Hamilton City Hawks Road and Cross Country History In 1928, S F A Donovan & L G Turner began Hamilton Harrier Club. The club’s opening run was from Claudelands Showground on 28 May 1928 with 20 people in attendance. The club has steadily developed and evolved with events such as the Gilchrist Rosebowl and Paterson Cup, becoming solid race calendar events. Runners at the club peaked during the 1970s heyday, by the time the club had established events such as the Hamilton Marathon, Round the Bridges, and Huntly Half Marathon, along with its race calendar. In 1988, the clubrooms were established beside the picturesque Waikato River which In 1998, Hamilton Harrier Club joined with Hamilton Athletic Club to form Hamilton City Hawks. A feature of the club through its years has been quality leadership and management. At the time both clubs were struggling with both member numbers and financially and the formation of Hamilton City Hawks was seen as a new beginning. Since our inception, Hawks have been a nationally prominent club of high spirit and repute, catering for all ages and abilities. Drawing on the proud history of both clubs at local, national and international levels of athletics, having such illustrious names as Olympians Dick Quax, Dianne Rodger, Euan Robertson, Dave Moorcroft and Tony Rogers at the time being Harrier members. Since Hawks inception, Craig Barrett, Zane and Jake Robertson and Camille Buscomb have become household names in the NZ sporting arena as well as boasting National Champions in the Junior, Senior and Masters grades at Cross Country, Road, Mountain and 100km Championships. The ever changing nature of running in NZ means a modern club now also needs to provide for the huge number of recreational runners, whether they are training for a 10k, marathon or one of the many new trail events on the domestic calendar. Over recent seasons we have embraced these new members and encourage them to reach their goals. Hamilton Hawks Road and Cross Country have always been active in Race Management. Our marquee events, Huntly Half Marathon and Round the Bridges are currently under private event management agreements and continue to draw good attendance, offering the Hamilton and Waikato running and walking community top quality events. Our summer midweek run, The Eastside Riverbank 5k, offer an affordable weekly run on a safe and traffic free course. Club Uniform Club singlets are required for ANZ registered events. It is your choice as to whether you wear club colours at Club races. Singlets and T-shirts $50. Children singlets $10 per year rental. For information or uniform purchases please email Rob Townsend at r.townsendsport@gmail.com or text 027 645 5793 Coaching and Training Hawks Road and Cross Country has some great coaches offering regular sessions to help you achieve your goals, whatever those might be. At Hawks, you can join one of two speed work sessions a week in which you can touch base with a coach and enjoy the benefits of group training. Chat to any of the Hawks coaches about your training and they will point you in the right direction, providing advice, a mentoring system, or a programme geared towards a specific goal. Our coaches are: Graham Dudfield 0274 898 768 dudfield@xtra.co.nz Level 2 Athletics NZ Middle and Long distance coach with over 30 years’ experience. Leads the Tuesday evening group which is very popular with members. These sessions are tailored to suit all abilities of runners and varies from week to week. Anyone training for anything from a 5km race to a Marathon to Ultra distance run will benefit from these sessions. Keep an eye on the Hawks facebook page for the weekly speedwork session and locations. Individual coaching by Graham of athletes is currently full, however he is available to discuss how and where club athletes can get advice to improve their running. Helen Hall-King 020 400 18189 hamhawks@infogen.net.nz Helen is willing to help guide "middle of the road" woman runners towards establishing some good training patterns in order to help you achieve your goals. If you are looking to lower your times then she may be able to help you. Helen runs group training sessions on a Tuesday night so please contact her if you think she may be able to help. Youth and Children There are really two groups of youth athletes and their needs are different: Children 5-12: The focus for this group is on having fun with their running and developing the skills, fitness, strength and technique to continue with their running and racing into their teenage years. Other sporting activities, combined with one or two short runs during the week (depending on age) and 1km and 2km races on Saturday keep them fit and fresh. There are plenty of adult mentors at the club to let you know how much your child should be running for their age. Youth 13-16 (Secondary School): This older group of juniors are more focused on training Page 15 of 24
for specific events and benefit from group training sessions, a structured programme that suits their goals, and regular racing. Racing Juniors race over distances appropriate to their age. To prevent over racing, Hawks encourage their junior athletes to limit their racing to one event per day. In most cases, distances are as follows, although at some events 10 and 12 year olds race together over 2km. Boys/girls under 10: race 1 km Boys/girls under 14: race 3 km Boys/girls under 12: race 2 km Boys/girls under 16: race 4 km Check out the “Youth” column on the Hawks 2021 Events Program above for a list of events that have shorter distance races and typically cater for younger athletes. Juniors training sessions Juniors squad sessions vary from year to year depending on the needs and other commitments of the young athletes involved. Hawks do not provide organised coaching for children 12 years and under. However, Saturday club races are available to attend - see 2021 Race Calendar. Mike Riley 027 244 4414 foxriley@xtra.co.nz Coaches juniors from secondary school age on Tuesday evenings at Porritt Stadium and Thursday at Chartwell, both at 5pm. Page 16 of 24
Getting to races Many of the great events for younger athletes are outside of Hamilton. For parents with more than one child involved in sports, away events can sometimes be seen as a problem. Don't let out-of-town events be a barrier to your child entering and joining in. If your son or daughter would like to attend away events (e.g. North Island XC in Taupo) remember that there are plenty of responsible adults traveling to these events who are happy to provide transport and supervision. Contact race secretary in the first instance to find other parents that are going. For the under 15 year old Hawks they are fully registered members of Athletics Waikato BOP and can enter all Athletics NZ events for which they have an age grade race available. Page 17 of 24

Trophies Hamilton City Hawks’ rich history is reflected in its magnificent trophy list. The list is accessible not only to the competitive runner, but to every club runner through trophies for sealed handicaps, open handicaps, and team events. Serious runners can have no higher aim within club competition than to claim a club championship in cross country, road, or marathon, while every runner has an opportunity to win a club championship sealed handicap. Club championships offer a total of 39 trophies, in all age groups from under 10’s to masters, for men and women, including the magnificent LG Turner Cup and the President's Cup. Handicap races are amongst the most popular. Events such as Trophy Day and Sweeney Cup offer keenly contested friendly events to all grades, where every member has a chance to experience the excitement of being first home. Relay and team events, such as Bannister Plaque, Gilchrist Rosebowl, and Sing Relay are enjoyed by all and have great team rivalries. Additionally, the club trophy list provides for the most improved runner in each grade, various memorial trophies, several club trophies in open events and the prized Harrier of the Year award. There is also the Bird House Trophy up for grabs by the House with the most points by the end of the season. The Houses are Tui, Ruru, Kahu and Kiwi and each member is put into their House when they join the Club for the season. You are encouraged to attend as many Saturday events as possible in order to claim points for your given House either by taking part or volunteering. Page 20 of 24
