CONNECTION & Picture it. A wintry February day. You’re wrapped so tightly in your weighted blanket that you can barely move. In your hands you hold a mug of hot COMMUNITY: - scratch that - lukewarm coffee that needs to be reheated. And when you’re not sipping a cup of subpar Joe, your hands are clenched around your A HAMILTON phone. It’s your one connection to the outside world, given that the gray skies outside seem to be keeping everyone close to home. TRADITION Lucky for us Hamiltonians, Winterfest is the perfect antidote to the wintertime blues. by Natasha Think of it like a chance to connect over hot cocoa, Szostak not WiFi. In fact, connection has always been at the heart of Winterfest. For veteran presenter Karen Marcoux of the Gourley Park Community Association, Winterfest was originally an opportunity to create some wintertime fun for her children. Four decades later, she continues to keep the traditions of Winterfest alive. “Over the years I have met and worked with other community volunteers from all over the City, and made some friends and learned what was happening throughout Hamilton,” says Karen. Lori Le Mare, Artistic Director and Founder of Hamilton Aerial Group (HAG) is amazed by the turnout at her Winterfest performances. Despite being held on one of the coldest nights of the year, an astonishing 600 people attended HAG’s Valentine’s Day show back in 2015. “I believe that was because we were part of Winterfest,” she says. When it’s easier to beat the chilly weather by, well, chilling out at home, Winterfest reminds us that nothing warms the heart like a meaningful connection. “It heartens me to see so many people come out to events at the coldest time of the year,” says Lori. “It shows how much we need connection to each other and our community and how isolating the alternative is.” Connection and community. That’s what Winterfest is all about, Hamilton.

Hamilton Flea presents a winter market in celebration of Hamilton Winterfest! Known for curating the most unique vendors in truly unique spaces, Hamilton Flea has popped up everywhere from an old tire factory, to a lumberyard, to a night-time market on the lawns of Dundurn Castle! Started in 2013 by sisters Whitney McMeekin (girl on the wing) and Erika McMeekin (The Academy of All Things Awesome), the goal for Hamilton Flea was to create events that celebrate the creative community in Hamilton- while popping up in buildings that one may not get to interact with on a regular basis. The very first event was held at the historic Treble Hall in 2013 and helped to shine light on such an important part of Hamilton’s architectural and cultural past. The most recent event was in the summer of 2018, in collaboration with the Arkells and was part of their biggest show to date, The Rally, at Tim Hortons Field. For this year’s Winterfest, Hamilton Flea is excited to create a cozy indoor escape from the winter blues at the Hamilton Waterfront Trust. The event will feature over 20 vendors- from independent artists, to makers to vintage collectors all selling their wares. It will also feature a dedicated kids zone with crafts and activities, film screenings, a DJ spinning tunes, warm snacks and drinks, and an all-around good time! Admission is $2 and the event will run from 11am-4pm. Stay tuned to @hamiltonflea for updates on vendors, films, activities, and more. 13 H A M I LT O N W I N T E R F E S T 2 0 2 0
