RULES AND CONDITIONS The Green Island Competitions Society Inc. is a public organisation formed to encourage and develop the singing talent of young people. The fee is paid once per family. Solo entries and duets ‐ $4.00 per entry per competitor. For duet classes, the fee applies to each member of the duo. Scholarship Recital ‐ $10.00 ‐ The scholarship recital fee is additional to the fees above and includes for 2 songs listed in the recital schedule in Classes 50 and 51. To be eligible for prize money, competitors must enter and perform in 2 other classes (4 songs in total). Should this prove necessary, Competitors with the greatest number of solo entries will be contacted to choose one or more entries to be removed. Competitors who have entries cancelled to comply with the cap will receive a refund for items deleted. The intention of this clause is to keep the length of the competition to a sensible maximum but to allow as many individuals as possible to enter. 3. LATE ENTRIES – Entries received after the closing date may be accepted with a $20 late fee provided there is room in the programme. Page 3

TROPHIES – All trophies remain the property of the Society and all trophies won in the previous year are to be returned by the due date noted on the schedule. All trophy winners are responsible for the engraving of their names at their cost and to return the trophies in a clean and undamaged condition. This includes photocopies either for the adjudicator (Form No 2) or for an accompanist (Form No 5). The Society will ensure that all adjudicator copies are destroyed at the conclusion of the competition. It is the competitor’s responsibility to ensure destruction of any accompanist copies used. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in disqualification. A Performer’s Declaration (on the reverse side of the entry form) shall be completed and returned with the entry. Any subsequent changes to music being performed shall be notified to the committee at the music table on first arrival. At this time, the form will be altered and countersigned if necessary. This class is intended for those who would like to sing in front of an appreciative audience but who don't wish to compete in competition classes. We hope this will encourage participation in singing and provide an opportunity for singers to gain performance experience. Those singers who enter any competition classes are not eligible to enter this class. Backing tracks. a) Backing tracks are allowed but without backing vocals or “ghost singers” on the tracks. b) Performers will be asked to email their backings to us by a prescribed date before the competition. Playlists will be created. Performers will be requested to bring backings on their own device as a backup. c) The adjudicator may make comments on: ‐ Technical ability ‐ Costuming/dress/presentation ‐ Performance skills ‐ Entertainment value d) Other forms of acoustic accompaniment are also acceptable. Page Sponsored by: Amelia Hollows ADJUDICATOR Michelle Walker (Dunedin) Michelle found her voice under the tuition of Ruth Reid in Central Otago. She had considerable success on the competition circuit and was a member of the New Zealand Secondary Students’ Choir. She moved to Dunedin in 2006 to study music and history and was conferred with a Bachelor of Music in Performance Voice (2010). She debuted as a professional soprano soloist in Opera Otago’s 2011 production of Salieri’s First the Music then the words. She moved to Southland in 2012 and participated in Invercargill Musical Theatre’s productions of The Sound of Music, for which she won ‘Best Newcomer Award’ at the Southland Entertainer Awards in 2013, Mamma Mia!, and Phantom of the Opera, as the disgruntled diva Carlotta, for which she was nominated as Best Supporting Female at the Otago Southland Theatre Awards in 2016. She has been a soloist around Southland and Otago, including the Haydn Missa Brevis Concert Series, the Last Night of the Proms and many more. Michelle sings in New Zealand's representative professional choir, Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir (2013-present). Highlights of this group have been touring Australia (2014), giving a live radio broadcast to over 100,000 people, and performing in the televised 2015 Anzac Commemorations in Wellington. She continues to travel around the country for choral engagements, singing a variety of repertoire in multiple languages. She has been a member of the Freemasons New Zealand Opera Chorus and presided as a vocal judge at the Alexandra Vocal and Instrumental Competitions in 2013. Michelle has taught many private and itinerant singing pupils since 2011. Her family has recently returned to Dunedin to enable her to undertake a doctoral scholarship in History and Medicine. Alongside her family and study commitments, she will engage in music and singing in the region. Most recently, she was involved with a Chamber Choir under the directorship of John Buchanan and Tessa Romano. She looks forward to presiding over the Green Island Competitions. She hopes to see competitors develop their confidence in stage craft, as well as using their own healthy voice over the competition weekend. Page 10
