DIRECTOR’S CHAIR Dear Friends, As I reflect on this past year, it brings a smile to my face. Although we have had to deal with this dreaded pandemic for another year, things at Winding Trails were very close to the way they were before we ever heard the dreaded COVID word. We were able to reopen the basketball courts, playground, and rent our sailboats. We were also able to remove the unsightly fence around the beach and stop limiting capacity on the beach. We were able to offer all our programs and attendance was through the roof. In short, it has really been a good year for Winding Trails, and we hope all of you have found value and enjoyment in your membership. Heading into winter, we are hopeful we can repeat last year’s snowfall and cold temperatures. This made for some of the best skiing we have seen in 10 years. We had 33 days of skiing supplemented with plenty of snowshoeing, sledding, and some skating. We have made some improvements to our winter programming this year. The first item is the purchase of a new Bobcat Toolcat that will be altered with tracks and used as our new trail groomer. This machine will allow us to groom faster and better. We have also replaced the pavilion between Garmany Hall and the Lodge this fall. This pavilion is used by our first-grade campers and numerous group outings. The new pavilion will match the pavilions on the eastern side of the hall and be much bigger. Under this pavilion we will build a 36’ x 60’ skating rink. This rink will freeze much quicker than the pond providing us with a longer skating season. This rink will be for lesson and free skate only, sorry no hockey. This biggest improvement for next year will be the much anticipated new playground at Dunning Lake. The current 30-year-old playscape will be removed by the end of December and the new one is scheduled to be installed in the spring. This project continues our commitment to the 10 Year Dunning Lake Master Plan. We would like to thank everyone who has made a donation, participated in one of our fundraising events, or bought a playground T-Shirt to help make this project a reality. We are about ¾ the way to our $100,000 goal so if you are looking for a good cause to support around the end of the year, please visit our website and make a donation. This newsletter is full of interesting articles and some wonderful programs. The most important piece to keep in mind is that it is renewal time. Please remember to renew your membership by December 31st. Our membership fills each year. There is a record waitlist of over 1700 families looking to join. If we don’t hear from you, we assume you are giving up your membership and we will offer your spot to someone on the waitlist. Once the quota for the year is met, we do not take any more members. As we move to the holiday season, we want to thank all of you for your support this year and hope for a healthy, safe, and COVID-free New Year. If you ever have any questions, suggestions, or concerns please contact me at scott@windingtrails.org or call (860) 677-8458 x 18.. Sincerely Scott Brown, CPRP Executive Director 2 WINTER NEWSLETTER

Exactly how the work was new pavilions are rated for all the latest wind and snow loads and are arguably more attractive looking with higher ceilings and let in more natural light. They also have no eves that attract bird nesting and bat sleeping quarters, which results in less maintenance. The pavilion is to the left of Garmany Hall and serves summer camp’s first graders. It is also the most popular rental pavilion with our group outing program. We have taken this opportunity to enlarge this pavilion from its original size of 24' x 50' to 36' x 60'. This pavil- ion will also see winter use as we have plans to build a seasonal skating rink under it. With an ice depth of just 3 inches, we are more likely to get this to freeze much sooner than our natural skating area on Walton Pond. It will be perfect for our popular “Learn to Skate” program and young skating enthusiasts. We are sorry to say our hockey players are going to have to wait for Walton Pond to safely freeze, this new rink is not big enough to safely play hockey. 6 WINTER NEWSLETTER
