ABOUT KALOPSIA THE MUSICAL K alopsia the Musical tells the story of Byrd, a young Black man who is unknowingly sent on a journey to get his mind right! With his job in jeopardy, his relationship falling apart, and trauma from his past knocking on his door, Byrd does what he knows best. He escapes to the fantasy world in his mind where he’s the boss and star of his own show. As reality closes in, Byrd realizes Kalopsia may lead him down a path of no return. Full of wild characters, whimsi- cal musical numbers and a finger on the pulse of mental health in the Black community, Kalopsia is the musical comedy that will get your mind dancing to the beat of your heart. This musical is a love letter to my generation who is enamored with thinking about yesterday while fearing the thought of tomorrow. We dissect our childhoods and turn them into hilarious memes and skits trying to understand how we all grew up with the same experiences. Our commonalities are sometimes our scars but if there’s one thing we’ve learned from the generations before us it is how to laugh. So, I offer this dose of medicine for us to laugh and love our way to healing.” — MONTEZE FREELAND NHT 21/22

ARTIST STATEMENTS I’ve always held a desire to tell the stories of people that the world seems to ignore. Those people tend to look like me and maybe you. Their stories are rich, complex, tragic, funny as hell and deserve to be seen in this traditional American form. So, five years ago when a few friends asked me why I hadn’t submitted for the New Hazlett’s CSA Performance Series I didn’t really have an answer but I did have an idea for a show. And, like a chime in a musical, just days later I found the word “Kalopsia” on Instagram along with its definition; the delusion of things being more beautiful than they are. And I found it when life was slowly depleting me of my optimism. At the time of our first workshop, discussing the mental wellness of the Black community was nearly unheard of in mainstream entertainment. And in real life, there was even more of a generational battle as many of my millennial friends began dabbling in taking their healing into their own hands through therapy, healing stones, astrology, numerologists, tarot card readings, and many more. Today, that conversation is much more mainstream due in part with the work of Iyanla Vanzant’s reality show Iyanla: Fix My Life, the Pulitzer Prize winning musical A Strange Loop, Taraji P. Henson’s Foundation built to eradicate the stigma, Jenifer Lewis’ detailing of her Bipolar disorder in hew memoir, and rappers like Kendrick Lamar speaking out about their depression and anxiety. Even radio host Charlamagne The God has built an empire on his lessons from therapy. And not to mention Kanye. Now we can heal in public view, inspiring the next generation to give it a try. Many will think Kalopsia is a play by play of my life’s story. Well, some of it is true and some is fantasy. As an artist, and specifically a playwright, it is my prerogative to tell my business but it is not my place to tell the business of others. So the family dynamic you see is the essence of my exuberant relatives but this is not their story. Kalopsia, I believe, tells the journey of many through the lens of my personal landmarks and lessons as guides. I am eternally grateful to this brave cast, creative team, and the New Hazlett Theater for taking on this production while still in the storm of a pandemic. Singing and dancing in masks at the tail end of the summer is no easy task! I am forever grateful. And thank you for taking a moment to return to live theater, giving us a chance to play and learn as we grow as artists in this new way of living. – MONTEZE FREELAND, PLAYWRIGHT My involvement with Kalopsia began back in the fall of 2016. I had just graduated from college and had returned to Pennsylvania after a summer stock gig that resulted in being paid with a check that would later bounce. A good friend of mine was serving as sound designer for the CSA series and his project was a musical in need of a composer. I accepted and was quickly introduced to Monteze. We worked that whole year and ended up putting the first version of Kalopsia onstage ourselves. Shout out to Dominique, Cheryl, Victor, and Sam for continuing with this piece. It was such a wonderful and memorable first experience writing that I ended up applying for the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU. Getting in meant that I would have to leave Pennsylvania, but it was worth it. I learned so much and I hope that growth is evident to the folks who saw that first staging. NHT 21/22
It was very interesting coming back to Kalopsia after grad school and writing several other things. A lot of it was surprisingly good and effective. Some of it made me think “why on earth did I think this music worked?” My approach since the beginning has been to make this show sound less like any contemporary musical and bring in a collection of styles and sounds that are personal to Monteze and me. I feel we have succeeded. You’ll be able to hear strains of the Motown and funk that my mother introduced me to as a child. I also was able to bring a facsimile of gospel music that is a little closer than what we get in musicals. I have to thank Dr. Randy Tillmutt for giving me the chance to study gospel under him. My hope is that you leave with a hummable tune as well as a want to explore some music that you may not have been exposed to before. I know as a theatergoer that I am grateful for every opportunity to “drink from the fountain” so I ask that you take a moment to really dwell on how precious a gift it is for us to come here and see a show. I’m forever grateful for Monteze and our collaboration. I’m also grateful for the care that Kristen has furnished for us. I’m thankful for such a wonderful creative team and cast, who has shaped this piece and made it work under extraordinary circumstances. I owe my music team everything for rolling with every punch. I must shout out Jarrett Murray who joins us from Connecticut. I’m thankful for my parents for their endless support and love. I’m thankful for Sarah who is far more understanding and kind than she needs to be. I love you all. – MICHEAL MEKETA III, COMPOSER KALOPSIA THE MUSICAL HAS BEEN CREATED WITH THE GENEROUS SUPPORT OF Staunton Farm Foundation The Fine Foundation The Sheila Reicher Fine Foundation Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh, a grantmaking program of The Pittsburgh Foundation The Heinz Endowments SPECIAL THANKS Dr. Veronica Morgan- Lee, Joanna Obuzor, Hope Anthony, Randyn Fullard, Mark Clayton Southers, Steel Smiling, Julius Boatwright, Cornelius Holmes, Bekezela Mguni, Nik Nemec, and Lovell McFadden
