OWHS Dance Team Tryout Information 2020-2021 Thank you for your interest in being a member of the Olathe West Dance Team! Tryouts will be held July 7th-9th. Both dance team applicants and parents/guardians should read the content of this packet carefully. It is an honor and a privilege to be selected as a member of the dance team. There are many who would like to be selected and who would be willing to put for the time and effort necessary. Please fully consider all expectations and requirements before deciding to tryout. Responsibility to the squad and its members will be of the highest priority. Olathe West Dance Team Tryout Information When: July 7th-9th Where: Olathe West High School (Event Entrance) 2200 Santa Fe Street Olathe, KS 66061 Clinic Times: Tuesday, July 7th: 1-3pm Wednesday, July 8th: 1-3pm Thursday, July 9th: Tryouts 4pm Friday, July 10th: Junior Varsity and Varsity Teams will be announced via team website: www.owhsdance.weebly.com How to apply: 1. All dance team applicants must reside in the Olathe West Attendance Area or already have been approved to transfer. 2. Fill out the Tryout Application and General Information Form, submit grades/GPA, and sign the Dance Team Contract via Google Forms. 3. These should by returned by Sunday, July 5th. 4. You must have a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (weighted or non-weighted), have passed five classes in the fall of 2019. a. Incoming Freshman: Your 8th grade 1st semester and 3rd quarter grade points will be evaluation. b. Sophomores and Juniors: Your cumulative GPA will be evaluated c. A copy of your First Semester grades are due with your application. i. How to obtain first semester grade care from StudentVue: 1. Log into StudentVue: 2. Click Report Card in the left blue menu column. 3. Click QT2 in the upper right corner. 4. Under student picture on the left side, click click her to view report card for Quarter 2. 5. Print and attach forms.
Tryout Information: All individuals auditioning for Junior Varsity or Varsity will be required to perform: 1. Jazz routine 2. Pom Sideline 3. Vocals/Spiriting/Transitions 4. Turns: a. Junior Varsity: double/working triple pirouette b. Varsity: triple/working quad pirouette c. All: Second Turns (four into a double pirouette) 5. Two 8 counts of technique of choice 6. Other various technical elements (toe touch, battements, high kicks, splits, etc may be included in tryout transitions). Candidates will audition in groups of two or three. These groups will be a mixture of all grades. Members will be selected by: 60% tryout points and 40% clinic points. The final team size is not pre-determined (for both Junior Varsity and Varsity). Clinic Observation: Rubric Attaches. Subject to change at coaches’ discretion. The judges will consist of college dance team members, professional sports team dancers, dance instructors/coaches, choreographers, etc. all having a background in dance. All tryout judges are independent and not associated with Olathe West or the Olathe West Dance Team. Clinic and tryouts are closed to viewing by parents and friends. There will be no video recording allowed. Clinic Attire: please wear a tight fitting top (tank, leotard, or dance top) that does not display school/studio emblems or names. Wear leggings/workout tights or hot shorts on bottom. You must wear shoes at all times. Gum or jewelry is not allowed during clinics or tryouts. Tryout Attire: Same requirements as above, but please wear all black. Hair and Makeup: Your hair should be pulled back neatly for all clinics and tryouts. No loose hair/flyaways. For clinics your makeup should be more pronounced than your daily makeup. For tryouts you should do full performance makeup. Judging for tryouts will consist of: 1. Showmanship 2. Appearance 3. Overall impression Once again, being selected as a member of the dance team is an honor and privilege that not all individuals will experience. There are many who would like to be selected, who are willing to give the time and effort necessary. Please highly consider all of these requirements prior to making the decision to try out.

