New possibilities using digital twin in the fields of protection and automation Intelligent and future-proofed – Enjoy the agility
The “Digital Twin” – A virtual copy of a physical asset ▪ The digital twin integrates all data, models, and other information of a physical asset generated during engineering, commissioning, operation, or service. ▪ The role of the digital twin is to predict and optimize performance of a physical asset (whether for design, production or operation). To this purpose, we use simulation methods and/or data-based methods. Unrestricted | © Siemens 2021 | Smart Infrastructure | Hannover Messe 2021
What is then new? From a few special fields of application to mainstream Previous state of the art New possibilities ▪ Network models (from three-phase demonstration ▪ Performance: more efficient linking of real data model to real-time simulator) with digital images through new technologies (IoT, ▪ Network simulation and planning tools sensor technology, Big Data, AI...) ▪ Network control and SCADA systems ▪ Standardization & Composition: from single ▪ Asset / resource monitoring systems dedicated applications to a "System Digital Twin" by using standards (CIM, IEC 61850...) ▪ Scaling: from a few special fields of application to mainstream ▪ Effectiveness: faster translation of results into concrete benefits Gartner predicted that “by 2021, half of large industrial companies will use digital twins, resulting in those organizations gaining a 10% improvement in effectiveness.”
What are the benefits of Digital Twins? Testing of the energy automation system within minutes, without hardware and without additional effort • Simulation and validation of product properties • Faster energization of new systems thanks to shorter project lifetimes • Increase engineering quality • Virtual testing before start of commissioning • Shortest commissioning times • Reduced OPEX with shorter outages for higher availability thanks to better pre-testing • Efficient, scalable trainings on the job • Fast and realistic fault analysis by easily reproducing the behavior of products and systems Outage Training and Time and Agility and management maintenance Costs Flexibility

““The use of DigitalTwin was a success, it was possible to identify that the performance of the relay was due to its firmware not acceptable, herewith we could take the necessary measures in time and avoid that this type of events would cause the trip of new devices. We can see a great potential in this tool that will be of great use to us, and much of our work in the field can be developed in the laboratory and maintenance times in the field could be reduced substantially.“ DSO, Colombia
Use case for substation design or device approval Virtual Hardware-in-the-Loop Use case Virtualization with DigitalTwin ▪ Simulation of protective device behavior in ▪ Less effort and investment complex fault scenarios ▪ Greater flexibility and scalability So far Power System Simulation ▪ HW-the-loop test with real-time simulators ▪ Very complex, expensive equipment COMTRADE u(t), i(t) Trip, I/O IEC 61850 Fault scenario Communication network
Summary and Outlook ▪ Digital Twins have long been used in the industry. ▪ New technologies enable more flexible and scalable use of Digital Twins, which will result in greater benefits and thus a wider use. ▪ With DigitalTwin, time and costs in engineering, operation and maintenance can be reduced ▪ Virtual simulation of complete substations will be possible through interoperable interaction of manufacturer-specific digital twins via standardized communication interfaces ▪ Interested?
