Introduction Welcome to the 2021 Summer Baseball Season! The DGF Baseball Club welcomes all new and returning players and families to the 2021 Summer Baseball Season. As always, we look forward to another enjoyable and successful summer of baseball. The tradition of great baseball in the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton communities goes back many years and we are honored to keep this tradition alive and well. The DGF Baseball Club organization is committed to providing quality programs for our area youth. The DGF Baseball Club will be sponsoring both American Legion and Babe Ruth Baseball programs for all interested youth in the DGF communities. We are committed to offering participation opportunities for all who wish to play baseball in the summer. This DGF Baseball Club “Program Handbook” will help communicate the details of our sponsored programs to our players and their families. This Program Handbook is an annual publication that serves as a set of guidelines for our programs. The handbook is reviewed, modified, and adopted before each season by the DGF Baseball Club officers. We hope you find it helpful. DGF Baseball Club Organization The DGF Baseball Club is a governing entity of youth baseball which includes American Legion Baseball and Babe Ruth Baseball programs serving the communities of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, Minnesota. The DGF Baseball Club is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The organization has adopted by-laws which govern the club and meetings. The DGF Baseball Club meets several times each year in public or private session to do business. You can find information regarding scheduled public meetings on the Club website. Mission & Core Values MISSION STATEMENT Our mission is to develop passionate and skilled baseball players to compete at a high level while learning the concepts of team, fair play, and sportsmanship. Our program will use baseball as a platform to teach our core values and life lessons to young men in a team environment that is positive, challenging and fun. Our program will encourage, demonstrate, and foster a culture of team and unity among players, coaches, parents/guardians, alumni, fans and our Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton communities. Communications It is the goal of the DGF Baseball Club to effectively communicate information to its program participants, so everyone can learn, understand, and engage in the happenings of the program. The DGF Baseball Club will collect (but not share) personal contact information such as email addresses, phone numbers, etc. The DGF Baseball Club will only use your contact information for the purpose of informing you of activities related to our programs and for registration purposes when submitting official team rosters to District and State offices. COMMUNICATING WITH DGF BASEBALL CLUB OFFICERS If you are interested in contacting a member of the DGF Baseball Club board, please contact the board by using the club’s email address listed on the Club website. If you have an idea, would like to offer your support or volunteer please contact us for opportunities of involvement. COMMUNICATING WITH COACHES Players. It is expected players will communicate with their respective coach when needing to be away from required team practices, games, or sponsored events. We want players to learn the responsibility for communicating directly with their coach(es), as responsibility is one of our core values. Parents/Guardians. It is expected parents/guardians will communicate with their son’s coach in a timely, appropriate, and respectful manner. Please be considerate of our coach’s time and their personal schedules away from baseball. Do not contact a coach before or immediately after a game to discuss playing time, discipline, team strategy or any other topic related to the conduct of the team. Under no circumstance should a parent/guardian send an electronic message (texting, emails, etc.) to negatively communicate with a coach. Such electronic communications will immediately be brought to the DGF Baseball Club Board for review and will be subject to a player suspension or dismissal from the program. COMMUNICATION LADDER If an issue or conflict needs to be discussed to gain resolve, the following Communication Ladder will be used to engage the proper people to have constructive discussion and resolution. 1. The Player should ask for a private meeting with his respective Coach(es) to work through the issue and gain an understanding of the matter. This discussion will resolve most issues and bring closure to the concern. 2. The Player and Parent should ask for a meeting with his respective Coach(es) to work through the issue and gain an understanding of the matter. The scheduled meeting will be at a mutually agreed time. 3. The Player, Parent(s), Coach(es) and a Board member(s) will schedule a meeting to work through the unresolved issue and have a discussion to bring closure to the concern. 4. If an issue remains unresolved after Level 3 of the Communication Ladder, a private meeting of DGF Baseball Club board will discuss and determine a final decision to resolve the matter. 2021 PROGRAM HANDBOOK | DGF BASEBALL CLUB 6