There are some distinctions between Junior Varsity and Varsity. Here are some general distinctions between the two teams. Dance Team Tryout Application Questionnaire This form will be submitted via Google Forms (Step 2). There are no right or wrong answers to these questions, but please answer completely. Respond on a separate piece of paper and fill at least one page. Please type your responses. 1. List all school activities/sports you are involved in. 2. List all activities outside of school you are involved in (church, community, etc). 3. How do you balance all of your activities? 4. What is your dance experience? Do you train at a studio? If so, which one? 5. What do you have to offer to the OW Dance Team? Provide examples. 6. Besides the requirements defined on this tryout form, what do you think are your responsibilities to your fellow team members, coaches, and yourself? Please be specific. 7. Describe your personality. What are your three biggest strengths (not dance related)? Support your response. 8. What are three things you could improve on (not dance related)? How will you meet these goals? 9. How will you uphold the academic standards of the OW Dance Team? 10. How will you uphold the discipline and values of the OW Dance Team? 11. As a member of the Dance Team, you will be asked not to engage in any of the following: drinking, smoking, drugs, and inappropriate behavior with boys. These are not only the rules of the team, but also a KSHSAA rule, as well as an Olathe West rule. How will you uphold these values? 12. Why do you want to be a member of the OW Dance Team? OWHS Dance Team Tryout Contract Form This form will be submitted via Google Forms (Final Step). Parents and OW Dance team candidate: Please read the following carefully. It is imperative that both parent and student understand the commitment, time, rules and expense that are required to be a successful and contributing member of this team. I understand that: Dance team is a one year (12 month) commitment and is a tremendous amount of time. If selected as a member of the OW Dance Team, I understand that attendance at ALL practices and performances is mandatory. I will schedule work, appointments, and any other activities around practice and performance times. I will make these sacrifices without complaint because I am part of a team, and my actions and choices will impact my entire team. Dance Team is a financial commitment that costs approximately $900 for a new member and if selected, I will uphold my financial responsibilities to the team through fundraising and payments. I must attend all clinics and tryout sessions to be considered for a position on the squad. Qualified judges will evaluate my tryout performance. If selected, I will be required to attend summer practices/choreography July 13, 14, 15, 16. If selected, I will be required to attend band camp- beginning the last week in July. If selected, I will abide by all the rules and regulations set forth by the coaches, dance team constitution, and administrators at Olathe West High School and be present for all practices, games, or other events (camp, fundraisers, etc). If selected, I understand the high standards of the Olathe West Dance Team. I commit to representing myself, my school, and my team in a manner which is beyond reproach, at all times. No drinking, smoking, or use of illegal substances, inappropriate displays of affection, or profanity in or out of uniform will be tolerated. If selected, I will NOT put myself in questionable situations. Any social media (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc) should be school appropriate. Any infractions will be assigned consequences according to the dance team constitution, the Student Code of Conduct, and/or the District Substance Abuse Policy. My academics are priority. If selected, I will be expected to strive for my best in the classroom. I commit to maintaining my grades (C or above in all classes at all times) and attending school regularly. If selected, dance team is a class, which meets at 7:00 am during the school year and my grade will be determined by my ability to follow OWHS dance team expectations. By the very nature of this activity, there is a risk of physical injury and I will not hold OW High School or any of its personnel responsible in the case of accident or injury at any time. A spot on the team does not guarantee a performance in every routine. There will be tryouts for most routines throughout the year. If selected, I promise to abide by all aforementioned rules/regulations and to cooperate with and follow instructions given by the dance team coach, and fulfill my duties as a member throughout the school year. I understand that if I am selected to be a member of the 2020-2021 dance team, a $200 payment will be due at the post tryout informational meeting (selected members will receive more information via email, so please provide up to date email addresses on the Tryout Application Form). I understand that all expenses must be paid in full by December 2020 (unless other payment arrangements have been made and honored with the coach and an administrator approval. If selected, I will fulfill all duties as a member of the Olathe West Dance Team for the 2020-2021 school year. Applicants must have all complete forms submitted in order to be eligible for auditions. This contract is included in the tryout packet as an example so candidates understand dance team expectations should they be selected to be a member of the team. Olathe West High School Dance Team Constitution **SAMPLE COPY** Dance Team members at Olathe West will lead the student body by demonstrating school spirit and good sportsmanship at athletic events, encouraging attendance at school events, developing leadership qualities and skills, and representing Olathe West High School with both pride and excellence. This Dance Team Constitution is used as a guide for dance team members and coaches. Communication: 1. A calendar of events will be handed out prior to the start of the season. 2. Parents and dancers will be notified via email monthly calendar/schedule updates for both practices and performances. 3. Any change of uniform, location, etc. communication will come from a coach only. 4. In the event there is question about any information regarding dance (ie time, location, uniform, etc.), dancer and/or parent should take the following actions before communication with coaches: a. Ask other teammates. b. Ask squad leader. c. Email coach. General Rules and Expectations: 1. Each dancer will be an active, thriving member of the team. This is of utmost importance and will continually be evaluated. It is each dancer’s responsibility to represent Olathe West in a positive manner. 2. No phones during class/practice. 3. Coaches reserve the right to make decisions that are in the best interest of the team to ensure safe and successful performances. Dancers and parents will respect the decision made by coaches. 4. All practices are closed to the public. No interruptions will be made during first hour practices and/or early morning/after school practices by parents, guardians, siblings, etc. unless prior communication has been made or an absolute emergency takes place (ie a death in the family or hospitalization). 5. Any leadership position will be selected by a voting process, an interview with coaches, short answer response, ability to lead practice, and coaches’ discretion.
