SCHÁYILHEN (SALMON GOING UP RIVER) Drawing meaning from the salmon’s journey to their spawning grounds, 2018’s Talking Stick Festival is aptly named Scháyilhen (S-ch-eye-yay- lh-un), which translates literally to “ Salmon Going Up River “; and speaks to the journey the community is taking towards embracing and celebrating Indigenous art forms and practices 4
SCHÁYILHEN VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION Curated by Richard Heikkilä-Sawan “Salmon Going Up River” (Scháyilhen) Within a climate of reconciliation, the immediately invokes a sense of urgency, metaphor of “Salmon Going Up River” of struggle, of passion. Map of the Land, Map of the Stars tells the story of how the spirits used to know the map of the stars. but have since lost their way. Can they find the trail home? MATINEE SCREENINGS COLONIZATION ROAD Directed by Michelle St.John Anishinaabe comedian and activist Ryan McMahon takes us on a journey through Ontario. C̓ ƏSNAʔƏM: THE CITY BEFORE THE CITY Directed by Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers In late 2011, the Musqueam First Nation learned that a 108-unit condo development was planned at one of their ancestral village sites dating back over 4,000 years, and that ancestral remains were unearthed during an archaeological “investigation”. In response, the Musqueam community held a round-the–clock vigil at the site for over 200 days at the site commonly known as Eburne Midden-while Musqueam, the City of Vancouver, the BC provincial government and the condo developers struggled to find resolution. This is their story (75 mins) NO RESERVATIONS Directed by Trevor Carroll Social commentary inspired by true-life events, giving a hypothetical look at what life would be like if the roles in Standing Rock were reversed. Protests erupt as an upper-middle class Caucasian neighborhood attempts to thwart the construction of a pipeline from an Indigenous Corporation. Starring Lorne Cardinal as Joseph Stillwater, No Reservations aims to provide an alternative point of view of the political threads that have become so tense after the events in North Dakota. Bravely challenging its viewer from the perspective of both First Nations and Caucasian. (11 mins) REEL INDIGENUITY! Presented by Telus, supported by Vancity, Vantel Safeway and Metro Vancouver Reel IndiGenuity! Is a Mentorship Program which pairs Indigenous youth with established filmmakers to create short films capturing both image and sound using only an iPhone and Snapchat. Made over a 2-3 day period during the height of the festival, these new and innovative short films (1-2 minutes in length) promise to be exciting, dynamic, surprising, and innovative! Elder Lena Wandering Spirit recounts her time at Holy Angels, her story taking us on a healing journey that echoes in the dance of Phoenix, a young girl who is the same age now that Lena was during her captivity. Their lives bridge the distance of time and affirm the power that lies within us. (13 mins) BIRTH OF A FAMILY Directed by Tasha Hubbard Removed from their young Dene mother’s care as part of Canada’s infamous Sixties Scoop, three sisters and a brother, adopted as infants into separate families across North America, meet together for the first time in this deeply moving documentary. As the four siblings piece together their shared history, their connection deepens, bringing laughter with it, and their family begins to take shape. Directed by Chris McGregor “When you take something from the earth, you must give something back.” Th’owxiya: The Hungry Feast Dish, tells the story of Th’owxiya, whose mouth holds the most delicious foods, but if you steal from her, she’ll eat you and your family. A young mouse has made that mistake, but with the help of two young bears, Raven, and Sasquatch, the creature takes a journey to earn her forgiveness. Recommended for Grades K-6.