Communication Success Model The above Communication Success Model is an illustration of how effective communication can allow an Athlete to achieve success in the DGF Baseball program. The Club values the participation of its athletes, the Coaches who lead them and the Parent/Families that support them. Lines of Communication: Coach and Athlete. The constant communication between coaches and players is where the “rubber meets the road” in any program. Whether it be bus rides, in the dugout, on the practice field or walking out of the ballpark, interaction between coaches and players is of greatest importance and where success is fostered and built upon. Parent and Athlete. The support communicated to players from our parents and family members is of utmost importance to achieve complete success. The ability to give a player encouragement, helping them manage success & failure and supporting their effort/hard work will lead to joy in participation. Coach and Parent. An important key in achieving a successful experience for an athlete is the communication between coaches and parents. A common component that both the coach and parent share when it comes to athlete’s participation is their “well-being.” There should be timely discussion about an athlete’s health and safety to support the player, so they can learn and be successful. 2021 PROGRAM HANDBOOK | DGF BASEBALL CLUB 7
Social Media All players and coaches participating in the DGF Baseball Club program, you are a representative of DGF and are always in the public eye whether you think so or not. Please keep in mind the following guidelines below if you participate on the various Social Media sites. Guidelines The DGF Baseball Club recognizes an individual’s right to actively participate in social media however it maintains and will enforce the following expectations of all players, coaches, and family members. • You will not post sexist, racist, obscene, or profane material of any kind. • You will not use social media to degrade, demean, or attack any person or team, school, or community. • You will not post material relating to acts in violation of any Federal or State laws, DGF Baseball Club policies, or team rules. • You will not post material which reflects negatively on themselves, DGF Baseball, their respective teams, communities, or other teams/schools. Consequence Any player or coach found to have posted negative content using social media or any electronic messaging as noted in the above guidelines will be dismissed immediately from the team for the remainder of the season. Any family members of the team found to be misusing social media per the above guidelines will be dealt with on an individual basis by the DGF Baseball Club Board of Directors. Age Requirements & Eligibility AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL American Legion Baseball competition in 2021 is open only to players born on or after January 1, 2001. Players born in 2003 or 2002, must play in the Senior Legion Program. Players born in 2004-2008 are eligible for the both the Senior and Junior Legion Program. Players born in 2009 are too young and not eligible for Legion baseball. Players born in 2001 are too old and not eligible for Legion baseball. “Super Seniors”: A 2020 High School graduate shall not be eligible for transfer or waivers. 2021 Age Eligibility Chart. BABE RUTH BASEBALL BABE RUTH 13-15 YEAR OLD LEAGUE Any player born prior to May 1, 2008 and on or after May 1, 2005 will be eligible for Babe Ruth 13-15 League competition. All player ages are determined by the birth chart shown below. May 1 in any year shall be the deciding date. 2021 Birth Chart The above chart is courtesy of Babe Ruth League, Inc. Players Rostering Up If the need arises during a particular year to fill roster spots with younger players on an American Legion team or Babe Ruth teams, this may be considered and allowed by the DGF Baseball Club. The evaluation of rosters, player’s abilities, and maturity to “move up” a level will be approved by the DGF Baseball Club Board of Directors. 2021 PROGRAM HANDBOOK | DGF BASEBALL CLUB 10
American Legion Baseball Teams The DGF Baseball Club will sponsor a Sr. American Legion Baseball Team “DGF Post 397” to play in Minnesota Division II Baseball. If registration numbers warrant the addition of a Jr. American Legion Baseball team to allow all boys to participate, an alternative team(s) will be sponsored. A maximum roster for Senior and Junior Legion teams is 18 players. See Legion Age Eligibility Chart for rostering eligibility. Rosters The determination of team rosters will be the decision of the American Legion Baseball staff. These roster decisions are based on a player’s age, skill level, commitment, effort, and attitude. Staff The American Legion Baseball team(s) will consist of the following staff: Team Manager, Head Coach and Assistant Coach(es). Practices American Legion Baseball practices are typically