6. Concerns with social media outlets (Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, VSCO, any spam or “fake” accounts) will be addressed. All dancers will follow our team page and will allow team page to follow any/all accounts. As a representative of the OWHS Dance Team, any media that appears to question one’s character also puts in to question the character of the squad. Depending on the severity, coaches and/or administration reserve the right to take disciplinary measures. Expectations of Attendance: 1. Dancers will attend all games, events, practices, fundraisers, class, camp and competition as listed on the calendar. This includes substantial time commitment outside of the regular school day. 2. Absences: Coaches will determine excused and unexcused absences. a. Excused absences include, but are not limited to the following: sickness, a funeral, religious observance, family emergency, school-related activities directly related to or sponsored by Olathe West, or pre-approved once-in-a-lifetime opportunities (ie 50th wedding anniversaries, 100th birthday party, etc). Any absence must be discussed with a coach at least one week prior to the absence and must be submitted in writing. b. Unexcused absences include, but are not limited to the following: work, forgetting, family vacation, outside club activities not related to OWHS, not having a ride, etc. i. First Unexcused Absence: Warning/deduction of points ii. Second Unexcused Absence: Deduction of points and benching for next two events iii. Third Unexcused Absence: Deduction of points and meeting with both parent and dancer to discuss status. 3. A yearlong commitment has been made to dance team. This commitment may make it very difficult to have enough time for a job. Work does not qualify as an excused absence. 4. A yearlong commitment has been made to dance team. A maximum of 6 event absences (excused and/or unexcused excluding 1st hour class) will be allowed through the dance season (with the exception of extreme illness or at the coaches’ discretion). Dancers electing to miss more than 6 total events outside of 1st hour class will forego membership of the team for the remainder of the year. 6. In the event a dancer is sick Coach Plankers must be notified prior to the event via email. 7. If a dancer is absent from 1st hour practice, communication with the head coach must be made via email immediately. “Word of Mouth” is not an acceptable form of communicating an absence. 8. It is expected to be present 4 hours out of the 7 hour school day in order to participate in that evenings events. 9. Dancers have the opportunity to participate in other school-sponsored sport/activity. It is strongly advised to consider the time commitment that both dance and the sport/activity will require (ex. Volleyball, basketball, track). a. Committing to another school-sponsored sport/activity may result in the dancer not being able to compete/participate in all performance pieces and/or opportunities. 10. If dancers are involved in sports/activities outside of school (ie competitive dance teams, club soccer, etc) coaches must be notified of schedules as soon as possible. The commitment to OWHS dance should come first. a. Committing to another school-sponsored sport/activity may result in the dancer not being able to compete/participate in all performance pieces and/or opportunities. Eligibility: 1. Dancers must maintain a 2.5 GPA for the entire school year.
