The Editor Speaks Dear Members I hope you enjoyed this year’s National Day celebrations as much as I did. Somehow everything felt refreshingly different to me even though the scale and format of the celebrations had to be adjusted or scaled down to adhere to the restrictions necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic. What impressed me particularly was the sight of six RSAF fighter jets flying in formation over eight hospitals across Singapore to honour our healthcare workers. Here at the Club, our golf courses were packed as usual over the National Day weekend. The lines of golfers clad in the national colours of red and white created vibrant celebratory visuals. In some ways they helped to make up for the lack of traditional club activities to mark the event this year which, understandably, had been curtailed by the pandemic safety measures. In this issue of RV, we too pay tribute to our very own special group of people: staff members who have received the Long Service Award (5 to 25 years) for their dedicated service to the Club. Nasarudin Ismaon from Kranji, for instance, has been with us since 1994 when NSRCC was newly opened. Or Yam Chung Wai a veteran of 15 years from Changi. Read what they and their colleagues have to say about their NSRCC journey and the satisfaction they derive in serving the Club and its members in their various positions. We also have two special write-ups on our Club’s continuing support of the Whole-of-Government efforts during this pandemic. Senior Minister of State for Defence Mr Zaqy Mohamad visited our Changi bungalows which are now serving as a Government Quarantine Facility (GQF) and our Club President LG Melvyn Ong had a site tour of the temporary dormitories at NSRCC Kranji. With the need to keep safe in the current environment, the Club is constantly looking at ways to protect members when they are using the facilities. One recent measure was the application of a self-disinfecting coating called SDST on common touch points such as those in Resort Bowl, Fitness Centre, Sky Range and all golf buggies. Now that Vice-Captain Brian Tan has introduced us to the signature as well as most challenging holes at NSRCC, he turns his attention to two holes that he thinks are likely to be the favourite of many golfers. I will leave you to find out what these are and why he thinks they are immensely playable. See you at the Club soon! Regards, Chua Swee Kiat Editor RESORT VIEW 3
Seen & Heard Enhancing Safety Measures for our Members and Staff A s part of our Club-wide efforts to further enhance precautionary measures, several high contact touch points at various facilities have been treated with self-disinfecting coating. These include the steering wheels and handles on all buggies at both NSRCC Changi and Kranji, basket handles and tags for the bays at Sky Range, door handles at the Golf Reception, exercise equipment in the Fitness Centre, bowler’s console at Resort Bowl and several other locations. The coating is called SDST and it kills bacteria, viruses and fungi upon contact on treated surfaces. It is also the same coating that is applied to buttons in all HDB lifts. In addition to spraying SDST on high contact touch points, these areas also continue to undergo frequent cleaning and sanitisation. The effectiveness of SDST is not affected by cleaning solutions. In fact, it can last up to three months. We hope that with this additional measure, the Club will be able to provide a safer environment for our members and staff. 4 RESORT VIEW

SEP/OCT 2020 Fellow NSRCC members, With the declaration of phase 2 by the Government, our golf courses here in Singapore opened for play, and we have seen a constant trend of flights being quickly snapped up by golfers suffering from “golf deprivation” during the Circuit Breaker period. Coupled with the on-going travel restrictions and our Club’s No-Guest policy, getting a flight is no doubt a challenge. The Club Management and Greens Committee have recently implemented temporary mitigation measures to the existing booking process, to provide a fair and equitable booking system to all our members. On another note, you would be aware that there is a list of precautionary measures in place to help keep all of us safe and prevent the spread of the virus. To amplify SGA’s concept of “Play Golf and go Home”, we would like to highlight that to avoid prolonged intermingling, it would be best to avoid staying in the Club longer than necessary after your golf game. I urge all of you to do your part to observe these measures and ensure that your flight mates do so as well. This would prevent any action from the authorities which might lead to temporary closure of the courses. On top of the few mentioned above, below are also some of the other measures which are posted in the advisory on the Club’s website. - All individuals who have recently returned from ALL other countries (not just limited to COVID-19 affected countries) in the last 14 days prior to visiting the Club will be refused entry. - All individuals, both members and visitors, are to fill up and submit declaration forms upon every visit so as to enable contact tracing. - Observe social distancing throughout all our facilities, so please look out for the markings on the ground during queuing. F&B outlets will also re-arrange their layouts to space out diners. Last but not least, stay safe and enjoy your golf! Winston Toh Club Captain

On Par The Favourite Holes By Brian Tan, NSRCC Vice Captain at NSRCC Changi and Kranji I n my previous two articles, I reviewed some of our signature holes and holes with low indices. Both articles contained a fair amount of lamentation of lost balls and penalty strokes. In this article, the focus is on holes where the score should be a par or better, even for weekend golfers. Changi Hole #16 301m from the Blue tees means that a driver off the tee isn't required to get on the green in two. Using a shorter and supposedly more accurate club off the tee should take the bunkers on the left, OB on the extreme left and red penalty area on the right out of play. My personal preference is for a hybrid 180m straight down the middle (hopefully) which should leave a 120m approach shot to the green. The green is long but narrow, guarded on both front left and right with deep bunkers. The slope on the right hand side of the green after the bunkers is less steep, so the preferred areas to miss the green is long and right. Long and left is also not preferred as there is the cart path and I've seen balls get an extra bounce off the cart path into the OB. The green has three tiers but the transitioning slopes between the tiers are not that severe, so two putting for par should be doable. 12 RESORT VIEW 10
On Par Kranji Hole #4 In the previous article, I wrote about not playing particularly well on long dog-leg left Par 4. So for a short dog-leg right Par 4, the outcome should be the opposite. At 251m from the Blue tees, this is a drivable Par 4 for some golfers. When I was younger and hitting longer, I did drive the green once, and missed the eagle putt, but did 2-putt for birdie. If one can reach the green (or hit 220m and beyond) with the tee shot, please remember to let the front flight clear the green before hitting. A more conventional way of scoring on this hole would be to hit the drive over the bunker in the middle of the fairway, leaving about a short approach of about 60m. Even with a shorter club off the tee, as long as one crosses the bunker, the approach should be less than 100m. The green is slightly upward sloping when approaching from the center of the fairway, providing a bit of backstopping buffer for attacking pins. Approach shots that are too long will bring bunkers at the back left into play. Misses to the right end up on the steep slopes leading to the wetland, so try to avoid the right as much as possible. The green isn't a very large green, so two putts for par should be doable. Golf is easy (when writing about it). RESORT VIEW 11 13
