WHY INVEST IN THE

OUTDOOR ROOM

Improving your backyard is an affordable and achieveable way
to drastically improve your lifestyle at home. You and your family
will spend more time outdoors enjoying the fresh air and creating
memories.

Improving your outdoor spaces not only improves your lifestyle
– it also improves the value of your home, and at a much better
return than money spent on internal improvements. How often
do you hear real estate agents talk about “kurb appeal” when
assessing property values? This value actually grows when spent
outdoors. As your garden grows, the appeal and value grows with
it, while a kitchen or bathroom renovation will only depreciate once
complete.

As outdoor projects are far more DIY friendly than internal
renovations, you have the opportunity to take on the job yourself, in
your own time, putting your own signature style into it. This guide
is designed to ignite your creativity and shape your vision for the
project that’s right for you, while adding to the value of your home.

PAVING
HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST PRODUCT?
Whether you’re hiring a tradie or doing this as a DIY project, you
will need to ensure you pick the right product for your project.

While Adbri Masonry products are suitable for a variety of
applications, the truth is that some will perform better in certain
applications. Here are a few things to consider to pick the right
                                          paver for your project:

                                          APPLICATION OR PROJECT TYPE
Arguably the most important thing you will need to consider
is the type of traffic your pavers will be exposed to, either
                                          pedestrian or vehicular.

If the project is for vehicular traffic (a driveway for example), the
paver will need to be a minimum of 50mm thick and small format,
unless you intend to install the pavers on an engineer designed
                                          concrete base.

You should also consider the location of the pavers and the
expected frequency of use. If your pavers are going to be
used regularly in a highly visible area of your home like a new
entertaining area, it’s important to consider a quality solution that
will compliment your home. If they are to be used around a pool,
it’s vital to choose a Euro® range paver as they are the only Adbri

SIZE AND SHAPE OF THE AREA
The size and shape of the area to be paved is an important consideration for a number of reasons. Firstly,
some pavers are well suited to certain spaces as they are easy to work with. As an example, large format
pavers can make smaller spaces appear bigger – a great design hack!

The shape of the area is also a vital consideration as it may mean that you need some cut pavers – this
involves the use of a brick saw which requires caution when operating. Paver size choice can reduce the
number of cuts you may need (if any) so it is well worth considering. If you aren’t comfortable using a
brick saw, look at pavers and designs that can reduce the number of cuts you require.

                                      PAVING PATTERNS
There are a number of different paving patterns you can choose from and this can assist you in choosing
pavers as some are more suited for rectangular pavers and others square.

Some important things to consider are:
                                      • Some patterns will require cuts
                                      • 'Stretcherbond' and 'Stackbond' are considered the most DIY friendly as it requires minimal cutting and
                                       leaves little wastage
                                      • On a flexible base (compacted road base and sand), pavers must always be laid with a 3mm gap to
                                       avoid the edges chipping.

COLOUR AND TEXTURE
Another important consideration is the colour and texture you
require for your paving. If your paving project is an entertaining
area, courtyard or a patio, the colour and texture are important as
they will set the scene for the entire area.

Consider which paving colour will best compliment your existing
space by matching roof tiles, guttering or bricks/render.

DETERMINE HOW MANY BLOCKS YOU WILL NEED

In order to receive an accurate quote or to finalise an order of your
products, you will need to determine the quantity of blocks you need.
We’ve taken the guess work out of it and created an easy to use product

Along with the Concrete Masonry Association of Australia, we recommend
that you order an extra 5% to account for cuts and breakages.

Also, don’t forget your wall caps if necessary and corner blocks
if required!

FIRE PITS

Australia is blessed with a comfortable year-round climate that we’re lucky to enjoy.
While that is true, staying warm and cosy during cold winter nights is often only
possible when we are confined indoors, rugged up with multiple layers and electric
heaters on high. At least that was the case before fire pits became fashionable,
affordable and practical for installation for your backyard!

Adbri Masonry Brand Ambassador and DIY Landscaping Expert Jason Hodges has
long been a fan of fire pits, designing them in many of his feature works including his
award-winning garden at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.

“Fire pits are nature’s TV, they stimulate all of our senses, provide families with a central
gathering place that will become a feature of the yard and a place where countless
memories are made” explains Jason.

There are many benefits to creating a feature fire pit in your garden but if you’re like
most homeowners, you’ll be most attracted to the big-ticket benefits!

FOR SQUARES & RECTANGLES: VERSAWALL ® BLOCKS

A recommendation for DIY projects for square or rectangular
veggie gardens would be to build with Adbri’s Versawall® retaining
wall blocks.

The reason these blocks are perfect for veggie gardens is because
they are made for DIY with speciality corner units. This makes
returns and corners very easy to work with. These blocks are slightly
larger and use a special ‘capping’ unit to finish the walls.

This not only provides a great finish, it also doubles as casual
seating in your garden for informal entertaining!

FINISHING TOUCHES

LIGHTING

Australians love the outdoors, especially in spring and summertime
as the days get longer we enjoy our outdoor spaces more and
entertain more. To really add those finishing touches to your
outdoor space consider your outdoor lighting design, focus on
the primary objectives: illuminating the garden space to highlight
garden features, lighting up the pathways for safe navigation, using
accent lights to showcase the hardscape, or exterior house lights to
show off the frontage of your home or creating a stunning smartly-
lit outdoor entertaining area.

Go bold for a dramatic effect or subtle for a gentle, intimate
ambience. There are many options to consider, low voltage,
energy-efficient LED bulb and LED strip lighting that are waterproof
and perfect for your outdoor living space. A popular growing trend
are solar garden lights that provide a convenient DIY solution.

When planning light placement, it’s important to avoid having lights
at eye level that can make it uncomfortable for you or your guests.

Useful areas to add in some light:

- Front Entry - Entertaining areas
- Driveways - Fire Pit areas
- Pathways - Hardscape areas
