Tikanga on Marae There are no restrictions on gatherings at marae at Alert Level 1 however, many have new procedures and protocols in place to ensure the health and wellbeing of their visitors. At all marae, visitors must register with the COVID-19 app when they arrive and of course wash their hands before entering the whare kai. To create a QR Code for your marae function, church or business please visit this website go to qrform.tracing.covid19.govt.nz. The QR code helps you keep your whānau safe by allowing an easy way to contact trace. Marae visitors are also encouraged to skip harirū and hongi, instead greeting others with the ‘Kahungunu wave’ (raising of the eyebrows) or bumping of the elbows. Watch a video on tikanga at Waipatu Marae – or even better share it on Facebook! Click here to watch the video on the Hawke’s Bay DHB Facebook It’s important to stay vigilant, even at Alert Level 1. Kia mataara tātou. If whanau and ‘āiga have cold or flu symptoms, contact your family doctor, Māori health provider or freephone Healthline on 0800 358 5453 or 0800 611 116 to get tested for COVID-19.
Do not go to any gatherings at marae or church services if you • have COVID-19 symptoms, or • if you need to be in isolation for any reason. Even though COVID-19 remains a focus, it’s important to look after your general health and wellbeing, including being screened for disease. Bowel Screening Programme The bowel screening programme has resumed in Hawke's Bay after being paused for COVID. From this week testing kits will start to be sent out to people, inviting people to participate in the screening programme. It’s important people take-up the offer as the disease kills over 1,200 people in New Zealand every year. Screening for people aged 60-74 years of age is free, as are any follow-up tests or treatment. Testing is done at home using a bowel screening test kit received through the mail. The kit is quick, easy and simple to do by yourself at home and is returned by post. The DHB is very grateful to Tito, a bowel cancer survivor, who has told his story of how the Hawke’s Bay screening programme saved his life. You can watch his story here: bit.ly/bowelscreeninghawkesbay Breast Screening Programme Mobile breast screening involves taking an x-ray (mammogram) of your breasts which can help pick up very small breast cancers early, well before a lump can be felt, meaning there is a very good chance of successful treatment. If you’re aged between 45 and 69, please take advantage of getting your free mammogram by calling 0800 270 200 to book an appointment while the mobile screening unit is in Flaxmere at the Cook Island Centre until this Thursday, 1 October. If you are unable to book an appointment this week, you can still call 0800 270 200 and a suitable time and place for a screening appointment can be arranged for you. Ngā rāhuitanga o te hohipera – Current restrictions at the hospital and DHB health centres Hawke’s Bay DHB has relaxed its visitor policy under Alert Level 1 with normal visiting resuming at all facilities. However, visitors are still encouraged to take responsibility for their health and wellbeing by wearing a mask, ‘checking in’ using the COVID-19 app QR code at entrances, washing their hands and following staff instructions on mask use. If you are not well please stay at home and phone your GP or Heathline on 0800 358 5453 for advice. If you have any questions about the visitor policy, you can check it out online at www.ourhealthhb.nz or phone the DHB’s call centre on 06 878 8109.
