FROM THE GOOD NEWS DEPARTMENT… THE HEART OF FAIRFAX O n December 12th of last year, an injured bald eagle was found by a resident along a trail near Burke Lake. The police were called, and animal control officers took the eagle to Wildlife Veterinary Care in Boyce, Virginia. The raptor, believed to be about five years old, was diagnosed with an injured shoulder and lead poisoning. In a Facebook post, the Fairfax County Park Authority said, “he is believed to be one of the pairs of eagles” nesting in the Vesper Island State Wildlife Refuge in the middle of Burke Lake. There are more than 400 active bald eagle nests in Virginia. While most are located along the Chesapeake Bay, the bald eagle population appears to be moving inland. Veterinarian Belinda Burwell said the Photos: www.flickr.com/photos/ffxparks/albums/72157712652985167 bird had five times the normal amount of lead in his system. She treated him for the lead, and treated his shoulder with anti-inflammatories for the injury. She said her team sees between five and ten eagles with injuries each year and lead poisoning is one of the more common afflictions. Park Authority spokesman Christine Bratt said it’s not uncommon for injured wildlife to suffer from lead poisoning because anglers use lead tackle and the “fish eat those and then the eagles eat the fish, so they ingest that into their system.” Almost a month after he was found and nursed back to health, about 500 well-wishers gathered to watch as the bird was released back into the wild at Burke Lake Park. Despite a short time down and out, Dr. Burwell said she is confident that the eagle will be welcomed back into the wild. “Eagles pair for life,” she said. “He’s only been gone a month so we’re pretty sure that his mate will accept him back.” After a few running hops, the healthy eagle flew off to the Lake. 10 www.FairLakes.com
And more good news … T he eighth grade class of 2020 at Kilmer Middle School is learning to create an attitude of gratitude by appreciating one good thing in their lives every day. The exercise helped the students realize that their good fortune is not shared by everyone and they wanted to express their gratitude in action by doing something for those less fortunate. They started a service project to repurpose disposable plastic bags into a product that could help the homeless. Photo: https://kilmerms.fcps.edu Did you know that one plastic grocery bag can equate to nine yards of “plarn”? Using plastic grocery bags, the students wove “plarn” – yarn created by cutting and tying together strips of plastic bags – into sleeping mats. The mats provide a weatherproof barrier against the cold ground. The plastic bag yarn project also provided the students an opportunity to discuss recycling and how plastic can provide insulation by trapping heat to provide some warmth. Students enlisted the Kilmer Middle School community for donations of plastic grocery bags since each mat required approximately 800 bags to make. Each mat took eight to 10 hours to weave. Some students were tasked with cutting off the bags’ handles and splitting the seams while others wove the 6 x 3.5 foot mats. The sleeping mats were donated to Homeless Hope, a local nonprofit that provides clothing and supplies to those in need. The mats were distributed to homeless individuals in December. But wait, there’s more … www.FairLakes.com 11
FROM THE GOOD NEWS DEPARTMENT… K9 Max T he Fairfax County Police Department K9 Unit includes 15 patrol/narcotic detection dogs and three bloodhounds. Most of the patrol dogs come from Europe, as do many police K9s in the eastern portion of the United States. The dogs usually range in age from 11 to 16 months when purchased and already have a bit of training. Once purchased, the dog is assigned to a specific handler. The dogs become part of the handler’s family and reside at their home. The team has no specific preference for working dog breeds, with German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Dutch Shepherds, and dogs with crossed bloodlines all being a part of the team. They look for dogs that are social around people, confident in their surroundings, and aggressive when the need arises. The FCPD K9 Unit had a bittersweet celebration on February 19th, as they celebrated the retirement of K9 Max. K9 Max is a 9 1/2-year-old German Shepherd who came to the United States from the Czech Republic. Max is retiring from police work because his handler was promoted out of the K9 Unit. K9 Max joined the FCPD in 2012 and had a distinguished career serving as one of the SWAT K9’s, where he was a valuable asset to the team. K9 Max doesn’t get to slack in his retired days at home, though, as he has to keep watch over his little sister Luna! HOME & GARDEN Decorating in the New Decade T he perfect time to update your home is at the start of a new decade. After ten years of the same old, same old, now is the time to roll on a trending new paint color, refresh the heart of your home with painted kitchen cabinets, or simply add a new piece of art to your gallery wall. And if you want to make a serious statement this year, then try incorporating one of the hottest home decor trends of 2020… vintage. Grandmothers usually know best, and that goes for home décor, too. More than likely, what was "in" when Grandma decorated her house and then "out" when your mom decorated hers is back "in" again. After all, trends are cyclical. But there are certain classics that will never go out of style, and they can be traced right back to your family's matriarch. So, channel your inner granny with these vintage ideas… Vintage Accents One thing we're starting to see is a nod to vintage and traditional detailing, like spooled legs, spindles, Victorian embellishments, and other elements in furnishings from the 1800s and early 1900s. These accents will add charm and a touch of timelessness to your abode. But don’t overdo it! Designers are incorporating just one or two statement pieces with critical placements. 26 www.FairLakes.com
HOME & GARDEN Antique Art Make 2020 the year you start — or continue to grow — your art collection. If any type of antique is making a comeback, it's art. Antique art adds class and a sense of history to your home, and people love that it has a story to it. Kitchen Art While you're collecting those pieces of art, be sure to scout for some for the kitchen. The kitchen is the place in the house where people naturally gather so turn your focus to making the kitchen a room in the house and not a machine for cooking. That can be accomplished by hanging art in the kitchen or using open shelves to display items that show off your personality. Patina Accents As is obvious from the above, a significant emerging design trend is an appreciation of patina and age. In addition to vintage furniture accents and antique art, a sense of history and heritage is played out in color trends such as clay and terracotta, as well as decorative items such as earthenware and ceramics. The next time your friends come over and compliment your timeless taste in décor, just tell them you got it from your Nana! www.FairLakes.com 27
