INVITATION April 6-8, 2022, Dresden PRIVACY 2.0 - INTERDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVES ON PRIVACY IN THE DIGITAL AGE Scientific Conference of the Doctoral Students of the Hans Böckler Foundation
PRIVACY 2.0 Global processes of mechanization, the digital penetration of our life as well as the pandemic-related state of emergency are putting the interrelationship between privacy and the public sphere to the test. The subtle normalization of a multi-layered surrender of private data is accompanied by multifaceted consequences for individual, social and structural conditions. On the one hand, both the economic and the political use of in-depth surveillance struc- tures and implicit control options affect the protected private sphere of and thus basic civil rights. On the other hand, digital options contribute to the opening up of new public and private spaces e.g. in the realms of security, consumption or professional education. If, however, the panoptic view gains the upper hand, self-determination and heteronomy go hand in hand and the leveling of privacy takes its course unnoticed. This raises fundamental questions: How informed, how voluntary and self-determined is private data getting into the hands of companies, the state or other actors? What might be the right balance between technological pro- gress and private or public benefit? With the goal of sharpening the percepti- on of digitally induced social changes, as well as identifing innovative potentials and to discuss how to shape their implementation in a responsible manner, the scientific conference of the Hans Böckler Foundation's doctoral students in 2022 will deal with the multifaceted nature of privacy in the digi- tal age. Contradictions, areas of tension, practical references and an interdis- ciplinary variety of theories will frame the debate, which will have references to current events and future perspectives. The connection of different universes of discourse shall create an inspiring and insightful opportunity to develop groundbreaking ideas for the design, preservation or transformation of privacy. We invite interested and curious young scholars from all disciplines and fields to participate in these multi- perspective conference processes in a thoughtful, critical and responsive way! Seite 1
