Springtime Safety The time of the year we have all been waiting for, springtime! Sunshine, spring flowers, and the opportunity to spend more time outside! With springtime comes a lot of wonderful things, but also some things that have the potential to be harmful to your pet. Being aware of potential hazards will allow you and your pet to enjoy the spring weather without worries! Pesky Parasites Warmer weather brings along pests like fleas, ticks, and heartworms that could infest your pet if they don’t have the proper preventatives. Choosing a quality parasite preventative that protects against all of these parasites will be your pets best defense. Make sure your pet is on a year-round heartworm preventative as heartworm disease is transmitted through mosquitos and is difficult to treat and painful for your pet. Consult your veterinarian on what might be the best preventative for your furry friend. Be Careful of Easter Time Treats and Decorations Easter brings along lots of yummy treats but be sure these treats are out of reach from your pets as chocolate and xylitol can be lethal for them. Be sure to keep plastic Easter grass away from pets, especially kitties, as they tend to like to chew on these items and could potentially swallow them, causing intestinal obstructions. Microchip, Check! More time spent outside allows for more chances for your pet to wander off. Ensure that your pet is microchipped and all information associated with the microchip is up-to-date including a few phone numbers for people to contact you incase your pet goes missing. Springtime Sneezes Did you know that our pets can get springtime allergies just like we do? Consult your veterinarian if your pet has developed itching and sneezing recently, they may have seasonal allergies. HAPPY HOME UPDATE Zoey is one lucky girl to have found her way to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter! Zoey arrived at the Shelter with several issues affecting her wellbeing; she had severe dental disease and some troublesome mammary masses that needed to be removed. Because of our generous supporters, Friends was able to give Zoey the necessary surgery and dental procedures to live a Friends of the Fairfax County Animal Shelter long and healthy life. Zoey found a forever home with a Shelter staff member! Zoey’s mom says she loves afternoon zoomies up and down the hallway and is her constant shadow. She lives with two cat friends and shares her meals with them, because they like to lick the gravy. Despite Zoey’s heart issues, her medications help tremendously and she acts like a puppy! We love being able to visit with Zoey around the Shelter when she comes to work with her mom. Tyson quickly wiggled his way into the hearts of staff and volunteers at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter with his bright smile and goofy self. Tyson came to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter requiring a TPLO surgery to repair the torn ligament in his knee to improve his quality of life. Without hesitation, Friends stepped in to fund this costly surgery for Tyson and very soon after he was adopted by an awesome family! Tyson’s mom Kristen says Tyson has made himself right at home and has quickly stolen the hearts of friends and family. Tyson loves car rides and running around a big backyard when he gets the opportunity. Belly rubs, Super Chewer Kongs, and treats are still his favorite things! Kristen added “[Tyson is] so fast and strong that most people think he’s a puppy and don’t believe me when I say he’s 8! It’s crazy to think he had knee surgery less than a year ago! Special thanks to FFCAS for funding his surgery and to his foster mom who made sure he healed up well! We’re so in love with Tyson and he’s truly been the perfect addition to our family”. That is one happy boy, we are so happy he found a home with such a wonderful family! Follow us on social media to keep up with all the action! @FFCAS @ffxFriends
