Opening Message Thank you to those who have renewed for the 2019/20 race season which is setting itself to be a phenomenal year of entertainment at Aquis Park. The support that we receive through membership This Racing Ahead edition presents a showcase establishes the foundation of our club which sets us of events for the next 6 months at Aquis Park. The up for a strong year ahead. With a successful 2018/19 Spring Carnival race days are taking shape and the behind us I look forward to some incredible weather proceeding meetings during Summer. Our plans to host our outstanding events. to build on the Ladies Day race day have exceeded themselves. Aquis Park will ride ‘The Wave’ this The first member’s event of the new season was the summer with the introduction of a new $250,000 pre-screening of the Ride like a Girl Movie on the feature race and an expanded Magic Millions horse’s birthday. This remarkable movie presented an program for 2020. Staged on January 4 as part of insight to the life of Michelle Payne- the first female “Aquis Raceday”, The Wave will be accompanied by a jockey to win the Melbourne Cup. 150 members $200,000 Magic Millions bonus, the $125,000 Aquis enjoyed pre movie drinks and nibbles at Outback Gold Nugget and the $125,000 Aquis Gold Pearl. Keep reading for more insight into the events at your race club. Followed by this we brought 25 of our members and their guests to Aquis Farm’s Canungra property to see their 2019 roster of stallions. We were all blown away by their horses, in particular Brave Smash who won the Manikato Stakes in 2018 and placed in numerous group 1’s. Champion trainer Chris Waller made a special visit to the farm and gave us an insight Steve Lines into how well one of his old racehorses Lean Mean Machine would sire offspring and what great qualities CEO he would transfer. It was an extra treat for members to pick up some signed Winx caps- all part of our ‘Members First’ program. I was happy to see our Board venture interstate to help promote the new Gold Coast Turf Club Trophy race which was held at Royal Randwick on the 24th of August. This race was organised in lieu of the Australian Turf Club Trophy that we hosted on Gold Coast Cup Day on the 4th of May. Hosting reciprocal races aids in showcasing our club on an international and elite platform. Similarly we are then aligned with one of the best race clubs in Australia. We hope to continue to host reciprocal races with the ATC and build on our strong relationship. 4 RACING AHEAD • ISSUE 53

Member First Focus TERRY DYSON From 4am each day, Terry Dyson can be seen at the training facilities making sure that each of her four legged friends have received the right amount of attention, care and love. For 13 years Terry Dyson has called Aquis Park her home club and her association with racing goes further back than that. She travels Australia to see her favourite horses run and loves nothing more than being up and close to them. She has small shares in a horse lovingly known as ‘Muddy’ that is based at the Gold Coast with her favourite up and coming trainer Josh Sweeney being the man who she entrusts all of her faith to look after “Muddy”. No matter where the horses go, Terry is in pursuit making sure she captures every moment of their journey. From the beach to the bush, she is in tow. Amongst the horses Terry has made a niche of friends at the club that she calls family. If you happen to see the ‘sweetheart of the GCTC’ on track, make sure you say hello and ask how her horses are doing. RENEWAL INCENTIVE WINNER For the month of June, all members who renewed their membership were entered into a draw to win a corporate suite for them and 19 guests. Congratulations are in order to Mark Fitzpatrick for winning this luxurious prize with five hours of premium food and beverages, private tote facilities and prime views of the racetrack. 12 RACING AHEAD • ISSUE 53
WINNING MEMBER Anna Hadden has come back from her free trip to Amsterdam with some great stories and photos. She won the free all expenses paid trip after she selected The Lord Mayor as her horse to run in the Heineken Gold Coast Cup. The 5 year old gelding trained by Chris Waller, was ridden by James McDonald and stormed home to finish strong in the $125,000 cup. This was all part of the incentive for guests who had booked into a function or bought a ticket to attend on the Gold Coast Cup day. Each person who was selected from a host of functions was able to randomly select a horse that was participating in the race. It was a great incentive that was supported by Heineken and has allowed Anna who has been a member for over 12 years to win a trip of a lifetime. RACING AHEAD • ISSUE 53 13
Ride Like A Girl As a little girl, Michelle Payne dreams of the impossible: winning the Melbourne Cup- horse-racings toughest two mile race. Ride Like a Girl is directed by Australian actress turned filmmaker Rachel Griffiths, making her feature directorial debut with this film, after a few short films previously. The inspirational true story of Michelle Payne, who beat catastrophic injury and odds of 100-1, to become the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup has been made into a sports biopic. The film depicts the hardship that Michelle endured and the heart that kept her motivated as she fought her way into the male-dominated world of jockeys. “I just want to say to everyone else to go “Get Stuffed” if they think women aren’t strong enough, because we just beat the world” Michelle was always ‘warned’ she could never be a world class jockey. She was not tough enough. She was not a man. But as the youngest daughter of a mad-cap family of jockeys, Michelle fights for every opportunity to ride hard and race fast. Its Michelle’s father Paddy (Sam Neil) and her family who champion her ambition, despite early failures, broken bones and a tragic family death on the racecourse. Maverick Trainer Darren Weir also sees Michelle’s unmistakable talent, intelligence, true grit and most of all, indomitable spirit and its under his watchful eye that Michelle gets a shot at the ‘impossible’- riding Prince of Penzance in the 2015 Melbourne Cup. Members were given the opportunity to attend the first screening of the movie before the general public on the 1st of August. The movie releases on the 26th of September at HOTA- Home of the Art Centre. Maree and Tess at the Ride Like a Girl prescreening 14 RACING AHEAD • ISSUE 53
RACEHORSE TO RIDING HORSE Helen Page is one of the Gold Coast’s most influential women in racing with a multitude of winners. One winner was The Ippy Jet who made a short stint in her boutique stable. After his last race in June 2014, he was retired in a paddock. The Hreszczuk family became aware of his situation and that he was not doing much in his retirement. With just a few days’ notice, they took ownership of newly named ‘Ippy’ with the intent to be their 13 year old daughter’s first horse. Since he came in to their daughters (Ruby) world almost 3 months ago, they have built such a bond, and Ruby is getting regular horsemanship and riding lessons on him from a close and very experienced friend. Ruby hopes to attend local club shows and to give Ippy the best life after racing. He is now her dressage and show jumping horse and her best buddy. Daughter Ruby and her family have received footage of Ippy during his racing days and is coming to the track to visit the place where he used to perform each week and meet Ippy’s old trainer Helen Page. Winter Carnival Success It is always nice to see local trainers competing at Metropolitan and Group Level. Congratulations to Garry Newham for winning the Treasury Brisbane Queensland Oaks with Winning Ways. Ciaron Maher used the Bundall training facilities throughout his campaign in Brisbane and took home the P.J. O’Shea Stakes with Kenedna. Chris Waller calls the Gold Coast his second home with his permanent satellite stable and foreman Paul Schaler confidently secured the win in the Dane Ripper Stakes and another win in the Queensland Guineas with Kolding. Although Kris Lees is the name beside the race book, it is local trainer Mel Eggleston who is running Kris’ Gold Coast satellite stable and proudly presented Sixties Groove for the Lexus Brisbane Cup and bought home the trophy. A huge well done is in order for our local trainers, strappers and owners who were successful and participated in the Winter Carnival. Some of the names mentioned above including Chris Waller, Winning Ways and Houtzen were nominated for the Racing Queensland Awards night. Gold Coast names Tyzone, Dan Griffin and Jag Guthmann Chester were all nominated for awards. Winning Ways was crowned overall Horse of the Year. What an amazing achievement for her Trainer and Owners. 16 RACING AHEAD • ISSUE 53
