Why do you give to Blue Hill Spring 2013 Memorial Hospital? “Linda and I hope everyone will support our hospital, which like Blue Hill’s small mountain and its lovely bay, shines like a jewel on the coast of Maine.” - Bob and Linda Slaven “BHMH saved my life. I am returning the favor.” ...Continued on page 3 - Sara Leighton Sara and Richard Leighton “Blue Hill Memorial Hospital is here Bob and Linda Slaven for everyone in the community. Healthcare affects everyone at some time in their life. By giving to the hospital, I feel like I can make a small difference in the quality of life for the peninsula community. As an employee, it’s easy to donate with payroll deduction.” - Sandy Smallidge, RN “BHMH has been there for us.” ...Continued on page 7 Sandy Smallidge Mikey and John Bannister - Mikey and John Bannister “Peace of mind. That is what we have knowing that BHMH and quality healthcare are nearby. It is priceless.” - John and Barbara Jacobs John and Barbara Jacobs
We are delighted to present you with our spring edition of House Call, which is devoted to our patients and donors. In this issue, we want to share some exciting news about the direction of Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, as well as the important role philanthropy has played in the hospital’s success and its continued importance as we move forward. In our last issue of House Call, we discussed how, as a member of EMHS, we are helping to pave the way in developing new models of patient care that will better position us for the major transformation in healthcare that is currently underway. To summarize, the new model aims to improve quality of care while keeping people healthier and out of hospital inpatient Frank Wanning and Greg Roraff beds. Recently, the Board of Trustees approved a new strategic plan that will guide Blue Hill Memorial Hospital into the future. The strategic plan helps prepare Blue Hill to be a national model of excellence in rural healthcare delivery by 2020. While more details of the plan will be forthcoming, our main focus is to enhance much needed primary and selected specialty services for our patients. This enhancement will be accomplished through improved access to primary care and an increase in related services such as behavioral health, specialty consultations, and telemedicine through our relationship with Eastern Maine Medical Center. BHMH’s primary care clinics deliver patient centered care that focuses on a team approach to providing high quality, comprehensive primary care. The strength in this model is that it facilitates partnerships between patients, providers, and other members of the care team, helping patients more easily navigate their path to better health. We look forward to sharing more about this new model of care in the coming months! While this “patient-centered” model of care is already in place in our primary care clinics, we know the clinic’s physical space is not conducive for this new era of health delivery. A large piece of the strategic plan includes a master facilities plan, which will better position us to deliver the best in patient services as we move toward our 2020 vision, including a new strategically designed space for primary care. The goal is to ensure that each patient get the right care, at the right time, and in the right place, and the proposed physical changes to Blue Hill Memorial Hospital will ensure that goal is met. Once the campus plan receives final approval, our care teams will occupy much of a new addition that will be connected to the hospital. This will centralize our primary and specialty care clinicians, rehabilitation and physical therapy programs, behavioral health professionals, and infusion/ oncology services so that we can better provide the healthcare services crucially needed by our community. The philanthropic support from our friends and neighbors will play a necessary role in the fulfillment of our master facility plan. We look forward to partnering with the community as we move forward with this ambitious strategic plan to continue providing high quality, compassionate care in an ever changing healthcare environment. To that end, we plan to begin a capital campaign feasibility study in early June, which will run through the end of August. The results of this study will help determine the goal for this fundraising effort. Thank you for your continued support. Frank Wanning Board Chair Greg Roraff, FACHE President and CEO 2
Donor Profile: Sara Sara’s Since 2008, Blue Hill Memorial Hospital has hosted an annual Fun Run. Last year, more than 180 participants ran for their health and to raise money for the hospital’s wellness programs. Originally, Sara thought of the run as a way to promote her business and build community pride and spirit at Thank You! the same time, but the run became much more. “By encouraging employees, friends, and customers to get in shape and engage in On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the employees of Blue healthy activity, we raised awareness and funds to help support Hill Memorial Hospital, we want to say a heart-felt THANK community efforts and that’s a win – win for all!” Sara exclaims. She is pleased to be able to show her “appreciation for the contribution the hospital has made to the Blue Hill Peninsula.” Like John, Mikey has been very comforted in knowing there are such wonderful and caring professionals at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. The Financial Year in Review Over the last 12 months, Blue Hill Memorial Hospital has continued to solidify its financial position. The period covered by the accompanying graphs includes the first quarter of our current fiscal year. As you will see, some year-over-year trends are starting to emerge. Clinic operations are becoming more efficient. More people are using our primary care practices, a result of extra time and hard work by medical staff and support personnel. Starting in 2013, the primary care clinics also added evening and early morning appointments. BHMH’s membership in EMHS continues to bring value. The general and professional liability insurance program operated by EMHS has decreased BHMH’s costs by 35 percent and new communication technology has helped lower travel costs by 25 percent. The state of the economy affects the hospital as much as it affects everyone else. The cost of providing uncompensated care has increased by 15 percent. State taxes, which were raised to help close the State’s budget gap last year, are up 17 percent. While it may seem difficult to describe any financial future as bright, Blue Hill Memorial Hospital continues to work on the fundamentals and competencies necessary to excel in this era of healthcare reform. 7
