Hello! I am Sara Torabi I am here because I want to tell you about my experience of CLUSTER Scholarship EEB-Zero Energy Buildings In Smart Urban Districts
Ph.D. Cluster Start Publications Project RESEARCH 3 years Internship RESEARCH Courses Study Abroad 3 years Conference Defense Ph.D.
The EEB (Zero Energy Buildings in Smart Urban Districts) project aims to pursue the increase the energy efficiency in buildings, and then of urban districts, through the pervasive use of technologies for the real-time monitoring and control of environmental parameters and of the energy production/consumption by means of smart devices. Collected information were be delivered to distributed and remote platforms through a suitable communication and data management infrastructure. Suitable web services were then be used to offer this data to applications used by both final users and providers. The infrastructure is supposed to allow for the interoperability among devices over heterogeneous networks to facilitate the interaction between the Smart Buildings inside a Smart-District.

6 months stay at EPFL | École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne University SOLAR ENERGY AND BUILDING PHYSICS LABORATORY • necessary and bridging steps • writing a joint paper to submit LESO-PB toward the development for it for the consideration to a my Ph.D. thesis. peer-revised journal. • mutale benefits. I intended to • monthly seminar, which I expose the themes of my Ph.D. always attended and from and my own developed field of which I obtained many research to the research feedbacks and suggestions for community at LESO-PB to my thesis. obtain more comprehensive • regular lunches, meetings, and perspectives on the issues that I coffees during which many QS-World University Ranking work on. useful ideas were exchanged. • I was also very eager to benefit • many laboratory members EPFL is 12th in the world from the wider context of EPFL, while at EPFL to discuss my itself well known for its thesis. EPFL is 3rd in Europe strength in the urban/district energy planning research area.
“ Turning back on these last few months, I would have to say that this experience was the great opportunity for my Ph.D. I am very pleased that we have achieved several outcomes from this visiting and I noticed a significant productivity gain, as a result of being in a new environment, particularly an environment as EPFL. The success of the collaboration has created the relationship between Politecnico and EPFL. 12

300 hours of Internship • gain valuable industry knowledge • get my foot in the door at a company in my field • develop my professional skills • got something to show a potential employer next time I am in an interview • may be recruited to work full-time best and brightest in the • grow my network of professional contacts fast-paced fiber-optic world of • confidence in professional environments will telecommunications improve • It's a low-commitment way to test out a job and career path
RESEARCH
Main Objective Multi-Criteria Spatial Decision Support System for urban energy planning in the built environment The Ph.D. research focuses on the problem of ENERGY CONSUMPTION OF THE BUILDING STOCK in the urban environment, using GIS TO MAP ENERGY CONSUMPTION. The aim of the project is to explore ENERGY CONSUMPTION PATTERNS based on STATISTICAL-ENGINEERING methods to provide a methodology for evaluating different saving scenarios based on multi-criteria analysis in the context of policy implementation to promote effective and sustainable urban planning. This fact can help to assess, over a mid to long term period, the mix of measures by analyzing meaningful scenarios focused on ENERGY CONSUMPTIONS/ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS/ ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL CRITERIA. The RESULT is able to be used to VISUALIZE INTERACTIVELY BY STAKEHOLDERS and explore a range of possible futures for assisting urban planners, policy makers and built environment stakeholders in their efforts to plan, design and manage LOW_CARBON CITIES.
