REMINDER: THERE IS NO IN-PERSON WORSHIP ON JUNE 27, 2021 Please see the C.C.P. Schedule of Events section for more information From the Pastor's Pen Maybe some of you have noticed, Poetry is one of my things. Personally, I’ve been writing poetry since high school. I love to read poetry, seeing it a wonderful practice for the soul. And I even incorporate it into my work as a pastor. Poetry in many ways resembles parables, which was Jesus’ primary vehicle for teaching. In fact, in many ways parables are what are called narrative poems. Both poetry and parables move us past the discursive brain. The intellect won’t help us understand a poem or a parable. If we overthink them, a poem or parable’s truth will pass us by. It is better to sit with a poem or a parable than it is to study them like a mathematician. Here is something else related to the poem. The one who loved to teach in parables, in John 1 is declared to be The Word. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… and the Word became flesh and dwelled among us.” What this tells me is that Christ is a one-word poem gifted to us and to the world. Lastly, I share a bible verse that incorporates the very word poem. Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.” The Greek word in that first phrase, is poiema. Looks familiar? That’s because it is. From poiema we get poem.
So, for those who say, they don’t like poetry… well, maybe you do. For we are each God’s poems. Do you get that? We are each God’s living, breathing poems. And we are created as such to touch the world and make it better. I end this column, of course, by including a poem, one from a poet who stands among the greatest and humblest. C.C.P.
