URBAN CLIMATE PROJECT - UCP Coimbatore was selected under the Urban Climate Project by ICLEI South Asia along with Rajkot - funded by US - Department of State Objective : Assist the cities to implement infrastructure projects including cleaner and more efficient technologies and also to model GHG deflections to showcase benefits UCP Initiatives CMC Initiatives Associated Initiatives Bus stand EE lighting Streetlighting project TNIUS solar garden lights Wind-solar hybrid Solar City Master plan Domestic scale wind energy Wind energy potential EE lighting in Mayor’s and Commissioner’s chamber Energy policy Renewable Energy and Borewell pilot audit Energy Efficiency Resource Centre Energy saver Awareness programmes
Urban Climate Project – UCP WIND-SOLAR PV HYBRID SYSTEM PILOT PROJECTS The new bus stand has all modern facilities with ISO certificate The bus terminal is being built as part of measures to de-congest Gandhipuram, especially the Central Bus Stand area Area 3.09 acres and the new bus stand has 25 parking bays for buses Other facilities: - two air-conditioned waiting halls – one for men and the other for women - A separate room will be provided for mothers - A cloak room and four toilet blocks - Cameras installed and the images will be viewed at a control room for police personnel on security duty - The first floor of the terminal will have space to park two-wheelers, cars and cycles - open restaurants in second floors Renewable energy and energy efficient devices at new bus stand will also be a remarkable showpiece and awareness creation tool for thousands of people
The fluorescent tube lights were proposed in the groundwork stage of the contraction and later it changed to the energy efficiency lighting system for the energy optimization Energy efficiency lighting fittings were installed that comprises of CFL and T5 fittings of 525 nos 3.2 KW wind and solar power system installed at the Mettupallayam road new bus stand under ICLEI South Asia UCP project and it is inaugurated by Deputy CM, Tamilnadu Benefits: reliable power back up, energy savings, reduction in emissions Experience and Training on PV Wind Hybrid system - maintaining and monitoring the system provides first hand experience of engineers of Coimbatore Municipal Corporation and helped them to promote large scale use of such projects in other areas of the city It is proposed now to expand this hybrid system to entire bus stand with ICLEI South Asia assistance
BOREWELL ENERGY AUDIT There are 764 bore wells in entire corporation area Huge energy consumption on bore wells operation ICLEI South Asia prepared a energy audit report under UCP for 18 borewells in ward 27 & 28 That includes: The Present Status of the Tubewells Review & analysis of the Energy Bills Measuring the actual Power absorbed and water output Assessing the overall performance of the Tubewells Suggestions and recommendations to improve the energy efficiency and/or effectiveness of the Tubewell/s with conceptual cost, benefit and simple payback projections
Energy audit report recommended proposals to achieve 30% energy saving ICLEI South implemented the energy audit recommendations under UCP project to achieve the 30% energy savings The recommendations is now implemented in all 18 borewells It is proposed to carry out the energy audit to the remaining borewells in the CMC Borewell Energy Audit conducted under UCP

Energy Saver implementation at JNNURM office building The total load of the building is 45 KVA Proposed to achieve around 15% of energy savings Energy Saver equipments installed at JNNURM office to demonstrate the importance of operational energy efficiency The energy saver system is running successfully and the field test report shows around 15% savings.

ENERGY POLICY Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing the earth, and cities in particular The city corporation recognizes these issues and proposes to take action keeping in mind the long term vision of helping Coimbatore to ‘achieve improved service levels and better quality of life for the citizens of Coimbatore’ Energy Policy prepared under UCP to develop city level reform actions and policies for making the city a clean and efficient city Energy Policy Committee formed to generate city level energy policy under UCP
The Coimbatore Integrated Energy Policy 2010 intends to Outline methods to enable the city to grow in a sustainable and efficient manner Enable CMC to identify priority areas for energy efficiency programs and renewable energy adoption Be an overarching framework within which different sectors, such as industry, commerce and institutions, can formulate specific strategies for energy efficiency, renewable energy and emissions reductions Follow the provisions laid out in the National Action Plan for Climate Change (NAPCC) contribute towards the nation’s goals of reducing GHG emissions and energy consumption Put in a place a framework to ensure that future development takes places within a larger vision of the city’s energy goals

CITYWIDE POTENTIAL •% reduction in emissions possible over a ten year cycle: 15.21% from 2008 levels •IF UCP measures are replicated citywide •CMC initiatives and solar city master plan are key activities to help achieve the goal •Awareness raising and community involvement is also an important tool