2. Grades will be checked at each midterm, quarter, semester, and other times as deemed needed. 3. Dancers must be passing all classes throughout the school year in order to participate in dance. 4. An Olathe District Schools Substance Abuse Policy form, Transportation Guidelines and Parent Signature form, KSHSAA Concussions & Head Injury form, and Physical (all dated after May 1st, 2019) must be on file for each dancer in the main office at OWHS. Dance Team Grade/Points: 1. Dance team is a graded class. To earn points you must be present, prepared, and actively participating with a positive attitude. 2. Each regular class period day is worth 10 points and block days are 15 points. Points will be deducted if the following expectations are not met: proper practice uniform and shoes, hair pulled back, no jewelry, in assigned spot on time, good attitude, and proper work ethic. 3. Performances and events are worth 25 points. 4. Just as when a student misses a class or event for another academic course, dancers will need to make up the points they miss when absent. This can be done in various ways. Please see Make-Up Points form. When the form is completed the form needs to be turned in to Coach Plankers. 5. If a dancer is benched, she is expected to still come to the event/performance in uniform. She will have to make up points for being benched for scheduled event/performance. Uniforms: 1. When in uniform, dancers are to wear school-issued items only. 2. Dancers are expected to have all required items at each event (ie poms, outerwear, warmups, correct hair/makeup, etc). If the dancer is missing an item, she will be benched from the event and receive no points. She will be required to sit with the supervising coach (no cell phones will be allowed if benched). She will be required to make-up points. 3. Jewelry will not be allowing during practices or performances. Piecing that can’t be removed should not be done during the dance season. Piercing are not allowed in order to participate, as ruled by KSHSAA. 4. School uniforms, warmups, and costumes will be provided. This must be taken care of and returned in original condition. Cost to replace or correct will be applied. Financial Obligations: 1. The intent is that all individual dance balances be paid in full prior to band camp. 2. In the even that payment cannot be met on time, written communication with Coach Plankers is required to establish a new plan. However, all account balances must be paid in full prior to tryouts the following year to be eligible to tryout. 3. If the dancer is dismissed for disciplinary reasons or decides to leave the team at any point during the dance season (even before camp), she is financially responsible for any and all outstanding balances and will not be refunded for any amount that has been paid. Additionally, dancer will not be eligible to try out for the team the following year. Transportation: 1. Transportation to all out-of-district activities will be provided by the school.
2. All dancers will ride school transportation (bus and/or school suburban) to and from performances/events. 3. Only parents or legal guardians can take a cheerleader from a performance/even after notifying and signing off with coach on duty. 4. Transportation to all home and in-district performances/events is the responsibility of the individual unless otherwise stated. Injury: 1. If injury or illness occurs and prevents participation, the member must have a written doctor’s/trainers statement to be excused from dance team activities and/or to be allowed to participate again following an injury. a. If the dancer does not have a doctor’s note, she will have to make up the points she missed for the practice/performance/event. 2. If a dancer is injured, she is expected to attend all practices, games and events and sit with the coach in uniform (unless a doctor’s note states otherwise). a. A doctor’s/trainers statement will be required to clear a dancer injury. 3. Dancers who are not seriously injured will be expected to dress out and practice as much as they are physically able. Discipline: 1. Dancers will follow all disciple rules of the team at all times. 2. Dancers will always uphold the rules and reputation of the organization as well as the school handbook and the Olathe District Schools Substance Abuse Policy. Please refer to the non- athletic, co-curricular, or extra-curricular activities on the Substance Abuse Policy (second bullet under each offense). 3. In addition to the Substance Abuse Policy, dancers are expected to leave an unlawful situation (ie underage drinking party) immediately. 4. Dancers are to NEVER engage in any of the following: drinking, smoking, drugs, and inappropriate behavior with boys. These are not only rules of the team and Olathe West, but also KSHSAA policies. Dancers will follow the rules as set up by KSHSAA and Olathe West. 5. Dancers will not post anything to a social media site (including but not limited to Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, VSCO, etc) that is deemed inappropriate or demeaning to the organization, to any other individual, or personally inappropriate according to the rules of the organization. Coach and/or Administrator will determine action based upon the offense. a. If asked to take something off social media, dancer will do so immediately. If this expectation is not met, dancer will be benched for a minimum of two events. 6. If a dancer is dismissed for disciplinary reasons or decides to leave the team, she is financially responsible for any and all items she has ordered as well as all school property that has been checked out to her. 7. Removal from the team requires a conference with coaches, the dancer, the dancer’s parent/guardian, and the spirit activities director. 8. A benched dancer will be in uniform and will sit with coach(es) on duty. a. No cell phones are allowed while benched. b. With each benching, an increased number of games benched will be applied. 9. Discipline for the year will affect the following year tryout evaluations. 10. Dancers who quit after making the team or are removed from the squad will not be allowed the opportunity to tryout the following year. DANCE TEAM GRADE BREAKDOWN Expectations of Attendance:

A “Make-Up Points” form must be filled out and submitted one week before the end of the quarter in which the absence occurred. This includes not being ready on time. 25 points per game Evaluated on the following: Correct uniform (warmups, shoes, costume, hair, makeup, lashes, poms, proper undergarments, etc). General spirit, enthusiasm, and behavior (paying attention to the game/crowd, following directions, general demeanor). Performance (prepared to dance, crowd involvement in the stands, etc).