held in the late afternoon or evening. Practice times are scheduled by the team’s coach. Practices are mandatory and player dress/uniform is determined by the team’s coach. Practice facilities at Bob Marshall Field in Dilworth will be used. Games The DGF Post 397 Sr. Team will play in the MN Lakes Conference as well as playing non-league games which will consist of single games and doubleheaders. Post 397 attends 1-2 invitational tournaments during the regular season. Games are typically in the evening. The regular season will be followed by a Sub-State, State and Regional Tournament play pending advancement. The DGF Post 397 Jr. Legion team will play a separate schedule of games determined by the coaches to give our younger players game competition to improve skills for advancement to the Sr. Legion level the next season. The Jr. Legion team will compete against similar aged teams in the area. The Jr. Legion division does have a District and State Tournament for post-season play. Players can be double-rostered meaning they can be placed on the Sr. and Jr. Legion team rosters. See Legion Age Eligibility Chart for rostering eligibility. The DGF American Legion Baseball program will have weekday and weekend practices and games. Rules & Expectations American Legion Baseball is the oldest and best discipline amateur baseball program in the country. The American Legion, an organization comprised of veterans, believes operating a well-disciplined baseball program with emphasis on sportsmanship, team loyalty, and the highest level of sportsmanship and individual leadership. Our coaches will insist on these positive qualities throughout the season. There are several rules all players are required to follow to be considered eligible for Post #397 competition. 2021 PROGRAM HANDBOOK | DGF BASEBALL CLUB 11
Team Rules for DGF Post 397 American Legion Baseball: 1. The purchase, distribution or use of alcohol, tobacco, or any other controlled substance by a player without written consent of a licensed, practicing physician is prohibited. Violation will result in suspension and/or dismissal from team. 2. Throwing and/or abuse of equipment is prohibited. If equipment is thrown/abused and damaged, the player will be expected to reimburse Post # 397 for replacement costs. 3. No earrings or jewelry are allowed at practice or during games. 4. Uniforms should be kept clean, in good repair, and always tucked in; from entrance into stadium until departure from stadium, uniforms will be worn correctly. 5. Hats should always be worn correctly (i.e. straightforward). Rally caps are acceptable and encouraged when appropriate. 6. Players will sprint to and from their positions. 7. No spectators are allowed in the dugout during a game. This includes parents, family members, friends, girlfriends, scouts, etc. (nor is any non-player allowed to visit with you during a game). 8. Players can leave the dugout during a game for the following reasons only: to retrieve a foul ball, go to the bathroom, warm up/stretch/throw, or in a medical or weather-related emergency. Players are expected to perform the necessary function and return to the dugout without incident. Any other request to leave the dugout should be discussed with and approved by a member of the coaching staff. 9. When traveling to and from contests, the team will meet at Bob Marshall Field for departure. All players will ride the team’s determined mode of transportation (carpooling, bus, etc.) with the team to and from all games. If a player wishes to depart after the game with a parent due to the fact, they are not returning to DGF, please clear this with the coaching staff prior to the date of the game. 10. Any player who commits a misdemeanor/felony criminal offense will be suspended indefinitely from the team and faces possible dismissal from the team. 11. Occasionally, the team will travel out of town and stay overnight at a hotel. Every player will room with a parent or legal guardian or by designated rooms assignments from the team coach. Rooms are expected to be kept neat and clean. Any damage performed to a room is the financial responsibility of the player and his guardian. Players involved in such a situation will be sent home and dismissed from the team immediately. Under no circumstance will a female guest be permitted in a player’s hotel room while unchaperoned by an adult, coach or parent. Any player violating this rule will be dismissed. 12. Altercations between team players or opposing players are discouraged and prohibited. While tempers can flare unexpectedly, any fighting will be disciplined by immediate suspension and possible dismissal from the team. 13. All players/guardians are expected to call his team’s coach in the event a practice or game is to be missed. 14. All rostered players must submit a raised seal, certified birth certificate from the county/state recorder of deeds/vital statistics office prior to the first game of the season. Hospital certificates and/or photocopies are not allowed. These records will be returned to each player at the conclusion of the season. 15. For those athletes who compete in more than one sport which requires additional summer camps/training, the following statement applies: Legion baseball is considered priority. Any practice or games missed will be dealt with on an individual basis (Penalty will be from missed game time up to dismissal from team). If a player is selected for a sanctioned High School or American Legion baseball All- 2021 PROGRAM HANDBOOK | DGF BASEBALL CLUB 12
