Overdose is now the leading injury-related death in people age 25-64, outpacing motor vehicle
accidents for the first time. Previously, the number of prescriptions for opioid medications
quadrupled between 1999 and 2010. This startling statistic was paralleled by a quadruple
increase in the number of overdose deaths. Since 2010, although prescriptions for opioids have
dropped dramatically (due to government oversight of physicians); there has been a continued
meteoric rise in overdose deaths. What can to be done to reverse this trend and improve our
efforts to manage this crises.
