(Trainer Suzanne Jenkins and Lenny Gomer with Champ Joey) Not so long ago, women were not allowed on the backstretch of any race track. Then, female trainers weren't allowed to be seen saddling their own horses in public, or visit a sick horse after dark. As the first female licensed trainer at Philadelphia Park, Suzanne Jenkins is a true example of just how far women have come in the world of horse racing. Suzanne began her training career in 1977, and has been a trailblazer for women in racing. Her top horses include Champ Joey and Lemon Strudel, as well as Batty, who went on to win first place in the 1987 Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct. We are very fortunate to have Suzanne with us for all this time, demonstrating the equal opportunities that racing provides today. On the Derby Trail..... Last Saturday, Life Is Good solidified his status as a leading Kentucky Derby contender with a blowout win in the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita Park, while Helium and Weyburn posted upset victories in the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby at Tampa Bay Downs and the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct, respectively. This Saturday, the focus shifts to Oaklawn Park for the $1 million Rebel Stakes, where 85 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby are up for grabs. - America's Best Racing Go to Article PA Horse Racing Commission Goes on Record Again Resisting Wolf's Reach for Purse Money

13 For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. - Psalm 139:13-14 (ESV) Chuck Yeager, one of my heroes, died at the end of last year at 97, almost 98. He was a famous test pilot, combat pilot, and the first man to break the sound barrier. I would love to have a pilot’s license and to be able to fly planes. He flew and tested the newest and most complicated machinery – so do you. Yes, you are more complex than any man-made piece of equipment, and every day you decide what to do with it (with you). One of the things about airplanes is that they go through regular and continuous rigorous testing and maintenance programs. It is a major reason for the amazingly good safety record of air travel. Some maintenance is done before, during, and after each flight. Other maintenance is required less often. A detailed and rigorous scheduled set of tests is necessary to make sure that the plane is safe to fly. Are you safe to fly? It is not a question one can answer all on his or her own. Air travel is an especially evocative picture of collaboration, and cooperation. The pilot does not make the decision to fly on his or her own. There is an army of people and machines working together to make that decision. With a piece of equipment even more complicated like ourselves we need to seek objective and wise assistance as well, both actively and continually. It takes time and energy, but it is worth it if we are to fly safely. We are about halfway through Lent, and the season of Lent is a time, in the wisdom of the Church, that is for self-examination, and maintenance. A basic practice during Lent is one of abstaining from something, or somethings. That is a testing and training of our will power. It is also a time to ‘clear our head’ and test our connection with God and God’s power. It is a time to test whether we are connecting to God, whether the connection is clear, and whether the power is flowing well. It is also a time of connecting and reconnecting with friends and community. Something that we refocus on more deeply during Lent so that we well maintain that connection with God, and others all throughout the year, throughout each day. It is not easy, but you take good care of your horses. They are complicated animals. They are relying on you. It is essential for them and others that you take good care of yourself. I am going to try and talk more about this. God help us to maintain open and close connection with You. Help us to find and maintain good connections with friends and counselors so we can be ready to safely fly higher and higher, day by day - Amen. Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed. - Proverbs 15:22 (ESV)
