The Ashmolean is the University of Oxford’s museum of art and archaeology, opened in 1683. SPECIAL EXHIBITION MEMBERS GET IN FREE LAST SUPPER IN POMPEII Until 12 Jan 2020 Located in the sunny paradise of southern Italy, Pompeii was sandwiched between lush vineyards and fertile plains to one side, and the bountiful waters of the Bay of Naples to the other. When the ash from Mount Vesuvius began raining down on Pompeii in AD 79, people were engaged in typical day to day activities: producing, buying and selling food and, most importantly, eating and drinking. See over 400 rare objects, including fine masterpieces of Roman art which range from the luxury furnishings of Roman dining rooms to the carbonised food that was on the table when the volcano erupted. Everything from the exquisite mosaics and frescoes in the villas of the wealthy to the remains found in kitchen drains, show what the Pompeians loved to eat and drink. Penck: I Think in Pictures 25 Oct 2019–19 Apr 2020 Until 3 Nov 2019 Gallery 11 Gallery 8 Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang (b. 1957) is best-known A.R. Penck (1939–2017) is an internationally for his gunpowder explosion events staged in public acclaimed German artist recognised for his work spaces worldwide and, in particular, for his firework in painting, drawing, print and sculpture. Abiding display for the opening ceremonies of the 2008 interests in systems theory and cybernetics, as well as Olympic Games in Beijing. This exhibition focuses pre-historic cultures and science fiction, guided his art on the artist’s smaller-scale works, exploring the toward an investigation of the relationships between presence of Chinese culture in his art through the man and society. Feed The World: Food and Money in the 20th Century Until 1 Mar 2020 Gallery 7 This display explores the complex relationship between food and money by taking a closer look at the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s ‘Food for All’ programme.