Star game, they will not be benched when they return. No players will be allowed to miss any practices or games during the week(s) of the Legion post season (Sub-State Tournament, State Tournament, or Regional Tournament). If you know there is an unavoidable conflict between a summer camp or training commitment and the Legion post season, please do not register for the team. You will not be rostered. In fairness to all who wish to compete, open tryouts are held annually if needed. No roster position is held for any player, returning or non-returning. 16. Players are always expected to uphold the Legion Code of Sportsmanship. All coaching staff disciplinary decisions are final. 17. No parent, family members, or friends are permitted to heckle, harass, or use derogatory, profane, or vulgar remarks or gestures towards the opposing team, coaches, or umpires. Again, the members of Post # 397 believe in sportsmanship and RESPECT. Any parent, family member, friends or fans that violate this rule will be asked to leave the ballpark immediately. A second violation of the rule will result in banishment from the park and other team functions. 18. All players are required to help carry equipment at practices and at games. 19. All players will help maintain Bob Marshall field (pre and post-game). Players will not leave practice or games until the field is back to pre-game condition. 20. Playing time and team selection is determined solely by the coaching staff, these discussions will be between the coach and the athlete. 21. Please do not use social media/e-mail/text to negatively discuss the program. If there are questions, please ask them directly to the coaching staff. 22. All team members must stand and respectfully honor the flag for the national anthem. No stand, no play. 23. Data privacy rules must be maintained; do not discuss other team members. Battle of Omaha Tournament 2021 The DGF Sr. Legion Team plans to participate in the Battle of Omaha Tournament on June 21-23, 2021. This opportunity will be one of the two individual tournaments the Sr. Legion team will participate in. This trip will be funded separately from the general fundraising program conducted by the DGF Baseball Club. 2021 PROGRAM HANDBOOK | DGF BASEBALL CLUB 13
Babe Ruth Baseball Teams The DGF Baseball Club will sponsor a Babe Ruth program for player’s ages 13-15 years old. The program is open to all players wanting to participate and learn the game of baseball. There is no cutting of players. Player participation is encouraged in our DGF communities. The DGF Baseball club will register our 14-15 Year Old team(s) in the Lake Region League. Our 13 Year Old team(s) will be registered in the Lake Region Ruth League. See the Babe Ruth Age Chart for eligibility. Rostering The determination of team rosters will be the decision of designated DGF Baseball Club Directors. The following factors are considered when placing players on teams: age, skills and attitude. The Baseball Club Directors will receive input and evaluation from the following sources: High School/Jr. High coaching staff, Babe Ruth Coaches, performance in high school games, and a Babe Ruth practice/tryout. After learning as much about all registered player’s skill levels, work ethic, attitude, along with their age, final rosters will be determined by the DGF Baseball Club Directors. A Babe Ruth team may consist of (15) maximum players for regular season and District level play. In 14-15 Year Old Babe Ruth, a team may only roster a maximum of (8) 15 year olds. It is not the intent of the DGF Baseball Club, at the 14-15 Year Old level to form equally skilled teams. In the 13 Year Old level, depending on registration numbers, the players will be divided into separate teams that encourages participation and skill development. Drafting of Players If a DGF Babe Ruth team advances to a State Tournament, DGF will participate in the drafting of (3 maximum players) to participate as pitchers and catchers only. A maximum State Tournament roster is 18 players. It is the philosophy of the DGF Baseball Club to evaluate draftees and make selections to strengthen the DGF team to participate at the State Tournament. The Baseball Club will evaluate all eligible players in the District to make its draftee selection(s). The draftee selection meeting will consist of designated DGF Baseball Club Director(s) and/or Babe Ruth Coordinator and DGF Babe Ruth coach(es). Parents/Guardians Code of Conduct As a parent/guardian of a DGF Baseball Club player, I have read, understood, and agree to the following: I will be a model for good sportsmanship, and I will exemplify the highest moral and