POUND RIDGE GO GREEN DAY Presented to the Pound Ridge Town Board June 13, 2013 Prepared by: Peter J. Avellino Contributors: Conservation Board, Sustainability Task Force and Pound Ridge Land Conservancy
Pound Ridge offers a wonderful environment to: Live and grow a family Enjoy the natural state of our backyards Enjoy the surrounding town made up of: q Local preserves and conserved lands q Other natural areas q Natural flora q Natural wildlife and their habitat q Recreation and community activities
Current State Town boards and local organizations continually try to educate residents through the use of programs and written No venue for town boards and material on protecting the organizations to collaboratively environment and reducing develop a single comprehensive their carbon footprint program that brings all these messages together in one place – annually, for the residents
Issues Residents with limited knowledge or understanding of what is required to care for their land Significance behind the protection of ground water sources, habitat health and wildlife Lack of an annual wide-‐scale education event, in one place, critical to protect and preserve our town’s natural state through the action of residents
Solution Form an Ad hoc Environmental Committee, responsible for creating an annual educational enrichment event in the town park to empower, through knowledge, residents to make responsible choices to protect their environment, consisting of: v Town boards/commissions v Local organizations v Environmentally conscious local businesses/contractors v Environmentally conscious residents
Importance of this Ad hoc Environmental Committee A collaborative effort for an annual enrichment program Create awareness through education and best practices in our own backyards and lifestyles Empower our community to live lighter on the land and reduce their carbon footprint Possible future goals An online presence for resources and ongoing communication Additional educational programs throughout the year Development and adoption of an Environmental Action Plan

Event Awareness Activities Guided Nature Walks Identify plants and animals, and recognize damage to the Educational Demonstrations understory and resultant environmental constraints Designed for residents of all ages to participate and learn how to live lighter on the land: • Composting • Recycling • Disposal of harsh household chemicals and items -‐ including unused or expired medications • Backyard landscaping and gardening • Meadow, wildflower, and forest management • Building maintenance and sustainability • Home energy system alternatives Workshops & Lectures • Local farming Management of our backyard • Geo-‐cashing for kids ecosystems such as invasive • Beverages and light fare -‐local farms, organic plant removal, wetlands foods management, well water protection, septic safety, landscaping, and gardening
What is the expected cost for this event? The anticipation is that the Town of Pound Ridge will contribute little or no money for this event since: ü Activities will be run by volunteers ü Display items will be borrowed from the greater community ü Prizes will be donated by local businesses, organizations and residents ü Town-‐wide mailing for the event will run approximately $2K
Will there by an admission fee to enter into the park? A admission fee is not recommended at this time since: Ø Most activities will be offered at no-‐cost to the residents Ø Prizes for certain activities will be donated by the community Ø Beverages and light fare, including locally grown farm products, will be offered on a pay-‐as-‐you-‐go basis to the residents in attendance
When should this event be scheduled? The 1st weekend of May -‐ just as the planting season gets underway to have a positive impact on our local environment

Summary and Significance Education Community Continued Awareness A critically needed committee An annual fun-‐filled educational An annuity that can adopt and family event with food and prizes to foster collaboration of all while providing residents with support new and best practices as in-‐town expertise to develop the knowledge that empowers they are developed year after year an environmental enrichment them to make responsible program under a single choices to protect their leadership environment
