Family Stories... “Richard received the most compassionate physical, emotional and spiritual end of life care imaginable with comfort, dignity and respect.” We could not allow our experience with the care received go without sharing our gratitude to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties and our care team. Each person brought into our home a professional attitude, loads of practical ideas to help with Richard, and most important...a bedside manner that made Richard feel important and cared for. Richard started Hospice care at home in January until his passing on March 4, 2020. During those months, we had the privilege of working with the most extraordinary group of professionals whose jobs were endless and always done with kindness and compassion. Not only was Richard cared for, but so were his four caregivers. Thank you, Janine, Jennifer, Tiffany, Vanessa, Darlene, Kristen and Leda for being the angel’s we families so desperately need in our most difficult times. Jerry Fritz, Jennifer Peterson, Holly Dickerson and Terry Sandford Richard Dickerson “I could not have asked for a better place for my brother to live his last weeks of life.” I must first thank all the wonder “Angels on Earth” who came to my home when my brother Doug first came on Hospice care. I really wanted to keep him home with me and in the beginning, Hospice allowed me to do just that, and I will always be grateful. As he started to decline, I realized it would be better for him to go to the residence, so with the help of his Hospice care team, he was moved to the comforts of the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence. I could not have asked for a better place for my brother to live his last weeks of life. The “Angels on Earth” at the residence went above and beyond and gave him the dignity I wanted him to have. I also want to thank the chefs, who knowing Doug could not swallow, also went above and beyond to fix meals he could eat. I will never forget all these wonderful people who helped me, my family and our brother through a difficult time. What a beautiful peaceful place. God bless all of you. Teresa Lyons Doug DiCola 4

Friends of Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties Due to our current situation, the Friends of Hospice Annual Spring Luncheon had to be canceled just as invitations were ready for mailing. Thank you, Greer Cooper, Barbara Naru and Colleen Fogarty, for planning the event, which was sure to be a success. Friends of Hospice of Orange and Sullivan send their love and concern to all families and hope to participate in events when it is prudent to do so. Please consider supporting our ongoing White Sale providing hospital bed sheets and mattress pads for patients in need who are receiving care in their homes. Watch for Annual Mum Sale September 2020. For more information please go to https://hospiceoforange.com/friends-of-hospice/ Hospice care normalizes family relationships and provides opportunities to make lasting memories. Whether at home, in a nursing home, a group home or our own Kaplan Family Hospice Residence, having hospice care takes the burden of responsibility off the primary caregiver and family, allowing families to engage and share more quality time together. Hospice allows patients to receive the care that is needed in a comfortable, familiar setting, while surrounded by family, friends, and pets. Without having to be separated from the people, foods, belongings, and routines associated with home along with some favorite shared activities. When 24-hour Hospice care is needed, we provide a home. The Kaplan Family Hospice Residence has “family” in the name. Family, friends and pets are always welcome, traditions can continue, and shared interests can be pursued. Offering the possibility for patients to retain a home setting defines the Hospice mission. We understand the decision to seek hospice care comes with many questions. Our teams educate patients and families on all services and care, helping answer questions and allowing for peaceful discussions and decision making. We are just a phone call away. 845-561-6111 6
