A LET T ER F R O M T H E D E AN Dear Graduate: On behalf of the faculty and staff of The George Washington University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), I congratulate you on your well-earned academic achievement. I hope you are as proud of your accomplishment as we—your professors, advisors, and mentors—are. We have watched you learn, grow, widen your perspectives, and deepen your understanding of the engineering and computer science disciplines and of the critical roles they play in our increasingly technology-driven world. Naturally, we wish we could be alongside you and your family and friends now to celebrate the culmination of your hard work. However, the need for this year’s ceremony to be virtual in no way diminishes the value of your achievement and our recognition of it. In addition to this year’s virtual ceremony, we look forward to inviting you to return to campus when we are John Lach, Ph.D. able to safely celebrate you in-person with our traditional GW Commencement and SEAS Dean, School of Graduation Celebration. Engineering and Applied Science In the meantime, as you look forward to your next challenge, I hope you will recall what you have learned during your time at SEAS. First and foremost, you have studied your discipline in technical depth and acquired an understanding of the ethical practice and societal context of engineering and computer science. You have learned to think creatively about complex topics and to work collaboratively with people across disciplines and from various backgrounds. Your experiences inside and outside the classroom have prepared you to become a valuable member—and leader—of diverse teams solving society’s grand challenges. But the preparation you have acquired here is just the beginning. I challenge you to go forth from today as a life-long learner, constantly collecting new knowledge, skills, and perspectives to better serve humankind in our ever-changing world. The current pandemic—that dynamic and tragic backdrop to our collective lives for over a year— has reminded us of the importance of adaptability and the need to be proactive in preparing for any challenges that may come our way. As engineers and computer scientists, you have special capabilities and responsibilities, and your commitment to continued growth and adaptability will help you make the world a better and more resilient and equitable place for all. Whether you are now going on to your first full-time job, heading to graduate school or professional school, or otherwise continuing on your life path with what you have gained from your time at GW, please stay in touch with us and with your fellow alumni. Remember that the SEAS community extends far beyond campus and will always welcome you. With a worldwide network of alumni and friends, you will find opportunities to connect with, support, and be supported by fellow GW graduates wherever you venture. And individually and together, you will Raise High! I wish you all the best, John Lach Dean, School of Engineering and Applied Science 5 | GRADUATION CELEBRATION 2021
G UE ST S P E AK E R Dr. Christine Mann Darden, a retired NASA director and aerospace engineer, is an internationally recognized authority in the field of sonic-boom minimization. Known as one of NASA’s “human computers” in the 60s and 70s, Dr. Darden’s story features in the 2016 bestseller, Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race. Dr. Darden began her career as a high school mathematics teacher but quickly moved to a data analyst position at NASA’s Langley Research Center when the opportunity presented itself. She continued her work as a data analyst for six years, and in 1973, she requested a transfer to the engineering department so she could work on applied mathematics problems, rather than the data work she had been doing. She persisted; her request was granted; and she was promoted to aerospace engineer. She began her work in sonic boom minimization, and in 1989 was named technical leader of the Sonic Boom Group in the High Speed Research Program’s Vehicle Integration Branch. This is Christine Mann Darden, the program responsible for developing NASA’s sonic boom research program. D.Sc. ‘83 In 1999, Dr. Darden became a member of the Senior Executive Service at NASA when she was named director of the Aerospace Performing Center Program Management Office. She subsequently served as NASA Langley’s assistant director for strategic planning and, finally, as the director of strategic communications and education before retiring in 2007. Among the awards she earned throughout her career are: NASA’s Certificate of Outstanding Performance (which she received ten times); the 1988 Black Engineer of the Year Award from U.S. Black Engineer & Technology magazine; and the 1987 Candace Award for Science and Technology. She also was honored in 2002 in a museum exhibition at the San Francisco Airport that showcased seven inventors whose innovations have contributed significantly to the NASA space program. Dr. Darden received her Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics education from Hampton University, followed by her Master of Science degree in applied mathematics from Virginia State College. In 1983, she earned her Doctor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from GW and subsequently was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science from GW in 2019. 6 | GRADUATION CELEBRATION 2021
