Part time Team Administrator and Youth Worker posts The Kent Estuary Youth project is a charity based in Milnthorpe, serving the surrounding villages; it was founded by local churches six years ago. Our programmes, developed with young people of secondary school age, aim to provide fun and engaging activities that also create opportunities for young people to find ways of coping with the personal, social and emotional challenges they face. We have an expanding range of provision and ambitious development plans. We are now looking for an Administrator to join our growing and supportive youth work team. (8 hours pw; £12.50 to £14.00 ph depending on experience) As an integral part of the team, you will need the experience and confidence to take a lead responsibility for organising and delivering the administrative functions that support the programme of activities and the efficient functioning of your colleagues in the team. You will be a self-starter/self-motivated and identify with our activity and approach. There can be some flexibility about the hours, but they will be spread over at least three days. We are also looking for an additional, sessional Youth Worker for a minimum of 16 hours possibly rising to 22hrs. There can be some flexibility about the hours worked, but they will generally be out of school time. With your support, Milnthorpe Art Exhibition has provided an entertaining event each summer for 30 years up to 2019. The Exhibition has been popular with visitors and artists, and together over all those 30 years we have raised over £180,000 for the church and for many other charities and good causes that serve local people. The Exhibition was cancelled in 2020 due to statutory Covid restrictions and in 2021 due to the ongoing pandemic making people reluctant to volunteer. The Exhibition is very complex and requires sufficient volunteers to help with receiving the display stands from store and building them in St Thomas’ Church, receiving around 700 paintings, hanging about 400 paintings, stewarding, catering, selling about a third of paintings displayed and finally returning unsold paintings, dismantling the display stands and lighting and moving them to store. Sadly, the call for volunteers for the 2022 Exhibition again resulted in a significant shortfall. The Management Committee felt it could not operate safely or commit expenditure without sufficient volunteers in place, so it decided to cancel the Exhibition once again. The future of the Exhibition will be determined at the Annual General Meeting in November 2022. Some members of the current Management Committee, including myself, have indicated that they will not be standing for the Committee again. It needs a Committee of around 8 dedicated Members to run the Exhibition safely and successfully with the help of volunteers. If we are unable to form a new Committee in November, I will be recommending that we should celebrate our success over 30 years, but disband the Exhibition at the AGM. If you feel the Exhibition should continue and you are interested in joining the Committee, please contact us through our website, www.milnthorpe-artexhibition.co.uk Jim Robson, Chair, Milnthorpe Art Exhibition Management Committee Nature Watch St John’s churchyard 12th June was enthusiastically attended by several families and other individuals. A full list of all the plants, insects, animals, recorded is being compiled and will be on display in St John’s. A most elegant frieze of vegetation collected was on show at the end of the afternoon. As an exercise in Citizen Science most people attending filled out an official record form and these are being forwarded to A. Rocha to become part of the charity’s national record of biodiverstity in UK churchyards. A warm thanks to all who helped and came and made it happen. 7

Dear Friends letter A special whole-school event was being held by the Christians in a secondary school. By means of invitation they gave out free sweets along with a little slip of paper, which read: ‘The best things in life are free. John 3:16’. After a while, one lad came back and asked, ‘Who is this John I have to meet at quarter past three? And where do I meet him?’ These curious numbers which caused the chap such confusion have been printed in Bibles over a few centuries as a way to locate a particular sentence in the Bible. With so many printings of the Bible, we cannot rely on page numbers and so chapter and verse numbers took prominence. The reference John 3:16 is one of the most quoted. You might remember how someone in the crowd would hold it up on a placard at major football tournaments. At FIFA World Cup matches in the 1990s, one wag made a sign displaying ‘Jack 3:16’, in honour of Mr Charlton, the Republic of Ireland’s then manager. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” reads John 3:16 This has been called the most famous sentence in all literature. However a famous sentence can also become too familiar and read like a hackneyed cliché. It is certainly a sentence to be remembered. It speaks of love, a gift and a hope – vital components of human existence and relationship. Yet these priceless commodities come from outside ourselves and are quite undeserved. The focal point of these things is the Jesus and his cross. Not only does it seek to explain the cross, this sentence explains Christians, what motivates and animates them. They are not do-gooders who are trying to get into God’s good books by their charitable acts or hymn singing. Rather as recipients of that wonderful gift of Christ and his rescue, they have found it is made for sharing. John 3:16 is a sentence to recall: a love that gives so generously, a gift that is undeserved completely and a hope that is offered so widely. The school pupil misread his invitation containing ‘John 3:16’. I hope he recognised the invitation contained within John 3:16. Revd Bryan Kerr Priest-in-charge of Levens, Heversham and Milnthorpe 13
