HAPPENINGS FROM THE CHAIR A Publication of Len Gregory Seacrest Village Chair, Board of Trustees Retirement Communities Seacrest Village Retirement Communities WINTER/SPRING 2016 Len Gregory Chair Hildegarde Beyor Vice Chair This month I will be getting my Medicare Card. There is nothing particularly remarkable about that other than the astonishing speed at which I arrived at this age. The notable Jonathan Halberg Vice Chair thing is how much company I have in reaching sixty-five. From January, 2011 to January, 2030 over 10,000 Baby Boomers a day will retire. Currently there are approximately 44 Jeffrey Platt Treasurer million Americans 65 and older. That will double by 2050. David Gilbert That creates lots of challenges and opportunities. Secretary The greatest challenge revolves around the fact that my generation, wanting to live life to Devin Chodorow President, Guardians of San Diego its fullest, by and large didn’t do a very good job saving for retirement. It didn’t help that the defined benefit plans that many of our parents had disappeared and we were left with Mary Epsten President, Women’s Auxiliary rather slim 401k accounts. Add to that we are living longer. In this country at the age of 65, men can anticipate living another 18 years, and women another 20. Clearly we are going to Pam Ferris be financially squeezed as the years go by. President/CEO The Melvin Garb Foundation At Seacrest Village we have a terrific model offering four levels of care: independent living, Presidential Chair assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing. While outstanding in its current form it is Robin P. Israel, MPA also limited in how many seniors it can physically serve with its two campuses in Encinitas Chief Foundation Officer, Seacrest Foundation and Poway. Arthur & Sophie Brody Philanthropy Chair Our great opportunity in the future will be not only to continue offering the housing and healthcare services we currently do but at the same time developing new options for Bradley A. Blose, CPA Vice President the tremendous number of people that will want our help. The Baby Boomers fancied Alan Wexler Finance Chair communal living in their teens and twenties. Perhaps we will help them return to such Kathy Sanger, PHR forms of living in their senior years. Boomers, like so many others, also largely want to Vice President of Human Resources remain in their homes. Through technology and an array of services, we will find ways to help them do so. Carolyn Brooking Director of Philanthropy/Editor Along with other advancements, I am pleased and proud to announce a new strategic Melanie Hoff plan with Seacrest Foundation. As you will read on page 3, I join Sylvia Geffen in the Senior Donor Services Advisor announcement of our future work together and the appointment of Robin Israel as Chief Shona Borevitz Foundation Officer. Foundation Events Manager Now that I have “arrived” I no longer consider aging an abstract concept. I am energized to Jon Schwartz Director of Community Relations be a part of Seacrest Village where we are conducting a “Visioning Process” to determine what the San Diego Hebrew Homes can be for our community in the future. I look forward kingdesign+marketing Design & Production to sharing the results of our process in a few months. • Warm regards, OUR MISSION Seacrest Village Retirement Communities provides services to seniors in a Jewish environment that promotes community, independence and innovation. 1 l

The Women’s Auxiliary of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities held its 38th Annual Gala, “Silver Screen” at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla on Saturday, February 27th with Esther Fischer and Linda Platt serving as Gala Co-Chairs. The event was attended by 350 guests and raised over $450,000 to be used for the provision of charitable care for those residents who, many due to illness or injury, have exhausted their financial resources and have nowhere else to turn for housing and healthcare. Funds raised will also be invested in a special project: Seacrest Village TV (SVTV). SVTV will be a dedicated TV Channel that will allow every resident on the Encinitas and Rancho Bernardo campuses, regardless of physical ability, to participate in services in the synagogue, enjoy live music and theater being performed on campus, and feel the warmth and connection of these events. SVTV will help end feelings of isolation sometimes felt by residents with restricted mobility. Guests received a red carpet greeting, complete with the flashing cameras of Hollywood paparazzi, movie premier searchlights, and flowing champagne as they entered “Silver Screen” where they dined and danced the night away. It was truly an evening to remember filled with friends, fine food and funds raised dedicated to the residents at Seacrest Village Retirement Communities. • 9 l
