ISSUE 2 | 13 MARCH 2019 Faction Swimming Carnival NEWSLETTER On Friday 8 March students from Years 4, 5 and 6 went to the South West Sports Centre to participate in the Faction Swimming Carnival. The day began in the pool with students competing in either 50m or 25m events across 4 strokes (freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly). It was encouraging to see not only the amazing performances of individuals but also the determination and resilience shown by students giving the swimming events a go for the first time. After a short lunch break it was out onto the lawn and on the pool slide for a series of novelties aimed at fun and cooperation. The students spent 2 hours rotating through 9 activities, getting soaked and having a lot of fun. I know I slept well after the day and I hope the students did too. We now turn our attention to the Interschool Carnival to be held on the 22 March again at the South West Sports Centre. What’s been happening in Japanese ? JAPANESE CALLIGRAPHY – SHODO – 書道 It’s been a busy couple of weeks in Japanese. Students have been learning how to write their name in the Japanese script Katakana. After much writing practise, students were shown how to write their name in traditional Japanese calligraphy called Shodo 書道. Some students showed some definite natural talent here. The art of Shodo originated in China and was introduced to Japan in the sixth or seventh century. These days Shodo is an art form and practised by primary school students from an early age. To be a true Shodo master takes many, many years of practise. OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program .Adam Road OSHClub: Before and After School Care Program Update What’s New? Come in and meet Bettie & Taco! We have 2 lovely goldfish at OSHClub named Bettie (the white goldfish) and Taco (the black goldfish). They arrived on Friday last week and while feeding them we noticed Taco swam past all the food and we realised he is actually blind. Taco is very self-sufficient; he finds the food at the bottom of the tank on the rocks. Bettie is a little cheeky and loves to chase after Taco. Over the next few weeks we will be discussing and learning about people who are blind and what some people use in their daily lives such as guide dogs and braille.