ethical character as a role model for our young people. I will remember that the baseball game is for the team, not the adults. I will accept my son’s team designation(s) and will encourage him to give great effort, improve his skills and be a great teammate. I will not post material which reflects negatively on players, DGF Baseball, their respective teams, communities, game officials, or other teams/schools. I will allow coaches to coach their team and do their job. I will support my child’s team, coach(es) and players, and I will show respect for the opposing players, managers, coaches, and spectators and teach my child(ren) to do the same. I will be respectful of all umpires’ decisions. I will gain an understanding and appreciation for my son’s Team Rules as outlined in the DGF Baseball Club “Program Handbook.” I will only make positive comments from the sidelines. I will be a positive role model through my actions to make sure my child(ren) has (have) the best baseball experience possible. Registration Fees American Legion Baseball Registration Fee: $250 (Deadline for registration and fee is March 1, 2021) Late fee is $25. Fundraiser Requirements (see below): Raffle Tickets (non-refundable) 5K Race (For Sr. Legion team players only who are making the trip.) Babe Ruth Baseball Registration Fee: $200 (Deadline for registration and fee is March 1, 2021) Late fee is $25. Fundraiser Requirements (see below): Raffle Tickets Fundraisers The following fundraising activities are conducted by the DGF Baseball Club to fund its baseball programs. These programs are organized by the DGF Baseball Club with players, families, alumni, and enthusiasts helping make them successful. There will be top seller opportunities to earn cash incentives for select raffles below. Raffle Tickets All players in American Legion and Babe Ruth Baseball are required to sell 20 tickets (2 books of 10). The tickets are sold for $10 each with chances to win multiple cash prizes. A $200 non-refundable payment is collected for the raffle tickets when registering. Families with 2+ players participating need to sell a minimum of: 30 tickets (3 books) with a $300 deposit. Tickets need to be sold and turned in by Wednesday, June 30, 2021. The LIVE Drawing for the Raffle will be held on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at 7:00pm. If an individual sells 5 books of 10 tickets (50 tickets) the player earns $100 cash. Coaches It is the goal of the DGF Baseball Club to staff the most qualified individuals to lead our teams. The Baseball Club will determine the number of coaches needed each year based on the level of participation at each age level. The American Legion and Babe Ruth Baseball coaches are paid positions, contracted annually, and held to a Code of Conduct by the DGF Baseball Club. The Club advertises/recruits candidates using references and ads in publications. Screening and interviews take place in the January-April timeframe. All coaches must complete an application, be interviewed, pass a background check, and be offered a contract to coach a team. All coaches must complete concussion training and attend a coaching training/orientation from the DGF Baseball Club before the season begins. Fields & Facilities The DGF Baseball programs use fields and facilities in Dilworth. The baseball facility includes Bob Marshall Field, JV Field Baseball Field, batting cage, bullpens, and some green space for practice drills. The fields are property of the DGF School District. The grounds are mowed and generally maintained by the School District. However, it is the responsibility of our participating teams (coaches and players) to help with facility maintenance to include basic duties such as: dragging and chalking fields for games, pitching mound maintenance, sweeping dugouts, emptying garbage cans, putting field’s tarps on the mound and home plate area, etc. The DGF Baseball program has and will continue to take pride in our baseball fields! The general rule of thumb is the Legion teams will take priority over Babe Ruth teams when scheduling Bob Marshall Field and the JV Baseball Field. With the numbers of teams growing in DGF, we will work hard to coordinate practice and games times to maximize our facility use. 2021 PROGRAM HANDBOOK | DGF BASEBALL CLUB 20
Team & Individual Photos The DGF Baseball Club will schedule a photo shoot for each team to take individual and team photos of our 2021 teams. Families will have an opportunity to order photos. The Club will post individual and team photos on the club website. The Baseball Club will contract the photographer and send all families an order form with the details regarding our photo shoot date & time at Bob Marshall Field. Photograher: Best of Times Photography Post-Season Banquet The DGF Baseball Club will organize a team banquet for both American Legion Baseball and Babe Ruth Baseball players and their families. The end of season banquets is a great way to close our seasons, recognize player and team success, thank our participants, and offer awards to our participants for their achievements.
