Teaching the world about renewable energy Meeting standards Renewable energy is gaining traction as a viable option in the United States. Yet Energy and renewable energy many holes still remain in the public understanding of energy in general and how concepts have a variety these emerging energy sources will impact our future and mitigate climate change. of connections to NGSS KidWind’s REcharge Academy training is a unique opportunity for educators to standards. Find out how you develop a robust understanding of wind and solar energy science, while also learning can adjust, not add to, your how to integrate engaging curricular and educational materials to teach about curriculum using the lens of renewable energy in the classroom. renewable energy as a focus. See our website for details on We need to build informed public understanding of energy and the impact it has on how we can help you teach the planet and society. KidWind works directly with educators, because we know that these standards. when educators have the tools and knowledge to affect student understanding, that has a huge impact in a classroom, among peers, and in the larger community. Why? • A 2012 Public Agenda study About REcharge Academies called The Energy Learning The two main goals of a REcharge Academy are to help teachers integrate renewable Curve showed that 50% of energy subjects in their classrooms and to increase local understanding of the social, Americans cannot name a technical, and scientific issues facing the modern energy industry. single example of renewable We do this at REcharge Academies by: energy. • Helping educators understand the sources and forms of energy, how the • The majority of Americans world generates and consumes it, and complex issues surrounding renewable cannot read and understand energy sources. their energy bills. • Offering a variety of activities that make it interesting and engaging for students to explore these issues. Impact! • Preparing educators to act as local hubs of information for their individual communities. Graduates of a REcharge Academy will leave the training with a minimum of $250 in gear and receive Kidwind/REcharge Lab products at reduced prices. A single graduate of a REcharge Academy can impact 100 teachers each year. If each teacher has 75 students, that one educators can impact close to 8000 students the first year and every year after. That is impact! REcharge Academies, 2015 2
During each four-day Academy, participants delve into concepts of electricity, generators, energy usage, efficiency, wind and solar power development, and the real-world applications of these clean energies. They will engage in this through: • Hands-on instruction • Experiments and evaluations • Lectures • Field trips and tours • Meetings with industry experts and speakers While each educator will take something unique away from their experience at a REcharge Academy, here are what some of our past graduates have done: • Provided REcharge Lab teacher training workshops in their state or region • Wrote grants to bring training to their school, region or state • Participated in the development of new curriculum and materials • Hosted KidWind Challenges or similar student events in their state • Represented REcharge Labs, KidWind, and WindWise at conferences and events KidWind and the history of REcharge Academies KidWind has been training teachers for more than 12 years. We have reached more than 20,000 teachers through our training and equipment. In the summer of 2008, we wanted to build a network of educators that would start to do more for renewable energy education than simply teaching one lesson in their classroom every year. We launched WindSenators, a week-long intensive training which focused primarily on wind energy, and gave educators everything they needed to act as a local hub of knowledge about wind power in their area. Today, this network has grown to 160 educators in 31 states and from other countries. These qualified and dedicated educators have impacted thousands of teachers and hundreds of thousands of students through teacher workshops, KidWind Challenges, and a variety of engaging regional events. REcharge Academies are the next evolution in our intensive training workshops. REcharge Academies build a foundation in energy basics which allows us dig deeper into solar and wind energy and engage teachers in more of our materials. 2015 REcharge Academy locations Harrisonburg, VA June 22-26: James Madison University Estherville, IA June 23-26: Iowa Lakes Community College Morrisville, NY July 7-10: SUNY - Morrisville Minneapolis, MN July 14-17: University of MN - Saint Anthony Lab Palm Desert, CA July 7-10: Palm Desert High School REcharge Academies, 2015 3
