9th to 15th May 2021 Rogation Sunday Welcome A very warm welcome to Bolton Priory. We are a Christian community in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park who welcomes everyone and celebrates human diversity. Who we are Bolton Priory is an Anglican Church, within the Diocese of Leeds, where there has been continuous worship since 1154. When the Priory was dissolved in 1539, permission was granted for the parish to continue worshipping in the nave which is now the Priory Church. The Reformation is a daily backdrop to our lives and, fittingly, worship is centred around the Book of Common Prayer 1662 which, in the Spirit of Pentecost, is used and understood across the world wide Anglican communion. Bolton Priory is committed, not only to reflecting the glory and majesty of God in its worship but proclaiming the Gospel particularly by seeking social justice and stewardship of God’s creation. On this fifth Sunday after Easter we are still in the period of Eastertide but on the verge of Christ’s Ascension into heaven which we celebrate on Thursday. Christ’s work on earth is done and it is time for him to return to his Father who is in heaven. Although Ascension is hard to comprehend, it is only logical that the Son of God who came down to earth in the incarnation should return to heaven at the end of his earthly life. It also reminds us all that heaven and earth co-exist at the same time and provides us with the comfort of knowing that, as Christ has told us, he has gone to prepare a place for us all in heaven. Almighty and eternal God, bless us as we celebrate Christ’s Ascension and direct our eyes heavenward where in human flesh, your only Son is with you; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Collect for Easter Rogation Sunday O LORD, from whom all good things do come: Grant to us thy humble servants, that by thy holy inspiration we may think those things that be good, and by thy merciful guiding may perform the same; through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. The Old Testament Reading: Joel 2. 21-26 KJV Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the LORD will do great things. Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their strength. Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month. And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpillar, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you. And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed. The Gospel: John 16:23-28 KJV “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God. I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.” Notices 2
Rector’s Message This Sunday is Rogation Sunday. This service was retained in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer to offer prayer “for God’s blessing upon the earth and Human Labour”. Those who wrote the Prayer Book over three hundred and fifty years ago, could never have foreseen the damage we would do to the environment through the use of fossil fuels. As a result, we live in a time of unprecedented danger and, unless we take urgent action, global warming will do untold damage to our lives and those who come after us. There is no plan B. At the same time, we need to remember human labour. The pandemic has reminded us all of the value of human labour, particularly those in many of the jobs we take for granted. May we seek to restore God’s earth and confer dignity on all who labour thereon. Ascension Day On Thursday we celebrate Ascension Day. As we cannot meet in Church there will be an online service at 6 pm to mark the occasion. We will also be meeting outside the Priory at 10 am for a short prayer meeting. You are all most welcome to join us. Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe Although it was wonderful news that Nazanin was recently released from jail she has not been allowed to leave the country as anticipated and has now received an additional sentence of imprisonment though she is currently at home. The Foreign Secretary has rightly described her treatment as torture and she is now being used as political pawn. Please keep Nazanin and her family in your prayers at this critical time. May Magazine The May Magazine is now available in Church on Sunday, from the Tower or on line. Do take a look there are many varied and interesting items for you to read. The Parish Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday 23rd May in Bolton Abbey Village Hall at 12.30 pm. To attend the APCM booking is essential as numbers are limited. A separate booking will also be required for the 10.30 am morning Church Service. If you wish to attend both the service and the APCM you will need to make two bookings. Art Exhibition in the Tower 23rd to 30th May Just inland from the Adriatic coast of Italy nestles the city of Ravenna, world famous for the incredible Byzantine mosaics that adorn many of its churches and sacred buildings. The beautiful mosaics in the Basilica of San Vitale are so inspirational that one of Britain’s most innovative artists Peter Swidrak has created a series of limited edition prints based on the emotional and spiritual impact his visit to the basilica made on him. You can see twenty pieces from the series entitled ‘In A Ravenna Courtyard’ exhibited in the Priory Tower from Sunday 23rd May to Sunday 30th May. A contribution for each piece sold will be made to the Priory Church of St Mary and St Cuthbert. Electoral Roll The Electoral Roll will close one week before the AGM so there is still time for you to put your name on it if you haven’t already done so. If you would like to do this, which also means you can be a member of the PCC and can vote at the AGM, please contact Rosemarie Fisher, fishers4000@aol.com or on 01943 607486. To apply you have to have been coming to Church, habitually, for six months. Money Counters Required All the money collected at the Priory has to be counted before it can be banked. This is usually done on a Monday morning in the church office photocopying room. Two counters have retired this year and it would be really good if we could replace them. This is done on a rota so at the most it would be once a month – or if you enjoy it so much we can always fit you in more often! Please contact Keith Simpson 01943 600969, kandas1rl@btinternet.com if you would like to give it a go. Wanted! Volunteer Guides at Bolton Priory Do you have any spare time? Bird Box and Hedgehog House Update On Wednesday 28th April three additional bird boxes plus two hedgehog houses were placed in the Priory graveyard by Peter Lambert, Gill Holme and myself. It was bitterly cold and blowing a gale but we persevered, taking turns in climbing the ladder to site the boxes. We then chose secluded places to site the hedgehog houses; compass in hand to ensure they were not facing north or northeast as we had been advised. This now gives us a total of seven bird boxes and two hedgehog houses. All of these will help us to complete the scheduled programme of work in support of our silver eco award. I would like to thank everyone who donated a box/hedgehog house. You can still do this if you contact Elaine. 368 - All my hope on God is founded All gifts, by thine appointment, All my hope on God is founded; In bread and cup are shown; He doth still my trust renew, One thing alone we bring not, Me through change and chance he guideth, The wilfulness of sin, Only good and only true. And all we bring is nothing God unknown, he alone Save that which is within. Calls my heart to be his own. Wherefore, though all unworthy God's great goodness aye endureth, To offer sacrifice, Deep his wisdom, passing thought: We pray that this our duty Splendour, light and life attend him, Be pleasing in thine eyes; Beauty springeth out of naught. For praise, and thanks and worship, Evermore from his store For mercy and for aid, Newborn worlds rise and adore. The Catholic oblation Still from man to God eternal Of Jesus Christ is made.
