08 — FA R M I N G / W O R K 2022 WRANGLING Q: Where does the story of Click Thompson begin? It’s a long and winding road. Most people know me as Chris Thompson. I was born in Japan, but both of my parents are THE WEST from Virginia and that’s where I grew up. Q: When did you first pick up a camera? In my sophomore year of high school, pho- tography was part of our art curriculum. We learned to shoot on film, which taught me a lot about the process. You had to know exac- WITH tly what you were doing because every shot counts. That’s where it all started, just shoot- CLICK THOMPSON ing people, whatever I could. Q: You’ve gone on the record saying you wake up with images in your head that are yet to be taken. Can you expand on that? One time I worked with a guy, and he would always say. “Put the camera where your eye can’t be.” While shooting rodeos, I realized that you don’t have as much access, so a lot of trying to capture unique or dynamic images is knowing where you can be and can’t be. Q: Did you grow up idolizing the Western Sports world? Or have you grown to love it Few people can capture the raw emotion of Western Sports like through your photography? Kind of both. I Christopher “Click” Thompson. We sat down to chat about his was really inspired by my grandfather. He was beginnings in photography, some stand-out moments, and what’s next. a hustler. He didn’t wear a cowboy hat or any- thing, but he had that same motivation, same kind of grind. I didn’t grow up riding horses or getting on bulls, I just fell in love with the “ACTION AND CHAOS ALWAYS KEEP ME FIRED UP. ” romance of it all. I was a fan first, then I found a way to take my skills and get involved. Q: You’ve gotten to photograph some big moments—like Chase Outlaw’s comeback. Can you tell me about that experience? Three months after he had gotten his whole face surgically reconstructed, he was able to qualify and compete in the PBR Finals which is a huge feat in itself. One year after his injury, I got asked to photograph “The Last Cowboy Standing,” which is one of the most physically demanding events of the year. To come back a year later to that event—that is probably one of the greatest mental feats in bull riding history, period! That was cool seeing him like that, and obviously he’s grown as a person after that wreck. Q: What keeps you going in the photogra- phy world? There’s more photos to capture, more places to go. I want to leave a legacy and be remembered. I’ve traveled to places I’ve never thought I’d ever go to. So to continue to get those opportunities and create those kinds of images is pretty, pretty awesome. To see more of Click’s work, head over to his website. clickthompson.com
