Report from Henning Drive, January 30th, 2019 | www.burnabyteachers.com 3 WET’SUWET’EN SUPPORT At the last executive meeting, the following Social Justice and Indigenous Com- mittee motions were carried in support of the Wet'suwet'en: MOTION: Mary Hotomanie / James Sanyshyn 1. That the BTA support motions at the BCTF Winter RA which are in support for the Wet’suwet’en and Unisto’et’en. 2. That the BTA donate $500 to the Unisto’ot’en legal fund and $500 to the Gidimt’en legal fund. 3. The BTA demand government halt this project until standards of free, prior and informed consent under the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous people are met. Supporting Statement: Since the release of the TRC commission’s 94 Calls to Action, Burnaby Teachers have been engaged in the work of bringing reconciliation to the classrooms. Included in the work of brining recognition of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People. It is concerning to see RCMP officers forcibly remove Wet’suwet’en families and supporters from their unceded territory to make way for a fracked gas pipeline. Respect to the TRC’s Calls to Action includes compliance with UNIDRIP. All five clans of the Wet’suwet’en have unanimously opposed the development of pipe- lines through their traditional territories.
