit at Home… • How you can help us to help them at home: • Revisit ‘little and often’ eg add a quotation or to the lock screen on their phone, 20 minute revision tasks – they could start this with their 19th Century novel in preparation for their mocks in December • Mixed practice e.g. revising a topic from last week, last month, last term, last year • Make new connections eg linking themes and characters in new ways, using mind- mapping • Recalling at speed eg being quizzed by a classmate, using a knowledge organiser • Use things that are easily remembered e.g. turning notes into song lyrics or images
The Department Revision Guide • Each task is designed to take 20-30 minutes. • Choose 2-3 tasks in a one hour revision slot. • Aim for the highest level of challenge you can and choose tasks from different texts to allow for spaced practice. • The support section is designed to boost your core knowledge of the text, best for when you are just starting revision of a text. • Develop encourages a more analytical focus on the text. • Stretch is designed to help you work towards the upper grades by creating a critical, exploratory response to texts.
You can’t revise for English Language? ‘Studies have measured readers’ tolerance of unfamiliar vocabulary, and have estimated that readers need to know about 98 per cent of the words for comfortable comprehension.’ Daniel Willingham • Word of the day app • Creating vocabulary banks for common topics to write about (the weather, a re-usable character, settings, topical issues) • Weekly reading – short stories (try the BBC young critics award audiobooks online), engaging non-fiction articles (I recommend Dolly Alderton, Caitlin Moran and Charlie Brooker) • Keeping up to date with topical issues and ‘big ideas’ and discussing their opinions on them • Using the department revision booklet

One last thing...
Miss Starr Head of Science
Header Science in Year 11 • 11XSR / 11XSO / 11YSR / 11YSO are all currently studying Separate Science • 11XCE / 11XCS / 11YCE / 11YCS are all currently studying Combined Science Higher • 11XCB and 11YCB are all currently studying Combined Science Foundation
GCSE Combined Science – Trilogy ● Exams are each 75 minutes ● Higher offers grades from 9-9 to 4-4 ● Foundation offers grades from 5-5 to 1-1
AQA Separate Sciences ● Exams are each 105 minutes ● Offers grades from 9-9 to 4-4 ● Extra higher level content in each Science covered
Separate Science • Due to the challenging nature of the separate science course it is important that this is suitable for the students following this pathway. • The pace of the work in lessons is quicker and there will be more content to revise in preparation. • The mocks will be used to give an indication to us of suitability to follow the separate science course. As a guide we would expect students on this course to be usually achieving a grade 6+ in the paper 1 mocks. • Any concerns following the results will be raised with both the student and yourselves.
Mocks and Homework • The first set of mocks will cover paper 1 content only. • Each week leading up to the mocks students are being set a specific revision task to complete in order to prepare them for this (set through Google Classroom). • Extra support and revision materials are available on the Science Google Site.
